Impossible gift from FC - a parasaurolophus costume

Hi

My 3yo is obsessed with parasaurolophus dinosaurs. She's has now said she wants a parasaurolophus costume for Christmas.

I can't find one anywhere, so I thought I'd see if the great hive mind of Mumsnet can help.

She's had a horrendous year, and so I want to do whatever I can to fulfill this request.

When I/Santa was asked for an impossible gift I found someone on Etsy who makes something similar and asked her to adapt her design, which she kindly did.

Maybe you could message dino costume/mask makers and ask them to do the same?

Well there's an adult one lol...can you shrink it :s www.halloweencostumes.co.uk/adult-parasaurolophus-dinosaur-costume.html

The difficulty is that their biggest feature is a crest on their head, so generic dinosaur stuff won't cut it. She also knows a lot about dinosaurs.

My husband is willing to try making one, but it's not going to be ready getting that crest right.

You definitely need the "I am a palaeontoligist" from the album Here Comes Science by They Might Be Giants. Great video, delighted my dinosaur-obsessed children. Celebrating all the geeky tiny palaeontologist people - the YouTube video is great fun.

I'll look into this!

Cool, but also terrifying! It looks really claustrophobic.

It could be altered potentially though.

This is perfect. It would be if it wasn't 100 euros. I'm not sure i can justify this, but realistically if I'm looking into custom costumes etc, that's probably what it would cost anyway.

It's only a little crest, but maybe if I cut the wings of this pterodactyl, I could get away with it.

Sometimes when I have to justify spending more than I’d like I think how much my time is worth per hour that i have to spend searching or cobbling together an alternative!

That looks great if you removed the wings! Would the colour matter to her?

That seems like a good option.

Or do you know anyone crafty with a cricut machine or similar? They might be able to cut something for you that you could you.

It might be an issue - yellow is her sisters colour, so my 3yo trends to refuse to wear it. She might make an exception for a parasaurolophus though.

The alternative is maybe buying 2 costumes, and adapting the tail for one, as the crest. That way, it's a matching material.

I don't think so 🫤

Buy lots of craft foam sheets - big ones. And a small size baseball hat in the right colour.

Cut a crest from craft foam - probably 4 or 5 layers glued together. Stick on the baseball cap (so cap is worn backwards). Add more foam to decorate the rest of the cap.

Add a generic dinosaur onesie and you should be good.

Somuchgoo · 10/12/2022 21:29

Not costume related, but I've just found this.

I'd regret buying her a parasaurolophus that's bigger than her right?

It's 95cm tall

@Somuchgoo you must get her the tyrannosaurus drip book by Julia Donaldson! (As an extra)
