Is 'Wednesday' suitable for a 10 year old

Hi all

My 10 year old wants to watch 'Wednesday' on Netflix. It's age rated '12' but she reckons all her friends watch it.

Any thoughts appreciated!

Mine has started watching it with us. There are a couple of completely unnecessary gory bits and some swearing that in my opinion bring no additional benefit but otherwise it seems ok, maybe one or two jump scares which could scare a 10yo.

FromEden · 10/12/2022 17:54

My about to turn 11 year old loved it and wasnt bothered by the monster or gore at all. It has some mild bad language (shit, asshole etc) if you care about that kind of thing

gourmetperle · 10/12/2022 18:14

Thanks all, she watched the first episode with her (older) sister and didn't seem phased at all. Thanks for your help 😀

I was really hoping to watch this with my 8 and 11 year old boys but the little one was scared off by the piranha scene! Think the older one would like it but the 8-year-old is the rate limiting factor unfortunately

I watch a bit more and there were severed body parts and a snapped neck which i think would have just about finished him off haha

Why not just watch it with the 11 year old?

WeAreBorg · 10/12/2022 18:51

Good point 😂

name78change · 10/12/2022 19:22

My usually very timid 9 year old is enjoying, he asks to sleep with his brother on the nights we've watched it though!

SparkyBlue · 10/12/2022 19:29

My just turned ten year old absolutely loved it.

Ohjustboreoff · 10/12/2022 19:58

Yes my 10 year old has seen it and was ok with the horror and gory scenes. There is a swear in one of the later episodes, shit, I think but it was quickly glossed over and my DD didn't pick up on it.

Itsoktogiveup · 10/12/2022 20:15

It’s a weird show, rating wise. I think the makers got it wrong, it would have been great to keep the violence at ‘Buffy’ level.

The first few episodes I’d be fine but not thrilled about my 10 yr old watching, although there is a scene where a group of people are chained up in a barn which is set on fire and you hear them scream and see flashes of it as they burn to death ☹️ just not nice stuff to put in a child’s head. The last episode had way too much violence and gore, including a scene where Wednesday tortures a friend, and I regretted watching it myself. Won’t be watching a series 2 if there is one.

Iwontbecomeher · 10/12/2022 20:18

DD8 and I watched it. She was urgh about the kissing, not fussed about the monsters.

Hmmmmnotsure · 10/12/2022 20:37

I know someone who let their 4 (nearly 5) year old watch it. I haven't seen it yet but this is totally inappropriate surely?!

My 10 yr old watched it and looked away when the monster appeared! But no way would I let my 5 yr old watch it.

My 9yo DS loves it, nice to find something we can watch together

bookworm14 · 14/01/2023 13:06

Sorry to bump an old thread. My seven-year-old has been asking to watch this and claims lots of people in her class are allowed. Having read this thread and the entry on Common Sense Media, my answer is ‘no way’. I’m not being precious, right - this definitely isn’t suitable for a seven year old?

Orangebadger · 14/01/2023 15:17

@bookworm14 personally I would say not. There may be a lot of children with older siblings who watched it. My 5 yr old did not watch it but knows a lot about it as his 10 yr old sister watched it ( when he was in bed!) but it's all the talk in their school. I imagine some people would think he watched it the way he talks about it, but he didn't!

But some parents may be fine with it. Tbh I doubt many 7 yr olds would be able to follow it even if they weren't scared by the monster!

HelenHywater · 14/01/2023 16:05

Mine watched it with her older (19yo!) sister. She seemed to enjoy it and wasn't fazed by it.

bookworm14 · 14/01/2023 16:06

Thanks Orangebadger. I think we will steer clear!

Phineyj · 14/01/2023 16:08

I have said no based on the age rating. On enquiry, the "everyone" in her class who'd seen it were solely those with older siblings.

Xrays · 14/01/2023 16:10

My 10 year old (nearly 11) loved it. But then he loves stuff that others would consider a bit scary - he’s watched stranger things with me and his Dad and was obsessed with it and wasn’t scared at all whereas other people here seem to be horrified by that and wouldn’t let their young teens watch it! Wednesday is really very mild I think, the monster isn’t scary looking.

Sammysquiz · 14/01/2023 17:00

I thought it got darker as the series went on. I wouldn’t let my 10 year old watch it, there’s plenty of other age-appropriate stuff on Netflix.

Sartre · 14/01/2023 17:02

It’s absolutely fine, my 10 yo DD loves it.

Blankiefan · 14/01/2023 17:22

My 9 year old loved it. She's quite conservative about what she watches. We watched as a family- I wouldn't have let her watch alone. There's some poor language (she hears much worse from me and we have an open dialogue about the choices she has about language). Some romance *which my 9 year old hid behind a cushion for). A few gory bits and the end was a big intense. But happy for her to have watched it.

IWishIWasABaller · 14/01/2023 17:24

My normally sensitive 10 year old watched it and loved it but she is obsessed with the Adams family and Wednesday anyway. She watched with her dad so I can't comment on the contents but I haven't heard about anything unsuitable

BryanAdamsLeftAnkle · 14/01/2023 17:27

8 year old DS loved it.

icanwearwhatiwant · 14/01/2023 17:32

My 10 year old also loved it and he is a child who will have nightmares after scary programmes.
He found some parts a bit gory but not nightmare inducing.
