DS has scarlet fever I think

Took him to the GP thus morning, as he cane home from school yesterday with a temperature. He's had a chesty cough for a week or more but wasn't ill with it.

Dr said likely a virus , but swabbed for strep A given the high numbers. Ds has been OK today, not eaten much, quiet but OK.

Just went to check on him and take him for a wee and he's covered in the rash. It wasn't there at 8pm.

Presumably his swab test will be positive, but I don't know if I need to do something now?

Is there nhs advice online OP??
Best wishes xx

He'll need antibiotics. Both my kids had it when they were young, DD was very very poorly but it took them ages to diagnose and she was very tiny. Antibiotics will work quickly. Ring back first thing and you'll be fine 💐

I would treat him as you would for any other virus tonight so paracetamol if he needs it, watch out for any unusual behaviour or breathing that would indicate a need for urgent treatment. Then call the GP in the morning for antibiotics.

I do want to say I have no medical experience though, that's just what I would do.

MrsSkylerWhite · 06/12/2022 23:53

if it is Strep A he needs antibiotics asap. I’d call 111 and report the rash.

endofthelinefinally · 06/12/2022 23:54

Call 111now. If it is scarlet fever/ strep A he needs ABx asap.

DH would be wrong. This recent outbreak is dangerous.

Nannyamc · 06/12/2022 23:57

It is doing the rounds. Very sore throat with blisters on throat. My gd has had it for about 2 wks..on second antibiotics..hard to shift..highly contagious . Db unwell too..said its laryngitis ..also on antibiotics.

Bemyclementine · 06/12/2022 23:58

I likely to get antibiotics tonight? I'm here on my own with 2 x DC. No family close by and the one I coukd ask has been in hospital all might.

goldfishthecracker · 07/12/2022 00:00

endofthelinefinally · 07/12/2022 00:00

yes: 111 will refer you to your local urgent care centre if necessary, who will prescribe.
Appreciate how difficult it is, alone with 2, but needs must.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 07/12/2022 00:04

Looking at this government advice, most cases are mild and clear up on their own but antibiotics help to reduce the contagious period which helps to stop the spread.

Does your DC seem OK besides the rash that's appeared today?

Call 111 about rash, they will advice you and will prescribe so AB will be ready for you first thing in the morning. Maybe you can ask on FB so someone will collect it for you?

Strep A is not a virus it’s a bacteria so I would call 111.

This is bad advice.
OP, please call 111. It is better to be safe.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 07/12/2022 00:15

I rang 111 at 7pm because it is the only way to be granted emergency ooh GP access. After 90 mins in hold all I was told was he should be seen within 24 hours by a pharmacist. I also suspect SF told told them why I was ringing and what I wanted from them (ooh GP appt). He has temp, sore throat, headache and strawberry tongue. I suspect the rash will be on his body by morning. I'll be ignoring the see the pharmacist advice and seeing the GP for abx tomorrow. Mine are good - will have him seen in the morning. They always do. But I'd have preferred to have him start them tonight. But nothing I can do when 111 refuse to give appt. It isn't an a&e issue... so 🤷‍♀️.

Bemyclementine · 07/12/2022 00:28

Straight through to 111, now waiting a call back. Thanks all.

LadyGAgain · 07/12/2022 00:34

Don't hesitate. I hope your child is ok. You need anti bios ASAP.

Bemyclementine · 07/12/2022 00:43

Thank you . I know the GP will see him first thing. In the meantime I'll await the call back (2 hour timescale). I do feel better having called.
