DS has scarlet fever I think

Took him to the GP thus morning, as he cane home from school yesterday with a temperature. He's had a chesty cough for a week or more but wasn't ill with it.

Dr said likely a virus , but swabbed for strep A given the high numbers. Ds has been OK today, not eaten much, quiet but OK.

Just went to check on him and take him for a wee and he's covered in the rash. It wasn't there at 8pm.

Presumably his swab test will be positive, but I don't know if I need to do something now?

How is he this morning op. Hope you get antibiotics if needed and he's well soon x

We didn't get a call back. He's much the same, he's had a really bad chesty cough fir a couple of weeks (which is the main reason I took him to the gp yesterday) temp was up in the night but he was quite settled. I can call the gp at 8.30, thank you all.

He's fully awake now and is feeling much better. The rash is all over his face and body.

When we had scarlet fever in the house it took a few days to diagnose then some antibiotics, though she wasn't really ill. Is this a different strain, hence the panic to get antibiotics immediately?

Bluelightbaby · 07/12/2022 18:57

Regular paracetamol/ibuprofen
passive cooling
Speak to 111 to get out of hours GP appt to get ABX tonight, better to start asap

When DS had scarlet fever his throat swab came back negative but he had the rash, swollen glands, fever and the next day developed strawberry tongue so it was definitely scarlet fever. I'd never fully trust the throat swab again. The advanced nurse practitioner wanted him to stop taking the antibiotics but the GP agreed we should carry on.

I've had scarlet fever OP, it was unusual at the time (50 years ago) and took a while to get properly diagnosed, no swab then, they waited for the rash. He needs antibiotics. I'm usually in the thinking they are very much over prescribed camp, but this is what they are for.

Bemyclementine · 07/12/2022 19:44

@MoreSleepPleasee he was swabbed yesterday morning and the result still wasn't back at 5.30pm today.

@IhearyouClemFandango have you nit seen the news about children dying of Strep A and the need for parents to be vigilant?

We saw the Gp again today, started antibiotics as a precaution, they think it's a virus, although he has headache, sore throat, raised red rash, temperature amd coated tongue.
