Uniquely British things

I went for a walk earlier and saw one of my favourite things.. a random glove stuck on a railing. Obviously someone had dropped it and a kind stranger has put it somewhere easy to spot. I often see dropped items popped on fences/gateposts like this and it got me wondering.. I wonder if they do that in other countries? I've also noticed how polite drivers are here.. mainly! With that little wave or thumbs up when someone lets you through. I've never seen that driving in the US or Europe. Oh and I love the BBC Christmas ident. It's always so cosy. Are there any other cute/ wholesome things that only generally happen in the UK?

Children not being properly (warmly) dresses up in the middle of winter. I regularly see wee schoolboys going to school in shorts instead of long trousers in January. Not sports shorts but part of their uniform. Dreadful.

littlematchstickgirl · 07/12/2022 22:32

@DigitalTranny - all my sons refused point blank to wear trousers to school! They always wore shorts, even in the snow. I'd have been freezing but they were happy. It wasn't neglect on my part

Furries · 08/12/2022 04:21

OP - could you have phrased the title better? Yes.

But there was nothing wrong with your observation of funny quirks we all see day-to-day.

What I loved about this thread was reading those little quirks. I pretty much couldn’t GAF where they came from - lots of them made me smile.

Life is busy, times are hard (to varying degrees) and social media can be cruel.

I hope all of the gloves mentioned on here find their homes.

magicthree · 08/12/2022 05:12

Sorry @DigitalTranny - but that's not uniquely British either. Primary children where I live can wear trackpants, but most of them wear shorts so I'm guessing it's by preference.

Or bonfire night and burning tar barrels? Waiting for ‘that’s an Irish thing as well’

Em..we do Bonfire night too, different date though, it's not an "Irish thing" but definitely not uniquely British

You celebrate the foiled plot of Guy Fawkes?

ChristmasA123 · 08/12/2022 08:44

Lovely post @Furries

@ofwarren She didn’t say she celebrated guy Fawkes night!! Are you completely oblivious to other countries celebrations?

This thread is fucking typical of the small mindedness of huge swathes of the UK population!

Deathraystare · 08/12/2022 09:31

I hadn't notice proper bus queuing and now I am reaching pensioner age I reserve the right to push in (and do!) but today for the first time I saw a proper bus queue for the 31 to Camden and was quite surprised. No one was sitting on the seats at the bus stop which made me wonder if they were wet (they weren't). It just surprised me to see a proper queue for once.

ChristmasA123 · 08/12/2022 09:34

Ah @Youwillyouwill you're back! How lovely to see you again! This must be the 20th time you've commented on this thread and now you're swearing. You sound like you're going to have a heart attack dear. Why don't you make yourself a nice cup of tea? We Brits love our tea Brew

Agree with Furries and op let it go, have a break from going postal on threads that irk.

I was enjoying it without the endless snipes.

Small mindedness?
Why are you such a knob?
What the British call Bonfire Night is not just a night with a bonfire.
Thats like saying the USA have Whit Walks because they have Macys Day Parade.
You are deliberately being a dick.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahah @Youwillyouwill - the poster that just keeps giving
Bloody brilliant in a sad way, which makes me laugh even harder
What else have you got ?

I'll also add to the post the amount of times we can say thank you in a short transition. I counted 7 once

@ChristmasA123 Hello there!! I’m packing for a holiday tomorrow and entertaining myself, and you are so triggered!!

You obviously started the thread to tell us all how wonderful and quirky brits are and now you’re feeling a bit deflated because numerous posts have told a different story! 😀
Also you and your mates on the thread are desperately trying to stop some of us posting!

I’m not a tea drinker by the way, murky stuff,/ but I do love a strong Colombian coffee!!

Don’t worry, I have an early flight in the morning, and lots of shit to do today, including some work sadly, so I’ll sign off now and leave you and your three or four other poster friends to continue your back slapping and mutual appreciation society!!

ChristmasA123 · 08/12/2022 09:56

Ah lovely! Have a fabulous holiday!! I'm going to really miss you on this post. My and my 3 buddies ( I think there were a few more but ok) will get along ok without you I guess. Honestly I'm not deflated at all . It's a gorgeous day here and I'm finishing my last bit of work before a months Christmas break. Toodles!

Omg yes!
My sons old school teacher was the worst for this. So funny 😁

SinnerBoy · 08/12/2022 10:14

I do agree about apologising for things which aren't your fault.

Many moons ago, I was mountain biking along a steep valley and hit a patch where the rain had turned the path into sludge. I slipped and slid over 100m, directly towards a woman with two chocolate Labradors.

I shouted "Look out!" She turned and looked, but was transfixed. I shouted, "Move! Move!" just before I crashed into her. She said, "Oh, sorry!"

I helped her up, fortunately neither us, nor the dogs were hurt and she apologised again!

ArrrrrghStopLickingTheDog · 08/12/2022 10:24

Ooh @Youwillyouwill you bloody weirdo , how can you not love tea ? What in God's name are you doing to it ? Colombian coffee my arse 😴 you really need to educate yourself , talking of which , I give you top public schools
I know @ofwarren it's so funny 🤣

Igglepiggleslittletoe · 08/12/2022 10:32

@Youwillyouwill also not a tea drinker. Currently sipping my 3rd coffee of the day and also heading off on a work jolly today. Have a good one!

Emoji as inspired by thread grumps

SinnerBoy · 08/12/2022 10:43

I've just had my second cup of coffee. I'll probably have a couple of cups of tea, later. I have no strong opinions on people who eschew one, or the other.

Sorry!

Youwillyouwill · 08/12/2022 10:48

@Igglepiggleslittletoe Thanks. Good start to the weekend for us both. Enjoy!
