Uniquely British things

I went for a walk earlier and saw one of my favourite things.. a random glove stuck on a railing. Obviously someone had dropped it and a kind stranger has put it somewhere easy to spot. I often see dropped items popped on fences/gateposts like this and it got me wondering.. I wonder if they do that in other countries? I've also noticed how polite drivers are here.. mainly! With that little wave or thumbs up when someone lets you through. I've never seen that driving in the US or Europe. Oh and I love the BBC Christmas ident. It's always so cosy. Are there any other cute/ wholesome things that only generally happen in the UK?

Very much ‘at least we’re not dead’ a lot of the time 😆

Our queuing is second to none

I can tell that you've never been to Russia, Ukraine, or Kazakhstan!

They queue for sport and if you look like you're going to push in, you'll be put right in your place! Actually push and you'll get lynched by old ladies.

Mind you, in Kazakhstan, if you're in a bus / tram queue and an old, or infirm person, or a mother with small kids arrives, they get ushered on first.

There is a lot of variety within Britain, and I feel that things that are more unique are very local to an area, rather than GB overall. For example, I live in Northern Ireland and there are a few things that I'd consider somewhat special (I hesitate to use unique) about the area. On the plus side most people are genuinely extra friendly and helpful with strangers and visitors, it's very noticeable in the service industries. There is a level of support I've had from neighbours way beyond anything I've experienced in other places I've lived. There is also a strange hybrid of sectarianism and rascism in play, that I find uncomfortable, but it's widespread and again unlike I've experienced in England or the US. So both pros/cons.

For context I went to boarding school in south of England, lived/worked there for a decade, a decade in the west coast US and a few years in Dublin before moving home.

Queuing. We seem to be a nation of queues. We get in a queue in shops, cafes, at the cinema, bus stops, anything. Woe betide anyone who pushes in! I don't think other countries are like that.

I really can't believe how many think that queuing is a uniquely British thing. It isn't.

Youwillyouwill · 07/12/2022 18:53

@magicthree lots of posters on this thread from other countries who have cited queuing as being common in their own countries and still numpies on here insist It’s uniquely British😀

Cuppasoupmonster · 07/12/2022 19:06

@Youwillyouwill oh bore off will you, your little grinning faces are fooling nobody 😂

Youwillyouwill · 07/12/2022 19:14

@Cuppasoupmonster. I have my very own stalker. A touch obsessed with me😃

Youwillyouwill · 07/12/2022 19:17

Are you enjoying following me around the thread? I notice you completely ignore all the other posters who have called out the ‘unique British’bullsit.

Cuppasoupmonster · 07/12/2022 19:21

You’re obsessed! Just bugger off if the thread irritates you so much rather than sniping at everyone else who is enjoying it.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/12/2022 19:25

Proper, or country pubs.

They’re one thing a Swedish friend’s son said he really missed when back in Sweden, after working in the U.K.

I don't think stalking is unique to Britain either 😂

MarshaBradyo · 07/12/2022 20:07

Shame this thread went down hill

Was a nice read until then

Youwillyouwill · 07/12/2022 20:15

@Igglepiggleslittletoe cuppasoupmonster is definitely unique though😂

Being from and still living in the North West I'm going to say Whit Walks.
Used to love em as a kid as we all got new clothes and given money to spend on the fair.
They still happen to this day.

Did anyone say Pearly Kings and Queens yet?

PMSL, exactly what on this thread makes you think Brits think they're better than the rest of the world? People were asked for "uniquely British things" and have come up with queuing and beans on toast. It's hardly "the first ticket in the lottery of life" 😂

Mic drop 😀

I’m not British but have been living in the UK for many years; my favourite things are:
Politeness
Queueing
Respect for traditions
Exceptionally tolerant people
Keep Calm And Carry On spirit
Sunday roast
Afternoon tea
Quaint cottages and gardens

I’m sure there are more, but these are off the top of my head.

@7Worfs
That actually made me quite tearful; it’s nice to hear that someone actually thinks Brits are ok.
If you read most threads on MN you would think we were the most horrible race in the world.

thanks op I have enjoyed reading this thread it made me chuckle at the absurdity and smile at great things many associate with British culture

Cockney rhyming slang

HRTQueen · 07/12/2022 21:52

the uk is small but there is lots of different accents (no not uniquely British) Even London has different accents north and south is different and then so is east London
