What’s in your loft?

Omg went up there today to get the Christmas decorations down and my heart sank at the amount of stuff up there and how it will ever be sorted especially as I am thinking of moving next year.

I’ve got suitcases full of old clothes including my wedding dress, old toys, stuff from the previous owners, black bags with clean duvets, Christmas decorations, hallowe’en stuff, kitchen stuff that doesn’t fit in the cupboards, just stuff and more and more stuff. I seriously downsized when I moved in here five years ago and everything was in good condition so I kept it but really I should have got rid of it then.

Is everyone else’s in the same state?!

Fuck knows, I have never been up there and have no intention of ever doing so. I am pretty sure DH went up there back in the day but I can't remember why he did, it was possibly to see if we had squirrels in the loft.

MarthaMayWhovier · 02/12/2022 19:25

Our attic is full of crap. We did 3 dump runs the other week and it's STILL full.

LimeCheesecake · 02/12/2022 19:27

Ours was, but then we converted the loft and had to empty it. Made us clear it all out.

I would say look at each box and image your house had burned down - would you rebuy the items in that box with the insurance? If so, keep, if not, get rid.

pigsducksandchickens · 02/12/2022 19:32

Ours is exactly the same as yours OP, down to my Wedding dress...28 years on...

frenchnoodle · 02/12/2022 19:33

Monsters, dragons and ghosts.... And old kids toys we cycle in and out of the toyboxes.

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 02/12/2022 19:34

Nothing. The garage on the other hand 😖

A bat roost and probably mice too...

My house is thatched and the loft space is so cramped that the only way to access it is by crawling on my belly a là the tunnellers escaping from Stalag Luft 1V!

Fortunate really since I would doubtless fill it with crap, AKA 'treasures' otherwise!

YourUserNameMustBeAtLeast3Characters · 02/12/2022 19:38

Insulation.

The garage is full of crap but at least that’s more accessible

I have a mantra about not owning anything you wouldn't take with you if you were moving house tomorrow. Which is a work in progress in terms of actual execution! My eaves (chalet house so upstairs IS the loft) house good quality baby and young child clobber, ready for my nieces/nephews' babies; shoes DS2 isn't ready for yet; one box of sentimental stuff from my childhood that I look at every few years but don't need access to; Christmas decorations and suitcases for holiday. I made DH get rid of some pointless stuff he was hoarding, but he's just asked me to put two old laptops up there - I don't know what we need them for. They'll just sit there til we move then I'll ask him again and it's just deferring the inevitable that we don't need them.

Simplelivingisharderthanitlooks · 02/12/2022 19:40

We cleared out ours last year. It was great - For about a minute. It is just too bloody handy. We have the obvious - suitcases, christmas decorations, memory boxes and all DCs art stuff, hobbies that we intend to revisit and tools that don't get used often... golf clubs... artwork that are still nice and we will use again....

I think that's it from memory - if I went up there ... I could probably give a much bigger list. But it's all stored properly.

Badfootkk · 02/12/2022 19:41

Everything in the whole wide world 🤣

Bluevelvetsofa · 02/12/2022 19:41

Christmas decorations and a couple of boxes. The car is in the garage too.

gianfrancogorgonzola · 02/12/2022 19:42

Ours was also full but we had to clear pre conversion. Best thing ever.

Lagattolove · 02/12/2022 19:43

Me

Yarnosaura · 02/12/2022 19:44

Christmas stuff
Suitcases
Guitar
Fan
3 tardises and a lot of Doctor Who merch
A giant motion activated Transformer that's been up there for 12 years and still works and scares the bejeezus out of me every bloody time.
Plus other random stuff.

Haha! Having fun up there @Lagattolove

Whiskeypowers · 02/12/2022 19:44

I found a beautiful and perfectly preserved dead bluebird in there when I went up the other day to retrieve vacuum packed winter duvets
i do have velux windows there but they are never open so have no idea how it happened

oh and I also have a fuck tonne of baby clothes/ Christmas trees/ random furniture / boxes of books / shoes and all matter of insanity inducing clutter

onedayiwillflyaway1 · 02/12/2022 19:46

Boxes of stuff I thought I should keep but my kids will probably end up skipping it when I'm dead.

Longestnight · 02/12/2022 19:47

Oh yes plenty of lovely baby clothes which I was saving for future generations but have too much sentimental value to part with.

Ours is fully boarded and very organized, everything in labeled containers. Happy about that as we move early next year and I'd hate to deal with it if it was a mess.

@frenchnoodle and @PeachSquashAddict I think @bloodywhitecat s husband passed away earlier this year.

fitflopqueen · 02/12/2022 20:01

Kids (now adults) Lego, wooden train set, my china horses from my child hood. All in plastic boxes.
Mouse traps several - do need to check them but can't bear thought of doing that.
