Olly Murs song I hate you when you’re drunk

I’ve heard this song on radio 2 a couple of times (where it has been chosen as record of the week) and along with it being a crap Olly Murs song, to me the lyrics are highly questionable. It’s bizarre. Sounds like a controlling man telling a (presumably female) partner how they should behave. It seems really regressive and I am surprised it’s being given a high profile on the radio.
Anyone else find this song weird?

I seen this talked about on another thread, although I’ve not heard it yet, bizarre and questionable lyrics as you say. I get creep vibes from him. He seems to try to be mr nice though so it seems a odd song choice to be so obviously about controlling behaviour.

Not just me then. The lyrics are definitely questionable. I’m so surprised that this has been chosen as a single and that someone thought these were acceptable lyrics for a song. It seems misogynistic. I’m assuming it’s written from the perspective of a disapproving male watching a drunk female singing, dancing, taking photos and telling stories - the horror.

I haven’t seen another thread about this (I did a quick search). I see that there have been some tweets from people like Self Esteem and Shaun Keaveny about it.

Just had a look at the lyrics- I suppose the repeated stories may be a little irritating, but the singing and dancing I don't see anything wrong with.

It would have been much better and sounded more reasonable if the lyrics involved:

• Picking a fight in the kebab shop
• Throwing up in a taxi
• Pissing in the wardrobe
• Being arrested

Not someone being a bit merry and then hungover the next day.

i cant really get worked up about the lyrics. Basically hes singing that he hates when his partner gets really drunk, starts acting the fool, buys expensive alcohol and then looking for sympathy when the hangover kicks in the next day. There are threads in mn about op's husbands who have done this, usually with at least one poster suggesting ltb. Howd you know hes not singing about someone he loves who had a drink problem?

I thought the same as you OP. In particular I object to "I hate you" which is really objectionable. "I hate it when you drink" is marginally less objectionable, but it's a horrible title to a horrible song and I have no idea why it's R2 fucking record of the week!

Why don't men like this just say the plain truth 'I hate women' before ending themselves because no one actually cares

Other than mention of makeup on singer's shirt, there's no indication the alkie partner is even female. If the singer were a known gay female or known gay male, there'd be no space at all to say it's an anti-women song.

I hated my ex husband when he was drunk. Really can’t get worked up about this. If a woman were singing it would you call her out? Yeah, thought not.

I think if it was a woman singing it would still be off. So yes I would ‘call her out’.
I guess the fact that it’s odious Ollie Murs just makes it worse.

I don't know the song but looking at the lyrics Giggorata has put up, I don't see the misogyny. I read it as alcohol being used to excuse abusive behaviour by an abusive partner, and the victim unable to leave. Whilst more men abuse women, you can still get abusive females. I feel very strongly about womens rights, and female only spaces, but this song is aimed at an abusive partner not the sex of the person (at least that's my interpretation).

My poor DH told me enough times that he hated me when I was drunk.
I have no problem with the song lyrics at all, or my husband saying it.

I drank too much, I had an alcohol problem, I was a horrible, argumentative, sloppy embarrassing mess when drunk.

Happily alcohol free for 2+ years but reading those lyrics brought back a lot of shame because I made a fool of myself too many times when drunk.

Those are the lyrics, not sure where the pp got those other ones from. If a man thinks a woman is such a ‘mess’ and he ‘hates’ her for singing, repeating herself and taking some photos when she’s had a few drinks, he can fuck off. 😂

I do think it sort of sounds like whoever wrote this thinks women should be more ‘ladylike’. 🙄 So yeah, misogynist bullshit.

Ugh Olly Murs. He’s one of small handful of famous people I simply cannot bear the look or sound of. As soon as his grinning buffoon face appears I’m diving for the off switch. Robbie Williams is another one. I can’t stand a ‘cheeky chappy’.

I’m a bit mixed as that’s kind of how I feel about DH when he’s drunk but it does read badly and I’m now questioning myself

I'm it sure it's controlling.
My best friend went through a phase of drinking too much, she embarrassed herself and everyone around her.
He DH is kindest of men, but he hated her that way, because she was horrible, she admits now she was vile. He never wanted to "control" her, he wanted the best for her as he loves her, and being drunk wasn't that.
