New passport after marriage

passportqueryy · 30/11/2022 16:39

Do I need to renew it or get a new one all together ?

You can wait until it’s due for renewal then get a new one with your changed name. Otherwise you lose the years left on yours

EspeciallyD · 30/11/2022 16:40

No, it's still valid

passportqueryy · 30/11/2022 19:23

I've only got just over a year left on it so I was thinking I might aswell get a new one with my new name, I can do it early can't I ?

OP posts:
mincepiepie · 30/11/2022 19:36

Yes do it early it's worth it. I kept my maiden name and it's a real bind having id in one name and what ever you are applying for in another. I had 9 years left. But after three years I couldn't bear it so I changed it last year. I did it in January so only waited a week for it.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 30/11/2022 19:47

I renewed mine a year before I got married as was going away. Which got cancelled due to Covid. Anyway I'm not losing 9 years so haven't changed it

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 30/11/2022 20:19

I didn’t change mine for 6 years after I got married, just remember your name when booking flights though

Hidingawaytoday · 30/11/2022 20:27

I still haven't changed mine - didn't want to lose the years either! I have my driving licence in my married name so still have ID. The only annoying thing I found was applying for DD's passport as my name on her birth certificate didn't match my name on my passport so had to send my marriage certificate off (but someone else who was in the same situation didn't so 🤷‍♀️)

Just make sure you book holidays in your passport name and that your travel insurance is in that name too.

passportqueryy · 30/11/2022 21:36

I just need to change it all over to save confusion really ! I've done the gp but nothing else so far ! Will I get sent a new bank card when I change my bank? All new to me

OP posts:
ChocoFudge · 30/11/2022 21:45

I've changed my drivers license but not my passport, it hasn't been a problem so far.

Well no, since you don't need to change your name either!

PacificallyRequested · 01/12/2022 00:18

Yeah, you could avoid all this hassle by simply not changing your name. Revolutionary, I know.

passportqueryy · 01/12/2022 05:32

@PacificallyRequested i want to change my name...

OP posts:
ErinAoife · 01/12/2022 05:55

Never bother to change my name when I got married out of pure laziness and you know what I am glad I never did never have any confusion with it even after having kids and when ex husband left at least I did not have the hassle to have to change back to my maiden name

Onthecuspofabreakthrough · 01/12/2022 06:41

Of course you can change your name if you want to! But your OP didn't even say you were going to do this, you just assumed passport issues were a natural consequence of marriage - they're not, they're a consequence of changing your name.

EspeciallyD · 01/12/2022 07:31

That's how it sounded to me too. Marriage itself doesn't affect it, its only if you change your name.

passportqueryy · 01/12/2022 10:19

Oh sorry ! I should've made it more clear I do plan on changing my name just haven't got round to changing everything, it is effort isn't it ! I was just confused as it says on gov that there are different rules for applying for a passport because of a name change.
Do I just have to renew ?

Make sure you sort your driving license out asap. They can fine you or something if the details arent up to date.

If your name is one name at the doctors and one name on your passport it can get confusing if you have to have covid passes to go anywhere abroad.

I'm not sure how many countries still ask for them but when I went last year your name on your covid pass had to match your passport.

I've been married 18 months now and still got my passport to do!

EspeciallyD · 01/12/2022 21:15

We had to scan our passports in to get our Covid passes (to get the NHS app, which is useful even if you don't need a covid passport). DH and I both kept our own names so we didn't have any of this to do.

dementedpixie · 01/12/2022 21:22

Do a renewal in your new name and send your marriage certificate to show the name you want to use now

If you do you passport first than the dvla can use that to change you name on your driving licence. (I think) I did my drivers licence first in October 2021 and it took 4 months to return with my marriage certificate of which I have only one copy and I got married in the US!

My passport was back in a week as I did it January.

The worst thing was the covid pass a name changed at GP but not on passport or travel tickets.

MerryChristmasToYou · 02/12/2022 17:13

If you are going abroad for your honeymoon, book it in the name that is on the passport you'll be travelling with.

stopbeeping · 02/12/2022 17:13

I kept my passport and drivers license
Only changed passport this summer, I have been married 8 years 😬
