Moviprep

I know this probably shouldn't be in chat but..

I have a colonoscopy and endoscopy scheduled tomorrow and I'm really struggling with the Moviprep, I'm only on the first litre but I feel so sick (like on the edge of throwing up sick).

Does anyone know what happens if I'm sick? Do I just continue as normal? I'm not a sicky person so really didn't think I'd struggle with it.

Thanks!

Are you drinking it through a straw and having a “normal” drink in between? I think you can have clear liquids such as Sprite? Might help. Is it working yet? You need to have ingested enough that what is coming out of your bum is clear liquid. If it is it doesn’t matter if you’re sick. Though very unpleasant.

ImHavingAnOldFriendForDinner · 27/11/2022 14:10

I'm using a straw but not drinking in between so I'll try that, I'm not a big drinker so I think drinking a litre is quite a big thing and making me feel a bit yuck. Nearly done the first litre and then have to do the next one at 5pm.

Nothing happening yet.

I know it's hard but try to get as much down as possible otherwise

It needs to be running out clear pale yellow.

I have done it twice. Was sick first time too but on second litre. I found the straw harder than just gulping it.

Good luck

highlandcoo · 27/11/2022 14:29

Lots of sympathy. I have to do this every few years.

Get it very chilled. Is it the horrible vanilla flavour? You can add another colourless flavour to help with the taste.

You need to pretty much gulp it. As in, get the litre down you in 5-10 minutes at most. The first time, I could only get it down in sips and it took over an hour. Total waste of time as it didn't do the job and it had to be all gone through again a couple of weeks later.

The consultant explained it as like a pipe blocked with leaves. To clear the blockage, it's no good trickling down a small amount of water at a time. You have to whoosh buckets down at a time to get the leaves to move. Helped me to understand the process.

Good luck. It's not fun. The endoscopy/colonoscopy is a breeze in comparison honestly.

HBZ287 · 27/11/2022 14:30

I know that the huge quantity of liquid can add to the sick feeling. But you’ll need the extra water / clear drink as the amount of liquid coming out will make you dehydrated quite quickly. Hopefully you’ll feel a bit better when it kicks in and you won’t have so much liquid sloshing around inside!

ImHavingAnOldFriendForDinner · 27/11/2022 14:37

Thanks everyone, husband being very unsympathetic so glad I could get some sympathy on here!

@highlandcoo the consultant's secretary went over the instructions on the phone and told me to sip it over an hour but what you're saying makes more sense. I've finished the first litre and have the second one at 5pm so I'll get that down quicker.

It's a lemon flavour or at least it's supposed to be!!

Suspicious rumblings going on at the moment..

I had to do this twice last year - the first time my op was cancelled after the moviprep.

I know all the advice is to drink another clear liquid alongside, but i physically could not get all that liquid down me.

The second time I started slightly earlier, and didn't drink extra liquid alongside. Once it had started to work its magic I had the room to drink again, so I was still able to mitigate the risk of dehydration.

Hope you're ok and that you have some good reading/viewing material to hand for later!

ImHavingAnOldFriendForDinner · 27/11/2022 15:26

I'm over an hour since finishing the first lot and nothing has happened, I have stomach cramps coming and going but haven't needed the toilet!

OP posts:
highlandcoo · 27/11/2022 15:38

Believe me - you will!

Blowyourowntrumpet · 27/11/2022 15:42

It's vile stuff, you have my sympathy. I'd recommend mixing it with really cold water and holding your nose while you drink it, you won't be able to taste it as much. Good luck.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 27/11/2022 15:44

Sorry if this is too much info, but your bum can get really sore when the diarrhoea kicks in. If you have any sudocrem or vaseline, I'd recommend using it.

Nadal · 27/11/2022 15:48

I found it much easier prepping into water bottles and necking it that way. Cold definitely

RitaSueandBobtwo · 27/11/2022 15:49

Its better if its chilled and drank as quickly as poss. I would also recommend having absolutely everything going if your having both procedures.

I was offered throat spray, gas and air and sedation and had the lot so the procedures were fine no discomfort or embarrassment.

worldcupchaos · 27/11/2022 15:54

Definitely prepare the moviprep and keep it in the fridge when your drinking it, the colder the better. It's so disgusting that sips of lemon squash or adding lemon squash may help.
Agree with a PP, have the sedation, it made me feel really mellow and chilled, it was the only upside to the whole process

ImHavingAnOldFriendForDinner · 27/11/2022 16:07

Ok things seem to be kicking off slowly! Don't want to be accused of being a poo troll so I'll say no more, I'm quite glad actually as my stomach was so uncomfortable!

I'm definitely having sedation and I've been told that I'll also receive a throat spray and then a painkiller before the colonoscopy, I'm rubbish with drugs and don't need a lot so I'm hoping that will help me block it all out 😂

1hr until the next lot!

MrsMigginsCat · 27/11/2022 16:09

You have my sympathy OP. I have these every two years. Moviprep is grim. For me, the trick is to mix it with really cold Coke Zero and drink it through a straw. I tend to take big gulps, none of this sipping nonsense, just to get it down quicker. I promise it will work! Be near a loo and cover your bum with Vaseline or Sudocrem.

Take everything they offer!

Moviprep is vile!!! I managed the first lot, but the second made me throw up.
Its honestly the worst part of the procedure!

LadyMarmaladeAtkins · 27/11/2022 16:10

Glad to see you are getting on better with it now. If you are sick it's fine, just carry on. I agree about the lemon drink, but not if you like drinking lemonade the rest of the time. Maybe try orange Fanta or Vimto if you don't want to ruin mixers for Christmas!

I mixed mine with Sprite which I don't normally drink, and also had a few boiled sweets to suck on in between times, and mine was very clear, I watched the whole thing (no sedation). Have sedation if you prefer though, it's not a competition, I just didn't want it. I had light sedation for investigation of my upper tract a previous time though and would again.

MyIgloo · 27/11/2022 16:25

I have to have these lovely procedures 3 x a year sometimes more if I’m unlucky

That stuff has never seen a bloody lemon…

Try it ice cold mixed with lemonade drink it as quickly as possible and drink lots and lots of fluid once you’ve finished

I once ended up on a drip after as I completely dehydrated myself 🤦‍♀️

On a side note make sure you have some wet flushable wipes and something soothing like baby bottom butter to help with the sting normal loo roll will hurt after a while

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 27/11/2022 16:29

My tip if you have to take two sachets is to dilute the second lot with a different flavour from the first lot.

ImHavingAnOldFriendForDinner · 27/11/2022 18:53

I've been such a wimp with this last litre, I'm normally quite strong minded and good at stuff but this has nearly beaten me! I feel for those of you who have to do this regularly.

It's completely taken away my nerves for tomorrow though because I've just been concentrating on drinking this bloody drink!

OP posts:
HBZ287 · 27/11/2022 18:55

To be completely honest I didn’t finish my second litre. But it had done the job. Good luck tomorrow.

ImHavingAnOldFriendForDinner · 27/11/2022 18:56

@HBZ287 it's been two hours and I've got about a quarter of a glass left!

SynchOrSwim · 27/11/2022 19:00

I mix it with squash and have it very cold.

HBZ287 · 27/11/2022 19:01

If you’re running clear then you’re probably ok…
