What do you like to eat when you're depressed?

I've been unwell recently (physically and mentally) and I'm very run down. I've completely lost my appetite even though I feel hungry. My body is crying out for some nutrition but nothing appeals at all. What easy/comforting/delicious things do you like to eat when you're feeling low?

Sorry you are feeling this way. For me, it would be crumpets and butter, but that doesn't tick the nutritious box! Or tomato soup and crusty bread.
Or a lovely big paneer curry with naan bread.

heldinadream · 24/11/2022 12:41

Chocolate. I know it's not the best but if you're not eating enough I'd say get the calories in any way you can. Just to tempt you - look what I'm ploughing my way through! That is my very own box of Lindor. 😛
Also when I get sick of chocolate I find I want something healthy to balance it out, so I start fancying lentil soup and stuff. So don't be frightened to start with chocolate.
I'm sorry you've been ill.

Ice cream

Marmite on toast

Soup

Spaghetti bol

Smoothie / fruit / yoghurt

Something spicy

Sometimes you just need to start fuelling your body and once you do your appetite kicks back in. Or you need to look at eating like showering. It might feel like a chore, or even unpleasant when you're very depressed, but it needs to be done. When your blood sugars are balanced it helps energy and frame of mind.

Rice pudding

Lillysmamma · 24/11/2022 12:50

And cheese on toast too.

westthroughthewhitleywood · 24/11/2022 12:55

Mashed potato, baked beans with either fish fingers or nuggets on the side. Easy to make, comforting but has some nutrition to it.
I hope you feel better soon.

Teenagekicksmyass · 24/11/2022 12:55

Macaroni cheese

CallieQ · 24/11/2022 12:57

Soup.. home made or supermarket nice quality

Ivyonafence · 24/11/2022 12:57

Going through something similar. I try to drink lemonade to get calories in and I take vitamins.

Are you getting help for your depression?

Joystir59 · 24/11/2022 12:59

Lentil soup with lemon juice squeezed in.

Thank you, this is a good point that I probably needed to hear!

Toast with real butter and bovril

loveislouderthanwar · 24/11/2022 13:46

I have beans on toast with eggs and brown sauce. That's my go to comfort food. Had it for tea on Monday.

ToffeeCandle · 24/11/2022 13:47

Soup, porridge, yogurt, buttered toast. Lots of herbal teas and water.

CuteBabyFarts · 24/11/2022 13:48

Jaffa cakes 😳

DuchessDandelion · 24/11/2022 13:50

Ooh yes jaffa cakes

Or porridge with real cream and honey!

sleighbellsjiggling · 24/11/2022 13:50

When I was at my lowest and just couldn't eat anything I started with bananas and yoghurt. Eventually my appetite increased to the point I could stomach meals again. I tried to take multi vits to give me something decent too.

I hope you're doing ok

CarolNoE · 24/11/2022 13:55

Baked beans in a mug and melt cheese through with hot toast & melting butter plus a mug of tea.

Lostatseawithnolighthouse · 24/11/2022 13:56

Sunday dinner

jay55 · 24/11/2022 13:58

Wine gums.

Getting some calories in, even in the least nutritious way gets my brain working a bit better. So I can then contemplate soup or a pasty, and finally graduate to more nutritious dishes.

Toomanysleepycats · 24/11/2022 14:01

I get that feeling when you don’t feel like eating, but start feeling ill because you need to eat.

Often I’ll just have something like a bit of scrambled egg (no toast), or a piece of ham or even just one cold sausage. Then it sort of kickstarts my appetite and I’m back to normal, scoffing biscuits.

Runestone · 24/11/2022 14:10

Nachos, gradually moving onto healthier nacho toppings the better I feel. Pizza, moving onto homemade healthier pizzas like wrap pizza or pitta pizza the better I feel. Anything cheesy.

Smallorangecat · 24/11/2022 14:13

When I don’t want to eat but know I need to:
toast
crumpets with melted cheese on
soup
chocolate hobnobs dipped in tea
plain brioche rolls

cezannesapple · 24/11/2022 14:14

Scrambled eggs on toast. Banana. Hot chocolate.
