If you are single, do you sleep on one side of the bed?

This is really silly, but currently it's a thing.

I've been single about 8 years and since then have always just slept on 'my' side of the bed, the right side. It's a king size bed. It just doesn't feel right if I don't. All my things are on my side bedside table, charger, lamp, radio etc.

My bed is a pillow top type and every now and then I need to rotate it, as a dip starts to form where I lay.

I felt the dip again last week so rotated again, but the swapped rotated side is still dipped from the last rotatation. (I thought the pillow top would puff up if not used, but it seems it no longer is).

I woke up a few mornings with backache and got the dreaded realization that I probably need a new mattress. The thing is though, is that the middle part of the bed is perfectly fine and practically unslept on.

So this week I have moved... To the middle of the bed. But I am not sleeping well and it just feels all wrong. This morning I woke up in my usual spot in the dip on the right, I'd even moved my pillow over with me in the night.

I'm tired. I haven't slept well. But I absolutely cannot afford a new mattress now. But the middle of the bed is perfectly fine but it's giving me anxiety when I get into bed, as it's just not right.

I know this sounds quite ridiculous, my bedroom is my solace, my me space, and how silly is it that I'm getting anxious at night as I have to move over a less than a meter to try to sleep better.

Am I alone here?

Yes I always sleep on the same side nearest to the door, squashed up by the dog!

MarmaladeFatkins · 20/11/2022 08:23

I'm trying Marmalade 😂

You are quite spot on with the pencil comment though.

My aim is to be a starfish.

It's difficult going from a pencil to a starfish though.

I see I'm not too alone in this then.

I think I just need to get out of my comfort zone (literally) and come to terms with the fact that the middle it will have to be for now.

Which means I also have to find a new spot for all the pillows at night.....

great extra pillows and put them down each side so you are sort of a filling in a sandwich. Me I tend to have a dog on the bottom, one snuggled lengthways next to me and my son crawls in the side the door isn’t on and puts himself in my arms and we all sleep happily.

it's a state of mind @Highlighta ...you have to decide if you want to be a pencil in life, or a star-fish. and then just go for it. you can do it, I believe in you

Sunbird24 · 20/11/2022 08:44

’My’ side of the bed switched when I moved house and I’ve only just realised! In both cases I chose to sleep on the side nearer the bedroom door, probably just because it’s easier to get in/out of.

Not suggesting you move house @Highlighta, that would be a bit drastic! Could you rearrange your furniture at all though if that would have the same effect?

Sunbird24 · 20/11/2022 08:47

Oh, and I’m neither a starfish (heating set too low!) or a pencil (snoring 🤫), I think I’m possibly some sort of prawn, or something else that curls up on itself

FiveGoMadInDorset · 20/11/2022 08:48

I have downsized to a double bed since DH died as moved to a smaller bedroom, I now sleep on whichever side the cat lets me

Slothmomma · 20/11/2022 09:04

I have a king size and been single 5 years since exdh left - and yes I still only sleep on "my" side of the bed 🤷‍♀️😄

Ridingladybugs · 20/11/2022 09:09

I have a super king and it’s been over 5 years since ex left and despite trying I still sleep on my side. It’s ridiculous - I’m wondering if it’s to do with pillows though as I still have 4 pillows so bed set up as two sides of that makes sense

BertieBotts · 20/11/2022 09:10

When DH lived abroad I was an absolute bed hog and slept diagonally across the middle.

PiggyInTheLidl · 20/11/2022 09:13

Rather than turn it over, turn it round by 180’ ? I.e put foot to head.

Maybe I am not getting something.

Singleandproud · 20/11/2022 09:20

When I first had DD I bought a double as I'm an adult and why not, DD took up one half as we coslept and now the cats take up that space and I sleep on a tiny portion of the mattress.

I am due a new bed now as its over 10 years old and I don't know whether to just go to a single to gain more floorspace in my bedroom or to stick with a bigger bed but half of it goes unused but that seems a bit sad.

Sunbird24 · 20/11/2022 09:23

@Singleandproud why not split the difference and look at small doubles?

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 20/11/2022 09:25

My Chihuahua lately chooses dead center so I sleep diagonally to fit around him.Smile

Supposedly you can restore a pillow top using the suction of the vacuum cleaner. Haven't tried yet but am meaning to.

TealSapphire · 20/11/2022 09:36

Three years on and I still sleep on 'my' side. Youngest DS has migrated from the middle to ex's side. I'm a pencil to make room for the three cats and a dog too. Although often wake in a weird position as have moved in my sleep to accommodate a cats preference!

doggiedazy · 20/11/2022 09:49

I sleep in the middle of a super-king size (bed chosen by ex) with the dog wedged up against me so I don't get any benefit of the huge bed at all Sad
I need to buy a smaller one, but decent beds are so expensive!

Tryingtokeepgoing · 20/11/2022 10:10

I slept on ‘my’ side for two years after my husband died as well, and did so for two years. But when I moved house I switched…it wasn’t a conscious decision exactly, but the layout of the room and the position of the bed meant it just seemed more logical to sleep on what was his side. I do still think about it at times though

MyTing · 20/11/2022 10:13

I'm long term single. Sleep on a particular side but I rotate the mattress every time I change the bed. I turn it 180 one time then flip it the next so all parts of it get a use evenly.

Works well. No dips.

It's kingside huge and heavy but it's doable solo with the right technique

Perhaps a pillow top can't be flipped as well as rotated ?

fernz · 20/11/2022 10:18

Middle, although the cats tend to choose the very centre point every night now it's colder so sometimes I just sleep wherever there's space 😹

Peridot1 · 20/11/2022 10:20

I sleep in a king size bed alone and I switch sides every week so the mattress doesn’t dip on one side. DH also sleeps in a king size alone but on the same side all the time so his mattress will dip eventually. And even with separate rooms I can often still hear the snoring hence the separate rooms!

EBearhug · 20/11/2022 13:54

I have been in a hotel bed the last two nights and slept in the middle.

At home I have a king size and mostly sleep in the middle with a slight preference for the door side, which is the right if I lie on my back, but the left if I stand and look at the bed... I move the pillow into the middle before putting my head down, and I sleep on my side (rather than the bed's side) curled round a long bolster pillow,so I guess that helps keep me more central.

The instructions on my mattress label say I can turn it round 180°, from head to toe, which I do every few months, but I shouldn't flip it right over, so I don't. It's a quite expensive mattress, and I've not noticed any dips.

I have noticed when sharing a bed, I still have a tendency towards the middle, but I suspect that's the novelty of having another naked body next to me. With one guy, this may he'd our left/right preferences. With a second, we seemed to swap just as things worked out, and if one got up to go to the loo at some point, so I might wake up sleeping on a different bit of the bed from where I started. And the others left before I needed to find out if they had any preferences about actually sleeping in the bed.

But even though I might usually sleep in the middle, I still know which us my side.

EBearhug · 20/11/2022 13:55

this matched our left/right preferences

Smallorangecat · 20/11/2022 14:15

Like others, I sleep on my side because the other side is DH’s so that would be wrong. He died 14 months ago. There’s usually a child and at least 1 cat there anyway.

Ah Marmalade, I appreciate the faith you have in me.

I am starting the metamorphosis, you see in no time I'm going to be a proper starfish butterfly.
