Hi all
i'm embroiled in elderly mummy stuff (respite care) so keep getting home about 10 and finding the world has changed a lot in a few hours!

is Twitter going, is it melodrama? Mass hysteria? AFAICS the facts are they are closing their offices for the weekend?

thanks.

IDK seems like Elon Musk has broken his $44 billion toy

Yesterday was the deadline for Twitter employees to sign up to his new ''hardcore Twitter 2.0''

The vast majority didn't and have left

miceonabranch · 18/11/2022 08:35

It's a foul misogynistic incel cesspit so hopefully this will be the end of it.

Yes, I figured they would
I am now wondering if he bought it in order to break it. Stranger things have happened. Isn't he friends with the previous owner as well?

I hope it burns around him. Can't stand the man.

I follow writers and artists so don't look at any of that.

it has provided many laughs on dull work days but that was years ago.

He must have some kind of plan right?

balalake · 18/11/2022 08:54

If it is the end of Twitter as it has been, then not a bad thing. Just then hope Facebook declines as well.

Business exit strategies are often pretty surreal, as many of us know if we've lost our jobs due to them...especially if re- employed as a consultant later. So I do think there's got to be a plan.

Absolutely agree. But it probably won't, the obscenely rich always land on their feet. It's appears to be the way of the world.

Yeah people said equivalent stuff like this in the 15th century about the printing press

EmmaAgain22 · 18/11/2022 09:03

I was just saying to a friend yesterday - she's mid 50s - we are seeing the next generation of incompetents, like the directors she works with can do all the blue sky thinking crap but have no awareness of how stuff works. That group are now hiring juniors who are the same.

Was it boo.com, that first internet clothing place that went bust because they didn't understand their product? It feels like we are cycling back round to that. I don't just mean Twitter is a possible for that, I mean a lot of businesses.

And then on MN I read that people consider work calls an act of aggression - raised by robo chats to fix stuff, maybe that's a factor in loss of practical skills.

sorry, massive topic, but really just wondering if Twitter is about to close.

Musk has a bit of a reputation for being impulsive/opening his mouth and putting his foot in it. See also calling rescuer in Thai cave a paedophile, running his mouth off about Tesla tanking the shares etc etc

So Shock maybe not?

Sindonym · 18/11/2022 09:10

Musk is a narcissist with zero insight.

I have found Twitter a really good place to connect with others working in my field - have made some really useful relationships through it -
so I hope he doesn’t destroy it completely. He might do though - if he throws one of his toddler tantrums.

MermaidEyes · 18/11/2022 09:14

I like Twitter, if you follow the right people then it's fun and informative. I don't know what's going to happen with it, but the lenders will certainly be wanting their money back so it has to stay around in some form.

Facebook can do one though. It's all adverts and sponsored posts with the odd one thrown in for good measure by someone you actually know. Tbh it will be gone in its current form within the next few years, most teens and 20 somethings don't use it so as the older users die out and drift away, younger users won't be replacing them. They're all on Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter.

You curate your own feed - choose whom to follow, whom to block. I’m sure that content is there but I don’t see it. I see thoughtful posts from writers and artists and funny jokes. If you’re seeing tweets from incels in your feed then you’re following and interacting with a certain demographic.

Besides, cut the head off the Hydra and two will grow in its place. Those people won’t leave the internet because Twitter has gone.

Agreed. I have a personal twitter and a writer twitter and they're different worlds, though incels inhabit neither.

I do have to say that Putin could start shelling the UK with old bagels and writer's twitter would still be oblivious!

HelensToenail · 18/11/2022 09:31

This is the level of chaos

Alex Cohen [on twitter]

I was laid off from Twitter this afternoon. I was in charge of managing badge access to Twitter offices

Elon just called me and asked if I could come back to help them regain access to HQ as they shut off all the badges and accidently locked themselves out ''

Apparently as it is so well designed it will keep running for a while without human intervention but the minute something goes wrong it will fail as all the maintainence engineers have gone

Lots wrong with Twitter content but many good things about the platform too - seems a shame to me that it's been wrecked by one man's vanity

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 18/11/2022 09:33

I like twitter 🤷

Theunamedcat · 18/11/2022 09:33

He needs to understand people are not going to put up with being treated like shit they will say no

KatherineJaneway · 18/11/2022 09:38

In what world would the actions he has taken go over well? He cuts staff numbers by 50% then tells remaining staff they have to work 'long hours at high intensity' or they are out. If they choose to leave, they get three months money. I suspect lots of them could easily find another job so I don't blame them for leaving. I wouldn't want to work for him.

They are locking staff out to stop sabotage I suspect.

I’m trying to develop a writer Twitter 😁

EmmaAgain22 · 18/11/2022 09:47

and that was the joy of past Twitter, but I unfollowed a lot of writers because they started on about politics too.
