Bamboo socks: does everyone else have this problem?

I really wanted to be more sustainable so for the last couple of years I've bought bamboo socks for the family. But they get holes in them in about half the time of other socks. I do find them comfy (though tbh no comfier than decent quality socks of cotton/nylon mix) but I'm fed up now of having to replace them so often. Do others have the same problem?

No, I’ve had BAM socks for several years. One or two of the trainer socks are wearing a bit thin, but they’ve had a hard life.

SilentNike · 14/11/2022 15:54

My BAM socks have lasted brilliantly.

UWhatNow · 14/11/2022 16:00

Yes I love their softness but they only last 5 mins.

Nope, I've got Bamboo socks from BAM which are fantastic and have been in constant use for 5+ years with no signs of damage.

TwinklingStarlight · 14/11/2022 16:13

Yes and I actually find them less comfortable than cotton. I'm not a fan.

Came here hoping pandas were nibbling your feet!

I get a free pair from BAM at least three times a year and they are all still going strong, some are years old. Weirdly tho the black pairs I bought DH last Xmas, most of them were binned by summer because of holes.

howaboutchocolate · 14/11/2022 16:16

Like most things it massively depends on the brand. Some bamboo socks are thin and rubbish, some are really good quality and last ages. Also be aware that not all "bamboo" is environmentally better. Some methods of producing it aren't great. Others are. Again it depends on the brand and their ethics, or if they're just green washing.

I saw the thread title and thought what holes in after 5 minutes? And yep, exact same thing happens to me.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 14/11/2022 16:24

Yep, me too - I've actually worn through the sole on one pair. Holes in the toes too. Annoying as some are really pretty. I try to darn them when I can be bothered.

LightUpTheWoods · 14/11/2022 16:26

BAM only last about 2 mins.
I find Sock Shop bamboo socks incredibly hot.
Thought bamboo socks are ace, and harvesting.

JeniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 14/11/2022 16:28

My Thought ones are thicker than my standard socks and have lasted better.

JeniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 14/11/2022 16:29

I have a couple of Bam pairs and they are wearing well too.

spiderlight · 14/11/2022 16:35

My only issue with bamboo socks is that they're slippery - I don't wear shoes/slippers at home most of the time and have nearly slipped and fallen down the stairs a couple of times in bamboo socks, so I don't tend to wear them now.

GiantKitten · 14/11/2022 16:39

I went back to cotton mix. As well as wearing out too fast the bamboo ones just feel claggy 😕

FancyFelix · 14/11/2022 16:44

Me too

NotMeNoNo · 14/11/2022 16:44

Viscose/bamboo is a weaker fibre. Bam sock probably compensate by being good quality and firmly spun/knitted.

OllytheCollie · 14/11/2022 16:45

I get thought ones each Christmas from MiL. They are rubbish and wear through in no time. Haven't tried other brands as a result. UK made wool socks are long lasting but pricey.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 14/11/2022 16:55

Bamboo is essentially rayon/viscose and isn’t a very strong fibre.

The ones that have lasted are probably made from thicker yarns.

redredwineub40 · 14/11/2022 17:02

I prefer bamboo socks and tights but they don't last as long for me either, always holes

Whatthetrolley · 14/11/2022 17:35

I got some amazing orangutan bamboo socks last Christmas, whilst say with my feet up on a Teams call earlier I noticed they were quite worn in places and thought "I've hardly worn them" not just me!

freyamay74 · 14/11/2022 17:37

Thanks all. I've tried various brands, BAM, Bare Kind, Thought clothing ... sounds like it's not just me then!

ReviewingTheSituation · 14/11/2022 17:40

Yep- same problem. They just wear through quicker. Various brands, not just one.

Wool socks are my go-to now (or socks with some wool in them at least)

daisychicken · 14/11/2022 17:55

I find they fall down more so I'm constantly pulling them up, which is a pain when wearing shoes and walking! I've gone back to cotton or thermal socks.

BuwchGochGota · 14/11/2022 17:57

Yes. I've had several pairs from BAM and they've all worn out really quickly.
