Bleach

Today I had rare moment of cleaning enthusiasm and tackled some mould on the bathroom grout and walls.

Because I cannot STAND bleach, I used a large washing up bowl full of hot water and washing up liquid with about 2 tsps of bleach added, and scrubbed with the green side of a scrubby sponge. With the window wide open. That's as much bleach as I can tolerate. All came up lovely.

DH has just got in from work and says "I can smell gas in the house!!". I realised he could smell the bleach, a tiny amount, all rinsed off 6 hours ago. We're obviously similar in that respect, or he's just not used to the smell of bleach in the house lol.

My last bottle of bleach lasted me from Sept 2019 to Oct 2022, more than 3 years.

Bleach fans who go through bottles of the stuff every week - how can you tolerate it? It's utterly disgusting. It smells dirty instead of clean?

Cold water with bleach.

I only use it when there's a stomach bug in the house. It doesnt clean anything. It can't. It's bleach. Weirds me out that people use it to clean with.

@Incacat2

I've been saying this for years!!!! Smells exactly like sperm 🤮

It does! But I also get the gas smell that op mentions. I

I dislike the smell but also accept the usefulneds of it in some situations.

RedRedWhiney · 11/11/2022 22:30

Never thought about it. I buy a bottle every week with my food shop, as did my mam and nana!
Nan used to use half a bottle doing the front step.

I've never owned any, I used to work as a commercial cleaner many year ago and even the faintest whiff of it makes me feel queasy.

It's just 🤢

Absolutely!

notmyrealmoniker · 11/11/2022 22:42

It's the only thing I trust to disinfect

HairyMcLarie · 11/11/2022 23:57

Bleach smells vile. White vinegar is a much better cleaner of mould and grime and doesnt actually leave the place smelling of vinegar!

Oh FFS! I’ve been meaning to buy some bleach for weeks, the mildew in my kitchen’s taking over. I feel ashamed an unwomanly now, I will have to purchase some tomorrow and sort it out 😖

NO! Vinegar!! It's miraculous on mildew!

thaegumathteth · 12/11/2022 00:02

I only use it to clean the loo and if there's a sickness bug in the house. Oh and sometimes squirt down kitchen sink.

Definitely only with cold water though.

VeganFromSveden · 12/11/2022 00:34

I use it down the loo and drains.
also to whiten stained dishcloths as I dislike the look of them and it feels wrong to use them for dishes when stained.
useful also for brightening up dulled white shirts.
pp says it’s not a cleaner as such…
what really then, should we be using bleach for?
I’ve heard that it’s very (maybe use face mask when using?) toxic.

Sparklingbrook · 12/11/2022 05:22

That's a good question. I've never used bleach for anything. I don't buy it (with the exception of Ace bleach in the washing machine for football kits).
I don't understand pouring bleach down drains or in the loo at all, or why you'd need to bleach a front step. Confused

StarlightLady · 12/11/2022 05:27

I like the clean bleach smell. My nickname is Ms Demestos 😂.

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 12/11/2022 06:32

It smells of semen to me . I’m being serious, hasn’t anyone else thought the same ?

AgentProvocateur · 12/11/2022 06:42

Another one asking what you use it for? In my 50-odd years, I’ve never once bought it.

OceanbreezeSun · 12/11/2022 06:44

I also hate the smell of bleach. It’s repulsive. I don’t associate it with being a clean smell, more a toxic, industrial smell. It genuinely makes me feel abit nauseous, so we don’t use it in our home.

IamTheBridge · 12/11/2022 06:45

Love the smell of bleach but buy HG Mould Spray - it's much easier to use!

Fatcatriot · 12/11/2022 07:15

I have never understood the obsession for bleach

Gufo · 12/11/2022 07:30

What is good to use to clean the loo instead of bleach? I've seen the error of my ways!

RocketIceLollie · 12/11/2022 07:50

I only use bleach down the loo. I don't get any semen smell from it though....it just smells like a swimming pool to me.

The need to kill germs down the loo is an odd one really. It seems to be mainly a woman thing - You don't see many men in the supermarket putting a bottle of bleach into the trolley! Part of me thinks we've been brainwashed by clever marketing TV adverts over the years by domestos etc that germs down the loo are the biggest menace in our homes in order for us to continue buying their products....In reality the germs down the loo are unlikely to harm us. We can't see them. They are probably just living their best life under the rim of the loo minding their own business and there we are shoving the bleach bottle under the rim of the loo covering all the germs in bleach. I dunno. Maybe it's a power thing for us woman. Maybe we have a subconscious dark side to us that we like committing a kill of millions of tiny little defenceless germ lifeforms. It's an easy kill with no guilt trip to answer to. I dunno.

lljkk · 12/11/2022 07:57

Can't remember if I've ever bought a bottle of bleach. Sometimes we have spray cleaner that partly has bleach in it. Bleach spray was useful to get rid of wall mould I concede. Also agree the smell makes me gag. I hate disinfectant / strong soap smells you find in lots of public places. My sense of smell is pretty weak, so I imagine the disinfectant stink is horrendous for people with good sense of smell.

Vinegar got some colours of mould off my tiles. This is also smelly, mind.

OldTinHat · 12/11/2022 08:14

I agree OP! The smell of bleach is vile and I never use it.

PinkButtercups · 12/11/2022 08:18

Oh I love bleach. Smells so clean to me.

I could sniff it all day Blush
