What things did you really enjoy but your DC will never get to experience?

Just reminiscing today and thinking about how much I enjoyed the Clothes Show magazine and actually magazines in general. I feel like these are pretty obsolete now and my teens will never have this simple experience.

Same goes for going to the video shop and choosing a film for the night or waiting for the chart show every weekend to record it.

Things are obviously completely different nowadays. What things did you really enjoy that your DC will never experience?

Wow I’d forgotten the Clothes Show! I went to the roadshow once at the NEC and it was brilliant to teenage me!

collective tv watching will be what my children will miss out on. Everyone watched gladiators or blind date and talked about it. It was a cultural togetherness. Now people could have streamed anything.

I think they will also miss the freedom of not being a slave to social media the way you g people now are

Life with a huge family.

I have 5 siblings. Her dad is one of 8.

I only have 2 kids.

AgathaMystery · 05/11/2022 22:27

Gosh yes to choosing a video.

desperately looking forward to Xmas radio times - the ONLY time we ever got it… then highlighting Mary Poppins & My Fair Lady & all the other films we wanted to watch.

Top 20 countdown on R1… taping it & pausing during Simon Mayo talking… then playing it all week to learn all the songs.

Going to a new country but not knowing much about it beforehand - just whatever was in the brochure or you’d seen on the Judith Chalmers holiday show or other oriole’s pics. We went to the Far East in the very early nineties when I was a teenager and all the pictures I’d seen were black and white or from the school atlases. the sheer joy of discovery I guess.

Yes this! I still buy it but the DC don't have any interest

Excited anticipation of waiting for photos to come back after a holiday - splashing out on 1 hour service to find it wasn't worth the money !

ilovepixie · 05/11/2022 22:40

Getting smash hits magazine and the excitement of being able to read the lyrics of songs.

Polkadotpjs · 05/11/2022 22:40

Anticipation of a meet up "in town" and no other method of communication other than the original time/ place agreement. It made one unable to be flaky

IncessantNameChanger · 05/11/2022 22:42

Playing out in the street. I live by a A road but in a very rural hamlet

POTC · 05/11/2022 22:43

School residential trips
Change of school system from 3 tier to 2 tier meant the eldest missed out on middle school trips and high school were adjusting to having younger students so he didn't get them there either, he would have gone on geography field trip for gcse/6th form but covid stopped that.
Youngest had his yr8 one cancelled when covid hit and they obviously haven't been able to run any since.

PuttingDownRoots · 05/11/2022 22:44

They find the idea of waiting week until the next episode of something bizarre. Or watching TV at a set time....

pastabest · 05/11/2022 22:45

it mattering who was number one in the charts each week and at Christmas.

physically holding music - a tape or a cd and the little booklets that came in them

licking stamps

pub quizzes where no one cheats using their phone

looking at childhood photos in physical albums

waiting to get photos developed

mamabear715 · 05/11/2022 22:46

Just the freedom.. leaving home in the mornings in the school hols & not coming home for hours.. on the horse, in the fields or woods.. not a flicker of fear, who'd be waiting in a field to see if a young girl walked by? (Different now, I guess..) :-(

MammaWeasel · 05/11/2022 22:47

As a child, Standing in a car, straddling the 2 front seats, whizzing along with my head out of the open sun roof. Thrilling! Yes, I am old......

Danikm151 · 05/11/2022 22:47

Playing out and being back in when the lights came on

waiting for the 24 photos you took on holiday to develop and half of them being blurry

watching SMTV live on a Saturday morning- those were the only hours of kids tv on all day- now kids can pick anything on streaming sites

rewinding a video

That was me …being absolutely crushed that the one pic you took of a fling was overexposed 🤩

TravellingSpoon · 05/11/2022 22:49

Going to Woolies for a bag of Pick and Mix. No other store around nowadays can compete.

BattenburgSlice · 05/11/2022 22:51

travelling in the boot of an estate car waving at the car behind 😂
freedom to roam the fields all day from 6 years
smash hits and Jackie magazines
decent chocolate

Justcallmebebes · 05/11/2022 22:52

Tombstoning into a bright clean ocean

lookslikeabombhitit · 05/11/2022 22:53

Days out and holidays with my very much loved and adored grandparents. DH parents and mine have very little urge to do anything with their DG other than coo over pictures and pretend to be grandparents of the year. 😔

maddy68 · 05/11/2022 22:54

Freedom of movement. I worked in many countries travelling round
It's all so sad

Shouldawouldacoulda30 · 05/11/2022 22:54

Going out with my friends all day ,walks ,friends house and getting home at 7 …no checking phone calls from parents and having to account for every minute we were out. Am sure our parents were happier and as a child I cannot imagine how suffocating it would have been!! We all were fine and used our intelligence to avoid dodgy people.

Macaroni1924 · 05/11/2022 22:55

Spending forever in the video store deciding what to rent, then jumping next door to the 3 in 1 for a treat.

Watching the box music channel and watching the numbers come up along the bottom and waiting for your favourite songs to record your own music videos.

Listening to the chat show on a Sun night and recording favourite songs.

Getting excited when a new single was out and collecting all your favourites.

Loved highlighting the tv magazine too 😂

Actual phone calls with friends instead of all these annoying voice notes and/or txting.

Everyone squeezing in the car after bday parties or family trips to the caravan. The fun and excitement of travelling to Blackpool on my grandpas knee.

10p mixtures

EndlessMagpies · 05/11/2022 22:56

Seeing the original Star Wars film in the cinema when it first came out.

Crackerjack!

Watching Morecambe and Wise on Christmas Day.

Coloured toilet paper (although you never know, it might make a comeback) Grin

Monkeytennis97 · 05/11/2022 22:56

Decent chocolate indeed. Cadbury's red boost.

Nice drink of Quattro.

Packets of crisps with more than 10 crisps in them.

The LWT logo... weekend at last!

Doubledenimrocks · 05/11/2022 23:02

Sitting on the stairs on the actual, plugged in phone trying to have surreptitious calls with my friends without my parents overhearing.

Watching Shooting Stars on a Friday night with friends whilst drinking and getting ready before we went clubbing.
