What things did you really enjoy but your DC will never get to experience?

Just reminiscing today and thinking about how much I enjoyed the Clothes Show magazine and actually magazines in general. I feel like these are pretty obsolete now and my teens will never have this simple experience.

Same goes for going to the video shop and choosing a film for the night or waiting for the chart show every weekend to record it.

Things are obviously completely different nowadays. What things did you really enjoy that your DC will never experience?

Taping the charts on a Sunday and desperately hovering over the pause button so you could cut out the DJ in between!!

pyjamafashionista · 05/11/2022 23:10

Also watching Blockbusters and never tiring of hearing "i'll have a P please Bob" 🤣

allboysherebutme · 05/11/2022 23:16

Making wonderful memories with my grandparents. X

Luredbyapomegranate · 05/11/2022 23:17

The feeling the world is fundamentally getting better

I was young between 1989 and 2001 - who knew that was the icing on the post wat cake, and once we had that.. well the next batch wasn’t so good.

Luredbyapomegranate · 05/11/2022 23:18

Post WAR cake

squarepegleg · 05/11/2022 23:18

So many things. My children wait for nothing. Everything is instant.

I think the way relationships play out isn't good.

Over instant message means nobody ever has time to cool off or take a break. No waiting by the phone. Their brains are just so busy.

I am trying to be positive about the changes but honestly I think some things are just shit.

Yy to grandparents who aren't interested. What a shame

PuttingDownRoots · 05/11/2022 23:20

Your parents not knowing where you are... but trusting you will be home.

The top 40

Dacadactyl · 05/11/2022 23:24

I used to enjoy taping songs off the radio.

SecretVictoria · 05/11/2022 23:27

Standing up in the hump between the seats in the car, all the way from Lancashire to Weston-Super-Mare.

Sneakily watching The Mary Whitehouse Experience.

Original Raspberry Ribena.

Proper chocolate.

Proper drinks without sweetener.

2 US Dollars to the pound.

Takeaway/eating out being a rare treat.

Justcannot · 05/11/2022 23:27

The freedom to live, work and travel across their continent with no restrictions.

I used to enjoy taping songs off the radio.

And getting really annoyed if your mum came in and asked you a question when it was the number 1 you’d waited 3 hours to record.

Ditto "I'll have an e please Bob"

Aquamarine1029 · 05/11/2022 23:32

Life without mobile phones and social media.

Dave20 · 05/11/2022 23:33

No Google or internet. So going on holiday or visiting somewhere was a surprise- you only had the brochures to go by. No trip advisor reviews !

No mobiles or sat navs. If you wanted to find somewhere you had to use an atlas or A-Z. You couldn’t ring someone either if you were meeting them somewhere- you had to hope they’d be there !

Buying a house for 70k.

No BBC Iplayer or ITV Hub- So you had to wait a week until the next episode came on.

Waiting for the 6pm news every evening.

Writing actual letters to people- family/ friends, penpals etc.

The Christmas’s of the late 80s to the mid 90s were really special to me. ( Like 1989-1994). They just seemed better back then, obviously depends on your age.

Sparklingbrook · 05/11/2022 23:33

The joy of a vinyl single with an unexpectedly brilliant B side.

TrashyPanda · 05/11/2022 23:35

walking along the railway track, balancing on the rail and pretending to be on a tightrope

(I’d never thought of playing on the railway line until one day my mum said “now don’t play on the railway line” and I realised what a brilliant idea that was.

steam trains - waving to the driver and being really excited if he waved back.

wedding “scrambles” and the excitement of getting a few coins.

sagalooshoe · 05/11/2022 23:37

swimming in a really rough sea with towering waves for fun, cliff top clambering for fun. There's no way my child is ever going to be doing this!

MintJulia · 05/11/2022 23:39

Riding a motorbike as a teen. I loved it. Total freedom.

Now as a mum, I'll do anything to ensure ds does not do the same.

And yes, I know I am a total hypocrite 😟

Kite22 · 05/11/2022 23:41

Getting letters through the post, for no particular reason, other than someone was thinking of you.

The wonderful taste of Cadburys chocolate before it was ruined.

bozzabollix · 05/11/2022 23:43

The freedom to call on mates and go wandering. I used to love that, but stranger danger fear has all but killed that where I live. Umpteen clubs have replaced it but what a woeful replacement.

SudocremOnEverything · 05/11/2022 23:44

I didn’t really enjoy it, but it was a feature of my childhood: getting up too early at the weekend and having to live with the rest card until the kids’ tv started.

plasticmoses · 05/11/2022 23:45

Crafting Christmas lists soooo carefully from the Argos catalogue, using paper, scissors, and pritt stick. My daughter created hers this year using Canva on an iPad.

Being treated to a 99p single from Woolworth's on really special occasions.

Findus crispy pancakes.

A Chinese once every 6 months (eating in) being a hugely exotic special treat.

My nana saving all her 5p coins and giving them to me to spend on treats. Can't remember the last time I had a 5p coin!

nothingmuchaboutjerry · 05/11/2022 23:46

Climbing trees. Making dens. Constructing karts with old pram wheels then almost killing ourselves whilst riding them. And snow! It doesn't snow like it used to. We used to sledge on what we called "devils drop" (sounds scary doesn't it), and if you didn't stop in time you'd end up in the "blue lagoon", which was basically a smelly pond and if you fell in, you got a clip from your mam.

DrGlenda · 05/11/2022 23:46

Having lots of cousins and doing big family gatherings, they’ll only ever have 2 and they live hundreds of miles away so they may never be close.

Blind Date (the original) and Stars in Your Eyes on a Saturday night. Saturday night TV is shocking now.

The excitement of finishing for the day at secondary and rushing home to jump on MSN messenger (and hoping nobody needed to use the phone) so you could talk to your friends again and update your name to match your mood. 😂
