New employer making me take bank holidays out of my holiday

As a result I only have 14 days to take for the entire year. I have kids and it’s going to be ridiculously hard to cover holidays. Never ever had this at another employer.

is this commonplace?

The BH’s are usually taken out of your leave before you get your leave. I’d be speaking to HR.
Check in your contract how much leave you are entitled to.

I’d part time and working lots of BH’s you will lose out.

It should state in your contract what your leave entitlement is, including whether Bank Holidays are extra.

Check that first to see if that doesn't help.

Yes I’m part time. Seems so unfair. I’ll literally have to take some unpaid time to cover a bit more time off. I’ve had so many jobs over my life and never encountered this. It’s so demoralising.

In the UK an employer can include bank holidays as part of statutory annual leave.

Usually they are deducted before you get your remaining days.

As you have started in November, could it have been pro rata’d, so that that is what you get before the holiday entitlement renews again?

Legal entitlement is 20 days plus 8 bank holidays for people who work full time. If you're part time it will be pro-rata. Check Acas or Citizens Advice websites.

It depends on what your contract says. Our contracts give x amount of leave but that includes bank holidays. So for example, 30 days of leave but that includes the bank holidays for Xmas and new year.

Yes I do work Mondays.

So now ever many Monday BH’s there are, you lose those days to start with.
Then see what other days you work, and if there are BH’s on those, look at Xmas/New Year, as you’ll lose those too.

I work full time but bank holidays have always been taken out of my leave. For example, my
Employer gives 28 days but is closed all bank holidays so I have to use 8 days of my leave for bank holiday days and the remaining 20 I can book myself.

Yes I lose the ones over Xmas too. It’s fucking shit. HR woman was saying ‘you still have the same amount of holiday’ and I was actually welling you thinking yeah but only if I’m happy that 1/3 of my leave is on random mondays dotted throughout the year! I need to take weeks off in the school holidays so I can be there for my kids! Bank hold are useless!

@ClearButtons because I’m part time it works out I have 20 days holiday, but the BHs come out of that. Leaving me with bugger all.

How many days leave do you get of your weee full time abd how many days do you work per week?

Yes, I would think that’s normal -but it depends what you mean by “holiday entitlement”. Holiday entitlement may include bank holidays, or in some companies the contract may say “x days’ leave, plus bank holidays days”. I have only ever known the former -you get a block of hours/days and bank holidays are included in that.
