Apple Watch - AIBU to not make a decision?!

Blaise19 · 03/11/2022 13:33

I've been reading up on Apple watches for ages (all my other personal electronics are Apple). I just can't decide if they are worth it, or if my iPhone is sufficient. The particular aspects that draw me to the watch are the health monitoring, the falls alert and the new crash detection feature. Should I, or shouldn't I? Do you love yours? Regret yours? Really want one?

Thanks in advance.

very interested in answers for this . thinking of getting my son one he's a teacher so i was thinking he could see texts etc while working

WaddleAway · 03/11/2022 13:34

Mine is sat in a drawer. Didn’t bring anything to my life.

Probably shouldn’t be reading texts while he’s working, should he? It’ll be a distraction

Just saw an article recommending this item today

That's a no! Smart watches are banned for the kids in our school ,why should the teacher have one? DH is a teacher and has a basic Fitbit that doesn't give text alerts.

I got annoyed with mine, I have enough contact points without needing my wrist buzzing too.

UnionGlassCloth · 03/11/2022 13:43

I had the first one, found charging it daily a pita. I use a Fitbit charge 3 which needs charging once a week at the most.

I think I would find the music availability useful when swimming instead of leaving my phone and specs poolside, but thats all I can think of tbh.

HelterSkelter224 · 03/11/2022 13:44

I like mine for the health tracking and it really did help me stay motivated but I have turned off ALL notifications to stop me getting text / email alerts etc otherwise I'd get nothing done!

Ekátn · 03/11/2022 13:44

I have been actually thinking the same. I got dd one in July for her 18th. It’s really motivated her to be more active.

She has started Uni and walks everywhere, where she didn’t when she was at home. She also like that she can view texts and messages when her phone is in her bag.

I have to be honest, she says she uses a lot of the features on it. But I have no idea what features she uses. I will ask and see what she says.

I love mine, apple pay without having to get your phone out or even have it with you, exercise and health tracking, I use the timer on it all the time when cooking, controlling audio through my airpods, taking phone calls when I've left my phone in another part of the house or at work (it only ever seems to ring when I've left my phone on my desk to go and make a cuppa), reading messages discreetly in meetings. Best of all being able to ping my phone to find whereabouts in the house I've left it.

HumourReplacementTherapy · 03/11/2022 13:46

I wouldn't be without mine but I have type 1 diabetes and get my blood glucose readings directly on the watch face, so I use it all the time to see at a glance where I'm heading!

Most used 2nd feature is the ability to pay using it. Flick of the wrist, no scrambling for phone.

I do check my heart rate and use the ecg feature occasion
It's great for finding my phone when I forget where I've left it
If you're active it's great for recording exercise.

fallfallfall · 03/11/2022 13:47

Love mine, my fitness and weight would be dismal without it. I enjoy how my apps all work together.
huge fan.

Unexpectedbaby · 03/11/2022 13:48

I have a series 3, didn't feel the need to pay more for advancements, however if and when this one died I would get a new one and upgrade without doubt.

Love mine

Aposterhasnoname · 03/11/2022 14:04

Use mine for the health tracking, controlling music, and checking notifications etc. Also use the Walkie talkie function with DH, a lot, and the remote control for the camera is useful in my job.

Blaise19 · 03/11/2022 18:00

Thanks everyone. What do you all think about the falls notification and crash element? (I'm in my sixties, live alone, drive a lot and am often in quiet, remote spots with my dog.)

My DH loves his, he got it after being very impressed with the heart monitoring for some of his patients (he's a cardiologist) and now does recommend it for some patients.
He says it's a bit gimmicky but he likes it a lot.

I'd rather my kids weren't taught by someone who's reading his texts during lessons!

Hugasauras · 03/11/2022 19:55

I love mine. I find it really handy for reading and checking notifications and paying for stuff without digging my phone out of bag or finding where I've left it in the house and the fitness stuff is good. I also like the sleep tracking and the customisable watch faces and really handy for checking time in night without fumbling around for phone.

Hugasauras · 03/11/2022 19:56

And I can't speak to the falls or crash detection as luckily I haven't had to use either, but I believe they work well as you would expect from an Apple device.

EspeciallyD · 03/11/2022 20:17

My fall detection activated earlier when I was wrestling my arm into the armhole of a tight swimsuit earlier. It alarmed, asked me if I was ok, I pressed yes and then it asked if I had actually fallen, so I said no. It's never happened before, but the software did a big update last week and there have been lots of tweaks.

Novemberhater · 03/11/2022 20:22

I had a nasty fall and my Apple Watch knew straight away. I managed to get up with broken ribs, but if it had been worse the watch would have been a real help.

RamsayBoltonsConscience · 03/11/2022 20:30

I love mine and wear it all the time. It offers extra piece of mind when I'm out running as I know that I would be able to use it to call for help should I need it (for whatever reason.) I use the health tracker and look every morning at the sleep tracker to see if I have been awake as much as I think I have (I'm menopausal and sleep can be difficult!) I use it to pay almost all the time - you don't have to worry about carrying your purse or cards as long as you have your phone with you. I'm on my second one as I upgraded after three years with my old one.

GooseberryCinnamonYogurt · 03/11/2022 20:37

Love mine! I use it to pay for everything, monitor how much daily exercise I take, love the fall alert as I live alone, can change tracks when playing music without needing to go back to speaker, adjusts the volume too, soo many things I use it for.

Polkadotties · 03/11/2022 20:39

Love mine. I’m now on my second.

TheFarawayNearby · 03/11/2022 20:40

I think I might like one, but will it cost more to use it as a phone? I find the whole thing really confusing.
