Apple Watch - AIBU to not make a decision?!

Blaise19 · 03/11/2022 13:33

I've been reading up on Apple watches for ages (all my other personal electronics are Apple). I just can't decide if they are worth it, or if my iPhone is sufficient. The particular aspects that draw me to the watch are the health monitoring, the falls alert and the new crash detection feature. Should I, or shouldn't I? Do you love yours? Regret yours? Really want one?

Thanks in advance.

I decided I no longer want a phone on my wrist, too distracting.
Have a Fitbit with all the extra nonsense uninstalled.
I just want to know the time, my steps and active mins anything like sleep or so, can be checked on the app.
No calls, texts or that kind of stuff.

very interested in answers for this . thinking of getting my son one he's a teacher so i was thinking he could see texts etc while working

Why would this be a good thing? It would be massively distracting.

My cardiologist recommended getting one so I’ve recently bought a series 8. I don’t know how everything works yet but can do an ECG and track Atrial Fibrillation.

From your update- potentially for the falls notification only it would potentially give you more peace of mind- I can't say I use many of the features on mine and probably wouldn't be rushing out to buy another one when this one dies.

Love mine! Have had one for years and this week got a new one. I use it for all sorts…I love the fitness aspect, plus I have a (mild) issue with my heart so the heart rate monitor is really useful, as is the fall detection. And the timer!

MatthewPatthew · 03/11/2022 22:20

Can you wear it in the shower/bath/swimming or do you have to take it off?

EspeciallyD · 03/11/2022 22:40

It's waterproof, I swim in mine, it counts laps

EspeciallyD · 03/11/2022 22:41

lengths I mean

Thank you!

I love mine. I bought shortly after I spunked out on two "proper" watches and I just couldn't go back to them.

I love the way you customise it to exactly what you want. Dial, notifications, strap, everything. Whatever your Apple Watch looks/functions like is not the same as the next person's.

CatherinedeBourgh · 03/11/2022 22:56

Mine sits in a drawer, I never ever use it. Regret the purchase tbh.

can i buy it?

Emmalou0607 · 03/11/2022 23:01

Sold mine after 2 months and got a Garmin. If it's the health side they are so much better.

1224boom · 03/11/2022 23:08

I love mine and have done 10,000 steps each day since I have got it as it's so motivating.

gonutkin · 03/11/2022 23:11

I absolutely love mine. Not very active so I don't use it much for the exercise side of it but well worth having

Blaise19 · 04/11/2022 07:38

Thanks everyone - so helpful :-)

It depends on your needs, but the fall detection is a pro. I didn’t enjoy having one years ago but they were slow and cumbersome. They seem to have come a long way though, and I now have a newer one I enjoy. I personally use it for notifications on the go, controlling music and taking pictures from a distance . The battery isn’t great, I don’t wear it overnight, but I get a day and a half out of it that way.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 04/11/2022 08:02

I wouldn't be without mine now. Main functions are the fitness monitoring and using Apple Pay. I have different straps for it to coordinate with different outfits or seasons.

I use it a lot to control smart lights in our house or a quick glance at an incoming text message to see if it's important. I don't have it synced to WhatsApp though - too distracting if there's an explosion of chat on a group.

Timers and reminders are useful too.

Apple do regular 'skills' sessions at their branches for anyone who wants to learn how to use their gadgets. I went to one last week and found it very useful. The staff were incredibly helpful and informative.

FriBoo · 11/11/2022 09:37

I think it's really useful and recommend it.

Houseplantmad · 11/11/2022 09:48

@cheekaa thanks, I didn’t know this. Will looks into it.

ghostsandpumpkinsalready · 11/11/2022 09:57

I've had one for years and to be honest I loved it at first but now it's just a watch to me.I turned off all notifications to it because they became annoying.

taliaG · 11/11/2022 10:45

I love mine. I often don't hear my phone ringing or leave it somewhere around the house, so I love that calls come through to my watch and I never miss them. I also like getting texts so I can quickly and discreetly check urgent messages while, yes! Teaching! Without having to get my phone out.

We have Alexa devices at home so the doorbell and any reminders I've set come through there too.

I don't know about the detecting falls feature as never used. I did think how it would work if I'd had an accident and couldn't get to my phone - you could call 999 or a relative from the watch.

Karatema · 11/11/2022 10:55

My DH had just bought me an SE to replace my struggling Series 1. I wouldn't be without mine. I had decades without a watch because they wouldn't work on my wrist; usually stopped after a few days and refused to restart until someone else wore it!
I love all the different faces available plus knowing when I've been sat down too long!

ShiningStarQueen · 11/11/2022 11:08

I really love mine. However, it’s doing the typical Apple thing of getting to the 2 year mark and not holding the battery. Whereas when I first got it, the battery would still be 30% charged at bedtime, the watch is now normally dead by 6pm. With a phone it’s not the end of the world as you can just plug it in an use it sat on the sofa but you can’t do it with a watch. Whilst I like it, I probably won’t replace it. My husband and my mum are both having exactly the same problem so it’s not just mine.
