I’ve given up trying to sleep

…and gone downstairs for a cup of peppermint tea.

There is one hell of a storm going on out there. The wind is whistling and buffeting the house. I can hear tiles smashing and garden chairs blowing around. The electricity keeps going off and on again.

I tried listening to a sleep story on the Calm app but couldn’t hear it over the noise of the storm. I’ve thrown in the towel now and put on the kettle and sought out the cat. I thought it might be quieter downstairs, and I might be able to snooze on the sofa, but the fireplace is funnelling the wind and the cat is ignoring me.

Anyone else awake? Talk to me.

Same here. I desperately need sleep but can’t relax enough to nod off.
Went downstairs to let the cat in, he usually stays out all night but shot in the door and is very cross about the weather!

Sunbird24 · 01/11/2022 02:09

Very windy here too - not got curtains up in my new house yet as I only moved in yesterday so lying on a mattress on my bedroom floor listening to it. Would go downstairs to make a drink but don’t know where my dressing gown and slippers are either!

5yearplan · 01/11/2022 02:10

Yep it woke me up and I can’t get back to sleep now. It’s bin day so there’s a lot rattling around out there.

I just heard my bin go over too. At least it was emptied yesterday.

Tell us about your new house! How exciting!

Same here. Wide awake listening to things rattle around outside. Wondering what will be in my garden in the morning. It was sunny today and it’s half term here so we were out in the garden playing. Be there’s loads of plastic tat out there I didn’t bring in in the rush to get ready for Halloween.

Also my DD pulled out her temporary filling on a chew bar so I’m stressing about that. She knows she’s not allowed them for this reason

Hebditch · 01/11/2022 02:18

Whereabouts are you, @VenusClapTrap ? I’m in Hampshire and it sounds like 1987 out there! Have to be up at 5am for work...

YukoandHiro · 01/11/2022 02:19

The storm woke me here too. The bathroom window is broken and won't close and it's making the whole floor chilly and whistly.
Particularly annoying because I really needed a good long night's sleep tonight. I haven't slept well in weeks.

I seem to have got into a pattern of falling asleep easily between 10 and 11 but waking around 1.30/2 and being stuck awake til 4, then bone tired when I have to get up at 6,30. Is this a perimenopause thing? I'm only 40

VenusClapTrap · 01/11/2022 02:19

5am? Oh no. Good luck. I’m in Sussex.

OP posts:
VenusClapTrap · 01/11/2022 02:21

Yuko that does sound like perimenopause to be honest. I’m often awake at that time even when it isn’t blowing a hooly.

Hi @Sunbird24 - good to see you here! I can't find my dressing gown either lol! And the broken window is one of the many immediate issues that need fixing in our new house

spiderontheceiling · 01/11/2022 02:24

I came to bed early as I was really tired, got woken by a DC and by that time the wind and rain had got up and now I cannot get back to sleep. DH has started snoring which isn't helping as not only do I have to listen to it but it just emphasises that he's fast asleep next to me.
I think I'm now going to do as you've done, OP, and go and have a hot drink and see if that helps.
I am so annoyed!

ImHavingAnOldFriendForDinner · 01/11/2022 02:26

It seems to be finished here now but it's woken me up and I'm wide awake and thanks to PMT really hungry!

Sunbird24 · 01/11/2022 02:27

@YukoandHiro im in the same sort of pattern and nearly 45. Would prefer it not to be peri but suspect it might be.

@VenusClapTrap i moved from a semi to a detached due to awful noisy neighbours, but the whole thing has been really stressful as we only completed at 4.30 on Friday. That meant my movers couldn’t deliver all my stuff until yesterday and I had to go and stay with a friend for the weekend with nothing but what I was wearing at the time. I still haven’t found my bank cards, but I’ve found the thermostat and one of the bedroom curtain pole finials from my old house which I’ll need to take back… 🤦‍♀️ Now got the most enormous cold sore! My new house will be lovely once it’s got carpets and curtains though, it has amazing open field views out the front.

Rosebud21 · 01/11/2022 02:30

I'm on holiday. I was awake anyway and am enjoyed listening to the early morning call to prayer from the Mosque of Omar in Bethlehem, a local cockerel and dog have joined in. It's my first full day here, it's slightly surreal

saltnvinegarpringles · 01/11/2022 02:30

It was crazy windy in Bristol, woke me up and can't get back off now. I didn't realise how windy it was going to be so we left the halloween decorations outside - they'll have flown halfway to bloody Wales by now!

VenusClapTrap · 01/11/2022 02:31

That sounds like a lovely view Sunbird. Moving is so stressful. I don’t think I ever want to do it again! We had a similar situation to you with all our worldly goods sitting in removal lorries for days, due to the vendors being a total pain and changing completion day at the last minute.

VenusClapTrap · 01/11/2022 02:32

Oh wow @Rosebud21 , that sounds amazing. Are you going sightseeing today?

Me, I'm wide awake Confused

DS is back from Uni for his reading week. Walked out of the house at 11pm announcing he had some mates who were out. Didn't reply when I asked where he was off to, so I'm left guessing if he's driven 45 minutes to the nearest decent club or he's a couple of miles away in a mates house.

His course doesn't really have reading week, so he's come home but is driving back a couple of times this week to attend a lecture - tomorrows one involves leaving home at 8am (5.5 hours time) which isn't promising. So either he's skipping it, or is intending on driving for an hour half asleep. Neither I'm impressed with.

In the meantime I can't sleep. The weather is horrendous and I don't know if he's in a ditch somewhere. It's so much easier when he's at Uni - I have no idea what he's upto there but it never involves a car..

VenusClapTrap · 01/11/2022 02:35

I didn’t realise either, @saltnvinegarpringles. There is now pumpkin splattered all over the patio as it was sitting on a garden chair, which has gone over.

I just went outside and moved some plant pots to safety. Can’t have my Auriculas getting smashed. They’re in tiny terracotta pots so rather vulnerable.

AllotmentTime · 01/11/2022 02:37

The storm, DH, the cat, and DD have conspired to completely rob me of sleep. My alarm will go off in under 4 hours. Joy.

I’m sympathetic to DH and DD who both had valid reasons for being awake. Less so the bloody cat. DH is now snoring next to me and I suspect (hope!!!) DD is asleep too, though she may not be.

I’m going to be so wrecked tomorrow 😫😫 and now the storm is finishing off the job with an extra surge of wind. Great.

VenusClapTrap · 01/11/2022 02:38

Oh dear, @familyissues12345 . That would keep me awake too. I’m dreading mine flying the nest and doing stuff like that So much to worry about.

All quiet here in Scotland, but I am up with pain from a tooth extracted on Thursday.

I am up to the limit with Ibruprofen and some co-codamil 30/500 I found, it is weird as ok if I am standing /walking around so it didnt feel too bad today. but now as soon as I sit for too long it gets painful and it is agony if I lie down.

So tired and need to sleep, but looks like I am (standing) up for the night. 😩

VenusClapTrap · 01/11/2022 02:40

Cats just aren’t helpful, are they? Mine likes to bother me at night too. But right now when I could do with some company she’s snoring contentedly on the sofa. 🙄

saltnvinegarpringles · 01/11/2022 02:40

I keep thinking the wind is dying down and then there's a fresh gust. Awful.

familyissues12345 will he not text you? I'm Latina and woe betide any child who didn't let their parents know they were safe however old they are. I still have to do it and I'm 33 😅
