Does anyone have a good vegetarian Christmas main/ centrepiece recipe?

I wasn't sure where to post… I’m not a great cook, but need a (foolproof?) tasty alternative to turkey for Christmas (that isn't a nut roast…)

Does anyone have one?

We've had this a couple of years and really enjoyed it!

We've given up (veggie family) and just have veg, stuffing, roasties and then do cauliflower cheese and Yorkshire pudding! Failing that buy something ready made in pastry from M and S or Waitrose!

This Butternut squash stuffed with leeks and blue cheese. Really easy and can be prepped ahead of time. I throw in some cranberries for extra festiveness! I can't serve nuts so that rules out a lot of the usual veggie Christmas mains, plus I don't really like to serve pastry because I just find it too heavy with all the sides, which rules out even more!

StillWeRise · 30/10/2022 20:26

its difficult isn't it- we have a nut allergy plus aversion to blue cheese, beetroot, and to mushrooms- there really isn't much left, especially if you dont want pastry either

Same. I prefer having extra of the usual stuff.

The Bosh mushroom wellington is delicious.

I've made a pie in previous years with roast Red onion, Red pepper and courgette, Red pesto and goats cheese.

I've also made this wreath which was very easy:

I have one veggie son, tried lots of things but he prefers the quorn roast which is only about £3.50. Because there's only him eats it there is enough left over for the cold boxing day buffet......... But give me turkey, homemade stuffing on petit pain anyday😋

Get yourself a mcsweens veggie haggis, lovely!

lightlypoachedeyeballs · 30/10/2022 20:39

I've just done this and the veggies loved it

We sometimes have mushroom crumble, it doubles as a side for meat eaters.

Or a Portobello mushroom with a layer of stilton on top, then stuffing on top of that and baked.

I know you said not nut roast but this one is genuinely delicious and looks fun with the cabbage leaves around it amp.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/wordofmouth/2011/dec/15/how-cook-perfect-nut-roast

That sounds delicious! The meat is my least favourite part.

MissMarpleMuses · 31/10/2022 05:08

Definitely vegetarian haggis!

ThroughTheForestUpTheHill · 31/10/2022 07:50

I've used this recipe for years and years. Occasionally I've tried other recipes, or something shop bought but nothing compares. I omit the nutmeg, use any kind of oil, and bake in a loaf tin. Its also great eaten with pickles etc on boxing day. We moved house this year and there are hundreds of sweet chestnut trees on our doorstep so it's now super cheap to make. Chestnuts are already cooked and frozen 😋 It is utterly delicious...

My Dd is a vegetarian and asks for just everything but the meat. I do make sure that the roasties are veggie and there is veggie stuffing, gravy and "pigs" in blankets.

BringOnAutumn · 31/10/2022 17:01

Thank you so much! I will look through these

I agree this is delicious, and it was hit with the meat eaters too. I’ve also enjoyed this Mushroom Cobbler, which has become a winter favourite.

BestIsWest · 31/10/2022 17:10

I was just coming on to mention Delia’s cheese and Parsnip Roulade but see I’ve been beaten to it!

tonystarksrighthand · 31/10/2022 17:12

Always a hit in our house

I've done this dish a few times - it's a great main for veggie and doubles as a side dish for the meat eaters. It's well worth the effort. I'm not a lover of meaty style substitutes.

I’ve been vegetarian for decades. My favourite Christmas dinner consists of cauliflower, broccoli, peas, carrots, cabbage, sprouts, stuffing, bread sauce, parsnips, roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, and a lake of gravy.

No need for a centrepiece, there would be no room on the plate anyway.
