Why are people wearing puffa coats today?

I'm in London. It's sunny and 21degrees, my car says so! I'm wearing a thin, long sleeved top. Virtually everyone I've seen is wrapped up in thick coats, scarfs and hats! Why?! If it was 21 degrees in July, you wouldn't dress like that. I really think people just decide, well it's October, I must wear a coat rather than making that decision based on the actual weather... don't you think?

Maybe it was cold when they left home early this morning?

Citycentre3 · 27/10/2022 16:33

Yes it annoys me too. They are like this in the continent where fashion is defined by the season regardless of the weather. I always check the forecast before stepping out the door.

The low was about 11 degrees so it wasn't that cold this morning.

Doublevodka · 27/10/2022 16:36

It’s October…I’m wearing my puffa coat 😊

Nopeforme · 27/10/2022 16:37

My hoise was freezing this morning so I wore a coat out. I regret that at this point in time, but when I'm heading home from Central London at 8pm tonight I'll be grateful for the coat. If I had to walk anywhere right now, I'd probably stick my coat on because it's easier than carrying it and juggling bags.

CarPoor · 27/10/2022 16:41

Because its October?

Yes it maybe 21 degrees now but it's likely to be cold in the mornings and evenings or perhaps rain so they bring a coat. Or they didn't check the weather forecast and just assumed. Or they were cold yesterday.

Who gives a fuck?

MissAtomicBomb1 · 27/10/2022 16:42

I think some people are in winter mode now regardless of the actual weather.
18 degrees here today at a pumpkin picking place. Most were in puffas, jumpers and bobble hats!

freyamay74 · 27/10/2022 16:44

So... you're in your car in mid afternoon. Can you not get your head round the fact that some people may have been up and out early when it wasn't 21 degrees? Hmm
If they weren't wearing their coat they'd have to lug it round anyway, perhaps with work bags etc. is it really so hard to understand that the temperature isn't the same all day?

Yes exactly!

Because some people aren't in cars, they're walking or using public transport. They maybe left the house early morning and it's easier to wear a coat than it is to carry it.

Comedycook · 27/10/2022 16:50

I do. I hate winter. These lovely mild temperatures are helping me believe it's still summer. These people are ruining the illusion for me.

I took the dog out earlier, it seemed a bit sharp so stuck my coat on, not a puffa but wintery... after 10 minutes really wished I hadn't and took it off and carried it the rest of the way. Really can't believe how mild it is still.

GuyMontag · 27/10/2022 16:52

We're in the northern hemisphere 7 weeks away from winter solstice. At this time of year it's significantly colder and darker nine hours before 16:00 (ie around about the time many of those coat-wearing fools you see left for work) and three hours after it (ie around the time many of them return home.)

Hence people wear coats.

Madagascary · 27/10/2022 16:54

So agree, London yesterday people in winter coats boots and woolly hats it was about 18°

Livedandlearned · 27/10/2022 16:54

This morning at 6:30 when I left the house it was pissing down and cold. I should have popped back on my lunch break to change into something that you approve of, sorry!

RedWingBoots · 27/10/2022 16:33

There was literally no need for the amount of hats

Yes... people are properly wrapped up like it's freezing. I don't just mean a jacket but full on hats, scarfs and the whole shebang. It's bizarre. I think some weirdos people seem to love winter and are keen to embrace it before it's started.

We cancelled a trip to London today because of the rain this morning (from Essex). It was bright and sunny by mid morning.

I can see why people had coats today.

CarPoor · 27/10/2022 17:05

People in London can be coming from all over the shot though, they may have left their house at 5am. It seems a sensible approach to take a coat and hat at the end of October for a long day trip even if you don't really need it.

The weather forecast is often wrong and cannot be trusted to determine what outerwear one should take on a long day trip

Madagascary · 27/10/2022 17:05

And the TUBE was so hot. Yet. The coats

Minniem2020 · 27/10/2022 17:09

Because I couldn't be bothered to go upstairs to get a different one by the time I'd wrestled 2 kids ready for a walk.

latetothefisting · 27/10/2022 17:18

I have found since reading the recent spate of energy threads that a lot of people seem to feel the cold a lot more than me!

I'm still going out for walks in a t shirt, haven't put the heating on yet because haven't felt the need to.

The people saying perhaps it was cold when they left the house this morning -makes sense but then why are they still wearing the coats? They're not a commitment signed in blood, you can take them off if you get hot! I find being too warm really unpleasant and wouldn't be able to bear wandering around hot and sweaty so would have to take the coat off and carry it/tie around waist or whatever.

Therefor can only assume they are wearing the coats because they feel cold!

Chesneyhawkes1 · 27/10/2022 17:21

When I left for work at 3.30am it was a bit cold. So I wore my coat. Plus I'm a wimp

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 27/10/2022 17:22

@Comedycook you'd absolutely hate it here in Liverpool. I'm constantly raging* about how the second clouds cover the sun, coats, hats and scarves come out. Regardless of the actual temperature. It honestly could be August and if it rains there's someone out in all their winter gear.

*Not really but it does irk me!

Alighttouchonthetiller · 27/10/2022 17:25

Poor souls must be feeling chilly.

I am back in my summer clothes and had a right moan this morning when out with the dog - it was too warm for a raincoat yet was hammering it down.
