Why are people wearing puffa coats today?

I'm in London. It's sunny and 21degrees, my car says so! I'm wearing a thin, long sleeved top. Virtually everyone I've seen is wrapped up in thick coats, scarfs and hats! Why?! If it was 21 degrees in July, you wouldn't dress like that. I really think people just decide, well it's October, I must wear a coat rather than making that decision based on the actual weather... don't you think?

Its boiling I just walked to get son in a t-shirt lol

NotQuiteUsual · 27/10/2022 17:28

It's a very mild October. I honestly have no idea how to dress right now. The breeze has a real chill that's too much for a cardigan to handle, but not enough to wear a coat without cooking.

liveforsummer · 27/10/2022 17:30

The low was about 11 degrees so it wasn't that cold this morning.

11c is definitely big coat weather to me. Agree I was warm later today but it was cold when I got up and dressed

liveforsummer · 27/10/2022 17:32

I do. I hate winter. These lovely mild temperatures are helping me believe it's still summer. These people are ruining the illusion for me.

Fellow winter hater. I'm not able to do that unfortunately. It might be warm but it's grey and damp and brown. The only cold I like is snow but we hardly ever get that

Im in london, it doesnt feel like the same 21c that it feels in July, there is more of a chill to it and also mornings and late afternoons feel chillier.its not a summer feel no matter how it gets sugar coated.

I had a sodding puffa coat.all day yesterday. I set off early for a day out in a big city (not London) it never occurred to me that a t-shirt and a fairly light jacket would be too much for the last week in October! I took the puffa because it's light if I need to carry it.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 27/10/2022 18:24

It was raining this morning very badly. Why do u care?

dudsville · 27/10/2022 18:32

I have a Canadian colleague who comments on people dressing too warmly for the weather. I found it weirdly, mildly, shaming. You're essentially saying "what an idiot, didn't you check the forecast, do you really think it's cold?". I leave home at 6.30am and take public transport. The weather and temp are often quite different several hours later, and why do you care what I'm wearing? Having said that, i think this warm phase may have caught some people off guard too. I was wearing a jumper in the house all day, stepped outside to speak with my neighbour who was appropriately dressed in shorts and a tee shirt, but my jumper was equally inoffensive.

Pickingmyselfup · 27/10/2022 18:34

This time of year is difficult to judge. I left the house at 8.30 wearing a fleecy superdry coat because it was raining and a bit chilly. I packed gloves because I was driving to drop the kids off then walking to work in the rain and thought my hands could get chilly. I was too hot really so took the gloves off but left the coat on because I wasn't that hot.

When I left work I made a detour home to take off the wellies and change my coat for a non fleecy one but had I not been able to I would have walked back to get the kids looking a bit OTT in the nice sunshine but this morning was so miserable.

I won't be the only one in this position, plus some people (like me) feel the cold easily.

irrrannuu · 27/10/2022 18:38

What If the left the house early in the morning or they're going out later and they need a coat as it'll be chillier. They might feel the cold more than you!

LionsandLambs · 27/10/2022 18:41

It was hot in London yesterday. I took my jumper off and walked past others wearing scarfs and hats!

LeoEisor · 27/10/2022 18:41

I made the mistake of wearing a coat and was sweating! I think it's very warm today not coat weather in my opinion but some feel the cold more then others I suppose

imnottoofussed · 27/10/2022 18:59

Wondering why and how it affects anyone except the coat wearer. Raging and annoyed about what other people are wearing is a bit baffling.

randomsabreuse · 27/10/2022 19:11

I'm in Scotland where at the moment it's warm but occasionally VERY wet with little warning (other than it being school run time so more or less guaranteeing the worst weather of the day). So a waterproof top layer is non negotiable!

I've got a bad habit of dressing for yesterday's weather and regretting my choice rather than checking several forecasts. So if I'm too hot one day the next I'll wear something less warm even if the forecast is for it to be colder. Oops!

BogRollBOGOF · 27/10/2022 19:31

I tend to go for a coat I can tie around my waist at this point of the year and even if I need sleeves, it's not often Big Coat weather yet.

It was pleasantly t-shirt weather this afternoon (but not 21⁰C here) and I wouldn't have kept a coat on as a mobile mini-sauna.

I can struggle that my body warms up quickly when moving but cool off rapidly if too still. But getting sweaty from excess layers makes the cooling even worse. There's been a lot of awkward humidity this year that's just been on that cusp of too warm/ too cool depending on if you're moving/ still.

WonderingWanda · 27/10/2022 19:54

Because they didn't really think it through like me. I looked out the window and saw drizzle and autumn leaves so thought it would be cold. It was too hot for my puffa and the long sleeve top I had on but I had shopping to carry so had to get on with it!

Yes it annoys me too. They are like this in the continent where fashion is defined by the season regardless of the weather. I always check the forecast before stepping out the door.

I'm in the Med where it's 28c and the locals are wrapped up in puffa jackets and fleeces already. I'm just back from a glorious swim in the warm sea and my neighbour was horrified 'You sweem today??!!' 😅

ZooTropia · 28/10/2022 15:42

It's called Fashion dahling

Divebar2021 · 28/10/2022 15:47

Even if it was raining why would you put a puffa coat / woolly hat on? I commute into central London and find I often don’t need much more than a blazer on at the moment because the train is hot. Even a mac has been too hot once I’ve pegged it to the train station. It takes 10 seconds to check the weather app but hey as long as I’m not carrying someone else coats around it doesn’t really impact me.

AriettyHomily · 28/10/2022 15:49

Thought the same today, I'm in flip flops and there's people out in puffas and woolly hats, admittedly I'm peri but still it's hot outside, and it was warm this morning
