Why do people hate rich/ thin people

I’m all for equality and body positivity but recently I’ve noticed in my circle that people seem to really really hate rich people and people who are thin/ actively dieting? I want to dismiss it as jealousy but surely it can’t be that simple?

Of course it can be that simple.

EndlessMagpies · 26/10/2022 20:44

Difficult one, I wouldn't like to suggest that perhaps it is down to the sort of people you socialise with. Sorry about that!!

Anamechangeisasgoodasarest · 26/10/2022 20:46

I am "people".

I don't hate rich/thin people.

Maybe you need to reconsider your choice of friends.

Malfi · 26/10/2022 20:46

Rich and thin are separate things. And thin is also separate from actively dieting.

susan12345678 · 26/10/2022 20:46

I’ve been wondering about this recently too, it does seem to happen.

hamstersarse · 26/10/2022 20:48

Thin people are a minority now

Rich people are also a minority

it’s just the way it goes

UWhatNow · 26/10/2022 20:50

I actually know someone who is rich and thin and I am sooo jealous (and I tell her) but I can’t hate her because she’s actually really lovely. Which is a bloody third thing to be jealous of…

Its not their fault - only hate them if they’re a rich, thin AND a dick.

Nosleepforthismum · 26/10/2022 20:54

Wait until they encounter rich, thin and lovely! It’s good old fashioned jealousy.

ComtesseDeSpair · 26/10/2022 20:55

Most people want to be rich, most people would prefer to be slim than overweight. Both things take effort, albeit of different kinds. Some people who struggle with the effort and wish it could be easier become resentful at those who either seem to do it effortlessly, or have put effort in and not allowed themselves to be swayed.

NoNameNowAgain · 26/10/2022 20:56

I don’t think many people hate thin people, but they do like to think that they eat a lot. The thinner I was the more comments I got on my supposedly enormous appetite. I suppose it’s about the unfairness of life so yes, it’s jealousy.

QuicheQuoche · 26/10/2022 20:57

Was out with DH and his friends the other night.
Got introduced to one of their wives, I asked her questions (she asked me none) and I made an effort to be friendly.
She literally turned her back on me halfway through the conversation to talk to someone else and then was staring at me across the room for the rest of the evening.
I wanted to ask her what her fucking problem was.
She’s older than me and was overweight but I’d really, really hate to think she didn’t want to talk to me because I weigh less than her because that’s just mad.
I just genuinely don’t know what the issue was.

Birdy1066 · 26/10/2022 20:57

I sympathise. I hate all rich people and thin people. My therapist says it’s because I’m poor and fat.

Fuwari · 26/10/2022 20:58

I don't care about being thin but I would like to be rich!

I don't "hate" rich people as individuals but I do disagree with a world where people are paid thousands to kick a ball around or pose for some pictures. I wish we had a fairer world. And yes it grates seeing some people flaunt wealth while others are queuing at food banks. Or in some parts of the world literally starving. Especially when some of these rich people have not even earned the money themselves, thinking of certain famous offspring! It's not hate, it's sadness that things aren't a bit more balanced.

LtMoose · 26/10/2022 21:03

It's 100% jealousy

Malfi · 26/10/2022 21:20

Why would anyone be jealous of someone dieting? That’s nothing to be jealous -or is it envious? -about.

MinervaTerrathorn · 26/10/2022 21:25

They are separate things. There are also very few thin people, many who are thin (rather than a slim healthy weight) are unwell so I don't see why people would hate them.

Mojoj · 26/10/2022 21:27

Because they're jealous.

MrsTimRiggins · 26/10/2022 21:29

In your example, it’s jealousy

Advocat20 · 26/10/2022 21:41

People like those who are similar to them so if you’re neither rich nor thin then you might dislike rich, thin people.

Our society worships rich thin people so there’ll also be envy involved.

MinervaTerrathorn · 26/10/2022 21:42

Surely only people with an eating disorder would be jealous of thin/underweight people? It's not the 'heroin chic' days anymore.

DenholmElliot1 · 26/10/2022 21:44

Birdy1066 · 26/10/2022 20:57

I sympathise. I hate all rich people and thin people. My therapist says it’s because I’m poor and fat.

😂

crackofdoom · 26/10/2022 21:48

I'm not bothered about thin, but it's hard to justify the existence of the uber rich when there are so many people in poverty in the world. Especially when it appears so many of them acquired their money via distinctly dodgy methods.

Pinkypong · 26/10/2022 22:01

I’m jealous! I know a rich thin model. People actually open doors, offer to do extra for her because she is beautiful. She seems to walk through life being taken to islands, bought a flat, given amazing clothes, cars etc, earns a fortune and has rich parents in the right business. It’s quite hard when she assumes everyone lives like that, or if they don’t she doesn’t notice them. She is nice enough, but it’s not liked she’s had to put any effort in. So yes! We were obviously swapped at birth!

Pedallleur · 26/10/2022 22:01

Our society/media thrives on how rich/thin people are and how successful, happy they are except when they are not and how we should all be like that or aspire to. I don't mind rich but just be discreet about it. Weight? That's a whole other issue that we can talk about forever.

BirmaBrite · 26/10/2022 22:05

Rich as in an absolute fortune, never, ever have to worry about money ever again type of rich ? Like Euromillions big jackpot rich ?

Thin or slim ?, I remember someone with an eating disorder standing next to me looking in a full length mirror and telling me about their gross belly fat, whilst I loomed over them looking like Hagrids bigger and older Sister. I wasn't in the least bit jealous of them being thin, they were hospitalised a couple of days later. Lovely slim friend who runs a 10k like a gazelle without really thinking, madly jealous.
