What would you do - honest opinions

You're walking through town alone after dark - it's relatively well lit but not a particularly safe area - lots of low level crime, drinking etc.

You see a lone Asian man of around 30 being intimidated and verbally harassed by around 5 youths on bikes.

As a lone woman - would you intervene or would you walk past?

I'd retreat somewhere and call the police

BeanieTeen · 25/10/2022 21:07

Call the police - I wouldn’t put myself in danger.

autienotnaughty · 25/10/2022 21:07

That's hard. I'd keep walking and ring local police.

jeffbezoz · 25/10/2022 21:08

Maybe film it for evidence (if you're able to without getting caught) then call police. Then hide until the yobs have gone, and then ask if the guy is OK..

Beezknees · 25/10/2022 21:09

Honestly I'm not sure. I have intervened before when some kids were throwing things at a man in the street but it was daytime.

KitchiHuritAngeni · 25/10/2022 21:09

I intervened once and had a 2 week hospital stay for my troubles.

Never again. I would call the police, possibly take a video or photo if I safely could.

greenlampcat · 25/10/2022 21:11

Intervene

mackthepony · 25/10/2022 21:21

Walk past

Pumpkinpatchlookinggood · 25/10/2022 21:24

Walking I would ring the police.
Once whilst driving I mounted the path near some lads kicking 1 local lad and told him to get in. Took him home.

sheepandcaravan · 25/10/2022 21:25

Intervene as loudly as possible, PC SMITH are you ok, has your camera broken, come with me now mine is working, I'm calling for back up.

But I'm a country bumpkin and out of my depth and used to charging cows and stuff

Discovereads · 25/10/2022 21:26

I’d call the police discretely, around the corner.

aurynne · 25/10/2022 21:26

If you were being harassed by the 5 yobs and the Asian guy was the one walking past, what would you like him to do?

SummerBluez · 25/10/2022 21:27

Thanks all. This happened recently in my town - the woman intervened, got a bike lock to the jaw and all the men including the victim (!) left her on the floor with a fractured jaw. Horrific.

I always thought I would do something in situations like this but now I know without a shadow of a doubt I would walk past. Phoning the police would be lovely but my local force are horrendous - they'd turn up eight hours later or not at all.

Discovereads · 25/10/2022 21:34

Horrible that happened but still it was a bit stupid really to confront 5 menacing people by yourself. I think even if a man had intervened he would have been set upon, unless he was a giant or had a gun.

@FullyHammy
Don't know HUN I'm not religious. Maybe not make desperate to be edgy comments on Mumsnet threads though because that's just embarrassing.

@FullyHammy
You're embarrassing yourself. And it's "here" for you. "Hear" is something you do with your ears.

I’d probably intervene, while filming. I can’t help myself, for better or worse.

I'm not engaging with you as you've been utterly ridiculous for absolutely no reason.
All other posters I will happily interact with.

Men are told to NOT intervene either. For the same reason than what happened in the OP post. The person, man or woman is likely to end up in hospital…. You know the 6 against 1 issue.

loobylou10 · 25/10/2022 21:56

@FullyHammy are you on glue???
oP - I would like to think I'd intervene but listening to others, calling the police would be best.
