It aired 30 years ago today and has never aired in full since. I have been reading the Wikipedia and it sounds very spooky but also seemed such a good trick that people actually believed it was true. I was only 1 at the time so I haven't seen it.

OP posts:

I watched it recently (I also watched it at the time) it was very obviously a drama and not real. I honestly can't believe that some people really thought it was real! Maybe because Parky was hosting?

Even so, its very good! (Although dated) Seeing Pipes in the background is really freaky! It's actually done really well, quite scary in parts.

squarepegleg · 25/10/2022 20:43

I was a teenager babysitting at the time. It was really scary!

I know it was ridiculous but honestly the power of persuasion and confirmation bias was very real.

The presenters were trusted and felt 'known' to us so I was easily sucked in.

Elsanore · 25/10/2022 20:44

I watched it at the time and it was terrifying. I was a child however.

My DH and I were talking about this recently!! It was amazing for it's time.

Inasec24 · 25/10/2022 20:44

I was a child and absolutely terrified and 100% believed it

interstatelovesong · 25/10/2022 20:44

Oh my gosh I was so scared ! Was 12 and totally believed it

Watched it as an adult and tbh was still quite scary 😆

McSleepy · 25/10/2022 20:44

I was 11 and watched it at a friends house and we were all absolutely terrified!

Kobrakid · 25/10/2022 20:44

I have it on dvd! Absolutely love it! It holds up better than some horror films although I don’t understand how people thought it was real.

Ilovelurchers · 25/10/2022 20:45

Yes. Even tho I knew it was a drama it utterly terrified me. I love horror still but do scare easily. I do remember it being very good, tho not many of the details.

Figgygal · 25/10/2022 20:45

Yup remember watching it and all the fuss afterwards but it was so believable at the time

LordEmsworth · 25/10/2022 20:47

I was a teenager and yes watched it - it was advertised as true but really obvious as soon as it started that it wasn't. However it was excellently done and very scary.

Nadal · 25/10/2022 20:47

I had videoed it because I was on a Saturday night out. I watched it with a hangover the next day and was quizzing my mum if anything had been on the news 😂 it was scary for its time definitely. Probably looks a bit lame now.

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 25/10/2022 20:48

Yep, I was a teen and it was scary!

mnahmnah · 25/10/2022 20:49

I did. Must have been around 13. I’m sure I watched it on a sleepover with a friend and everyone excitedly talking about it at school the next day. I’m pretty sure we al knew it was fake though. It didn’t leave me scarred or anything! It was all good fun.

ronswansonstache · 25/10/2022 20:49

I think I was about 10 or 11 when it aired. It utterly scared the shit out of me! I think I twigged that it was fake towards the end when it got a bit over the top but the first parts filming inside the house were terrifying!

Bananalanacake · 25/10/2022 20:49

Really, 30 years ago today, but it's only the 25th. I was 14 at the time and completely sucked in.

Namechanger1002 · 25/10/2022 20:50

I was 16 and was convinced it was true. It petrified me. Can't believe it was 30 years ago 😱

ChandlersDad · 25/10/2022 20:50

Yes. I was 14.

Great chapter on it in Josh Widdecombe’s book ‘Watching neighbours twice a day’

BattenburgSlice · 25/10/2022 20:52

Yes! Freaked me out but loved it…Pipes 👻

I was 10 and was so scared that I had to sleep in my sisters room that night.

Yes! I was going to say this!

NoOnKnows · 25/10/2022 20:56

Its a shame that this sort of tv show wouldn't work now would it? Social media would make it too easy to debunk. Same with the Blair Witch Project.

PhoneyM · 25/10/2022 20:56

Yeah - on the day engaged to SbXH - should’ve been a sign 👻

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 25/10/2022 20:56

Was completely terrified. I really liked Sarah Greene from going live and was really worried about her!
