Did you watch Ghostwatch?

It aired 30 years ago today and has never aired in full since. I have been reading the Wikipedia and it sounds very spooky but also seemed such a good trick that people actually believed it was true. I was only 1 at the time so I haven't seen it.

I am still scarred by Ghostwatch! I remember it vividly, I was 14 and don't think I've been as scared since. My sister was the same, we were both petrified. I'm 100% sure my mum regretted letting us watch it Blush

bellac11 · 25/10/2022 21:37

It was really good but I remember realising it wasnt true or with members of the public because one of th actors in it had just been in Casualty or Holby City (whichever it was) in the programme before!!

Cornettoninja · 25/10/2022 21:39

I know the episode of no. 9 you’re talking about @tempch. Very similar vibes yes.

One thing that has knocked it on the head is on demand though - where I watched it Grin

I was 12 and watched it with my younger brother and my older sister who was looking after us. We fully believed it was real. I can remember how scared I felt. I didn't want to carry on watching but I was far too scared to leave the room and be elsewhere in the house alone. I'm sure I'd watch it now and think it was ridiculous. 12 year old me was traumatised.

I watched it and would've been 18. Someone said earlier it wouldn't happen again now but there was something similar on Inside Number 9 episode maybe last year? It was meant to be a live episode and there appeared to be some issues a few minutes in. Lots of people (according to social media) believed the issues to be real but in fact it was all part of the show.
Has anyone else seen that and does it ring similar bells to Ghostwatch or am I being daft?!

It was an episode called Dead Line in 2018 and yes, it was directly influenced by Ghostwatch. It was excellent but even then relied on you watching live.

Georgeskitchen · 25/10/2022 21:41

I remember watching it as a young mother when my little ones were in bed. I thought it was real but I think I started to get a bit sceptical by the end. I woke next morning and it was all over the papers, iirc there was quite a controversy over it say it had caused someone to be so terrified they killed themselves (or tried to) I might be completely wrong or the media might have been exaggerating, but I'm sure I remember reading that a lot of people did believe it and were very disturbed by it

tempch · 25/10/2022 21:44

Omg the Inside no 9 episode was 2018!! I honestly thought it was last year Confused

BoneyEmm · 25/10/2022 21:47

I would have been 13yrs old and it's probably my most terrifying memory.

Totally believed it was live and real. I couldn't watch it til the end. Remember going upstairs and shaking at the end of my bed..

I've seen loads of horror films and never get scared because I know they're fiction. I think it just seemed so real at the time.

I was 13 and watched it. I wasn’t too frightened but I was with my very sensible dad who explained it was all just pretend.

MostTacticalNameChange · 25/10/2022 21:56

It had me terrified at the time, age 11, but my mum eventually talked me down.

No bugger was there to rescue me from the 'look into the corner' of the Blair Witch, though.

Same with all the Danny Robbins episodes...bloody hell Ken.

RIP...me.

AutumnCrow · 25/10/2022 21:57

Yes I did watch Ghostwatch live, but it was obviously a set-up. Or so I thought.

It was well done, but I didn't think so people people would be taken in by it. Every day's a school day.

Tiswa · 25/10/2022 21:57

I referenced it just today as being something that really freaked me out
the dvd is a 12

irrrannuu · 25/10/2022 21:58

Agh I can't believe it was 30 years ago. I remember my parents were at a party at the neighbours house and I ran over there, banging the door down, totally terrified and refused to leave their house until my parents came home.

megletthesecond · 25/10/2022 21:58

I would have been 18. I realised it was staged silliness.

I was in my 20s, married and in the bath.

My (then-)husband came running in saying "You have to see this!! You have to see this!!"

He had been taken in, hook-line-sinker, but as soon as I saw it (having mostly dried off from my bath) I knew it was a drama.

As soon as I started expressing my scepticism he realised he'd been had! 😊

lapasion · 25/10/2022 22:11

I was 10 and allowed to stay up and watch part one. But it got too scary so I got sent to bed! However, I thought it was real, and didn’t find out until years later that it was a hoax.

DodgyLeftLeg · 25/10/2022 22:13

Oh look - FullyHammy on here too. Are most posts on MN trolls?

SusanPerbCallMeSue · 25/10/2022 22:15

I watched it at my dads, I was 16. For some reason my mum had sent me to his house, even though he wasn't there. He lived alone in a big Victorian semi. (We all used to live there, but moved out) I was watching it in the bedroom. All alone.

I took it all literally (undiagnosed autism ftw!) so was quite terrified. I phoned my mum, who wasn't watching it, so had no clue what I was on about.

I did realise at some point it wasn't real though. I was impressed with the realism of it, at the time. I don't know how it would stand up now.

I've told my kids about it, they thought it was funny that I thought it was real. I've raised cynical kids who don't believe everything they see and will question things, which is good I guess.

OldTinHat · 25/10/2022 22:21

Yes! I did, I was 21 and so wanted it to be real but knew it wasn't really.

SingingSands · 25/10/2022 22:22

Oh god what a blast from the past! PIPES!

I was 13. We watched it as a family, and were gripped. We had a good laugh at the end though. I remember my dad saying "well, Points of View will getting a sackful of complaints after that" and I quipped back "all written with a shaking hand though!".

Coffeepot72 · 25/10/2022 22:22

I was late teens and had been out that night. When I got home Mum told me about the most incredible ghost programme that had just been on (I can’t remember if she believed it or not), but thankfully I had recorded it, and played it back that night. I was genuinely terrified by Pipes, and to this day I remember the fear and whole palaver that followed. For its time, it was truly amazing TV

FromEden · 25/10/2022 22:24

I was 10 and it terrified me! I think I realised it wasn't real at the end when things started flying around back in the studio, but prior to that I was fully invested and traumatised by Mr pipes
