Best & worst Aldi buys

Best

chorizo & mozzarella sandwich pack
the luxury pizza’s
spatchcock chicken stuffed with pepper in a roasting bag
hummous fries
luxury sticky toffee pudding

worst

all potatoes - dry and grim no matter how you cook them
mushrooms - every pack was slimy
yogurts - haven’t found one I like yet

I’ve just started shopping at Aldi again and overall I do like it, but there are just some things that I cannot live without and good potatoes are one of them

i do find however that the prices are very similar now to Tesco.

we’re spending £80 on our main shop (from Aldi) and then doing a top up at Tesco. We’re 2 adults, 3.5 year old twins and 1 dog (although we don’t buy dog food from the supermarket)

I’ve stopped using Aldi, I find it’s no cheaper now than Tesco. I still had to go there to pick up the poor quality fruit and veg, horrible coffee, pizzas, inferior cereals that I couldn’t stand.

The prices have gone up astronomically as well.

Although i their toiletries are good and cheaper.

it made me laugh the other day in tesco they put their cheap beans up 4p to price match Aldi.

Im in Scotland , the potatoes from Scottish suppliers are fab , so sometimes I think where you are matters . It’s the same for the meat , we buy the Scottish produced steaks , mince , see

Their French style salted butter is great. The aged steaks are as good as any I’ve had from Waitrose.

Agree about the steaks. DH and I have a "Big Daddy" steak between us. It's gorgeous, and much cheaper than elsewhere. However, I understand that unlike most big supermarkets, Aldi doesn't use the same meat suppliers throughout all of their shops. So it can't be assumed that the steaks are equally good at all branches.

Oops pressed too soon ! Pork and eggs are great, better than our local Tesco or Morrisons

ShineOnYouLikeMorningStar · 23/10/2022 23:40

Loo roll - we prefer the one that's quilted (a dupe for Andrez Quilts I think) in a dark blue or purple pack. Really cheap. Careful you choose the right one as most of their loo rolls are scented... Hmm
Torchon ham
Coffee (ground not instant - we both only drink decaff & for the price it's pretty decent)

My DM really rates their cashew milk.

WeeblesWibbleWobble · 23/10/2022 23:49

I was a huge aldi fan but this past month I've had so much that's been awful

Carrots sprouting/ hairy
Spuds dry

Pancetta with end Nov opened and was black and furry on 1 half the pack. Binned all as put me off

Sausgaes pack blown and gone off with 7 days date still on them

Plus lots fruit going off.

Changed back to tesco the last 2 weeks and no problem and not much more in cost. But also saves a 25 min drive each way . So less time and fuel.
Sticking with tesco for a bit.

Favourites:
10% Greek yoghurt
Maple syrup
The ‘whole foods’ section nuts, seeds, 100% peanut butter
Porridge oats
Wine
Cheeses
Hot smoked salmon
Fresh herbs are great and slightly larger quantities than other shops.
The posh filled pasta

Bad:
The oat milk was absolutely disgusting, tasted like plastic.
Not too keen on the cleaning products, apart from dishwasher tablets which are amazing.

smooththecat · 23/10/2022 23:52

FYI to whoever posted about decaf, the decaf barista style in the metal tin is really good.

All coffee ive had from aldi seems pretty decent, fresh or instant.
Sadly lidls coffee is shit. The fresh stuff especially

Benjispruce4 · 24/10/2022 07:48

I just wish they would sell ground espresso coffee. Lidll do. Also they e stopped stocking cous cous and I can’t get dental floss. I get everything thing else at Aldi and it’s great quality.

Blueuggboots · 24/10/2022 07:59

The frozen lamb shanks in mint gravy are amazing.

Protein yoghurts, especially the salted caramel.

Their non-chicken kievs were amazing but they seem to have stopped making them.

Hash browns are the closest to McDonalds I've found.

All non-brand weetabix are vile, not just at Aldi.

Benjispruce4 · 24/10/2022 08:00

We have Aldi weetabix, it’s no different to me.

Blueuggboots · 24/10/2022 08:01

Oat milk is also great although it's climbed in price from 82p to 95p in a matter of months....

Blueuggboots · 24/10/2022 08:02

I always liked their nappies too!

AuntieMarys · 24/10/2022 08:09

I shop at Aldi first and Sainsburys on my way home for things I cant get.
2 Aldis within 2 miles, one better than the other.
Organic Malbec is amazing and the thick granary bread. I don't like the chicken at all ( the only meat I buy) but the salmon is good. Fruit and veg has been decent quality....I buy a lot of veg and it lasts for 4 days.
Fake Alpen is disgusting.
Cheese selection isn't great

tulips27 · 24/10/2022 08:34

StillWeRise · 23/10/2022 22:02

can you actually get these though??our Aldi hasn't had these for weeks

I've not bought any this month because one tub lasts me a long time. Going today though, will check. I think some of these shortages might be regional, my area is always out of waffle fries and other frozen stuff.

Benjispruce4 · 24/10/2022 08:41

Yes the Greek yoghurt is available in min most weeks. Yesterday they only had the low fat version so I bought two of the smaller pots.

AlwaysLatte · 24/10/2022 08:58

Bin 20 Shiraz only £5.99 and really decent.
My husband likes the cognac, £16.99. Other regulars are:
Authentic Greek yoghurt
Salted French butter
Aged fillet steaks
Cooked meats
Skin on frozen fries
Smooth fresh Orange juice in 1l carton
Worst is probably their own cereals and flavoured yoghurts - no one likes those.

tulips27 · 24/10/2022 09:08

If we're doing worsts too, that would be the "unsweetened" soy milk for me. Contains maltodextrin, which might not be a sugar but is used to raise blood sugar levels rapidly in those energy packs athletes used.

PatChaunceysFruitCake · 24/10/2022 11:46

Thanks @smooththecat, I'll check it out. I didn't realise they did the barista edition in decaf. I searched through and found some this morning.

Cigarettesaftersex1 · 24/10/2022 11:54

I agree about the chicken breasts, they are weirdly hard and gristly but the full chickens are good

Bluedoritos · 24/10/2022 11:58
  • Full fat Greek yoghurt
-specially selected pork chop/steak things (the ones with no bone in) They're really thick and only £2.89 for two
  • Cleaning wipes (better than Dettol ones!)
  • Their gel laundry detergent stuff is great
  • Shampoo and conditioner! I get the one in the brown bottles that are about 89p each and my hair is always lovely and soft after using but I admittedly do have very 'easy' hair (quite long, quite fine, naturally extremely straight)
  • Haven't seen them for ages but they did little jars of specially selected tomato and mascarpone pasta sauce that was really easy for a week night dinner
  • Their brioche burger buns are loads better than any other supermarket (especially Sainsbury's, theirs are awful)
  • Their chicken sausages are just as good as Heck ones
  • I prefer the Aldi own toastie loaf to Warburton's and it lasts loads longer but I have family members who completely disagree on that!

I don't mind their whole chickens but in the 7 years I've been shopping there I've bought their chicken breasts / chicken fillets a number of times and they've always been really poor quality (bordering on disgusting if I'm honest)

A new Lidl has opened just round the corner from us and I've had to transfer my allegiance from Aldi - the espresso coffee in the little vacuum packed block is a definite bonus.

Bluedoritos · 24/10/2022 12:00

Ooh I forgot to mention wine! Their bottles of primativo (not sure how you spell it) are lovely but have gone up in price recently like everything else!

Trying81 · 24/10/2022 12:35

Specially selected Lasagne - better than M&S
Chilled potato gratin
Steaks (as everyone already said)
burgers and brioche buns
specially selected pork sausages
Sliced tiger loaf
Moser Roth dark mint chocolate
Frozen Carlos garlic bread with cheese
Fresh Dentastix dupes for the dogs
