Best & worst Aldi buys

Best

chorizo & mozzarella sandwich pack
the luxury pizza’s
spatchcock chicken stuffed with pepper in a roasting bag
hummous fries
luxury sticky toffee pudding

worst

all potatoes - dry and grim no matter how you cook them
mushrooms - every pack was slimy
yogurts - haven’t found one I like yet

I’ve just started shopping at Aldi again and overall I do like it, but there are just some things that I cannot live without and good potatoes are one of them

i do find however that the prices are very similar now to Tesco.

we’re spending £80 on our main shop (from Aldi) and then doing a top up at Tesco. We’re 2 adults, 3.5 year old twins and 1 dog (although we don’t buy dog food from the supermarket)

After being a total snob about Aldi 🙈 I was converted years ago and now love the place. Still can’t do a full shop there as no GF bread/ pasta and a couple of other things but definitely get the majority. I rate :

Fish - better selection than some bigger supermarkets, cod, salmon fillets.
burgers & specially selected Cumberland chipolatas.
norpak (rip off lurpak)
steaks
skyr yoghurts
tomato Chilli pasta sauce
hazelnut chocolate
lentil hoop snacks
tuna steaks tinned
Italian coffee beans
toilet roll, kitchen roll, bleach, cleaning wipes
lots and lots more.

My absolute favourite items are the Argentinian Malbec and Pomegranate/Lime basil mandarin large candles. Always a few of each in my trolley, helpfully spending any savings I’ve made on the food shop! 😬

Oh my goodness pre twins we used to buy copious amounts of Argentine Malbec from Aldi, it’s so drinkable 😂 I haven’t had much of a drink in over 4 years, the idea of a hangover terrifies me

The specially selected prawn cocktail crisps. Amazing!
I also rate their face wipes, herbal essences rip off shampoo and conditioner, cold meats.

Narwhaleahoy · 23/10/2022 21:10

Frozen hash browns and flat sausages (McDonalds dupes)
Most of the skincare dupes, as they save me a fortune, although the miracle cream lacks the smell of Eight Hour cream which is a shame
I really miss Bushlands’ Shiraz, cheap, cheerful and consistently good but am managing to wean myself successfully onto Estiavic (? Can’t remember how to spell it) Shiraz instead.
DH really rates their golden syrup instant porridge pots and the mint gravy flavour lamb shanks.
DCats sadly do NOT rate Aldi cat food.

Worst - chicken breasts. Chewy and full of fat.
Best - 5 pack of mini chocolate bars

emilyjeff · 23/10/2022 21:17

Mostly all good I think! Only things I don't get there is dog food and branded washing liquid/ cleaning products.
The aldi red potatoes are really nice, and I get the big bucket of Greek style natural yoghurt, it's lovely.

User129867588 · 23/10/2022 21:17

I forgot about the baked beans - they are loads better than Heinz and cheaper than Branstons. Had some on jackets today along with the Aldi mild cheddar which is ask lovely

Annabananna1 · 23/10/2022 21:24

Their candles are amazing.

Janch13 · 23/10/2022 21:40

Aldi pizza’s are elite especially the ham, mushroom and mascarpone 🤤

Their popcorn is good too (better than branded!) and I love their rip off version of the Kenco instant coffee.

I find most things at Aldi good but a lot of the veg (such as bagged salad) goes off super quick. Not usually an issue for us as we go through it quickly.

Benjispruce4 · 23/10/2022 21:51

You do have to check the dates in Aldi. But I buy fresh beer in weekly and keep in fridge and they last days, blueberries last nearly a week. Salad bags last a week. Do check the dates, they don’t seem to remove the stuff with a close date I suppose as they don’t have space for a reduced section .
As for fatty chicken breasts?? How is that possible?

TheVolturi · 23/10/2022 21:52

Their Gordon's gin rip off, Greysons is amazing. And just over a tenner.

ColonelRhubarbBikini · 23/10/2022 21:58

A friend works for the big yogurt company that make Corners and they also make the yogurts for Aldi, Lidl and Morrisons own brand so the PP who said the Aldi version are just as nice as Corners is correct because they are Corners just in a different package.

I love the large tubs of 10% Greek yoghurt. It depends on what kind of yoghurt you want, though.

can you actually get these though??our Aldi hasn't had these for weeks

Cm078 · 23/10/2022 22:28

Good - their own mars bars. Titan i think it is. And their scotch eggs are nice! And beans.
Their beef put in the slow cooker all day is also quite yummy.

Worst - chicken breast. Tried it once, won't try it again🤮

3peassuit · 23/10/2022 22:34

Their French style salted butter is great. The aged steaks are as good as any I’ve had from Waitrose.

MrsSkylerWhite · 23/10/2022 22:37

Can’t fathom this thread at all, unless you work for Lidl.
i find all Aldi products pretty good.

xyzzyx · 23/10/2022 22:40

My new tap is the best thing ever!
The worst? Them dark choc crisp like things

Branleuse · 23/10/2022 22:40

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 23/10/2022 19:53

The Aldi farmhouse yogurts in the little jars are lovely!

I was going to say those. The lemon curd one especially

NorthernSoul55 · 23/10/2022 22:49

Long time Aldi shopper.

Best
Steak
Protein Yoghurts and the Greek yoghurt
The frozen sole in lemon crumb
Own brand nutella
Gold tea bags (not any others)
Multi grain crackers

Worst
Bacon. Thin and shrivels up

Wish they sold
A wider range of meat free products
Frozen spinach

TheFairyCaravan · 23/10/2022 22:50

We always buy Aldi chicken breasts. It’s really tender.

We love their Thai Curry kits.

King Prawns
Don’t have a problem with their berries.
DH likes their Orchard cider that’s £1.59 a bottle.
Skin on fries
Basa fillets
Baked beans
DH is happy with their cornflakes
Their digestive and rich tea biscuits are excellent. No way will I pay for branded now.

I like their big pot soya yoghurts.

peridito · 23/10/2022 22:57

@Pootle40 _ I'm almost certain I saw Wagu burgera this weekend .

Churry · 23/10/2022 22:57

I find most of the fresh stuff is inconsistent, when it's good it's very good but the next week it can be meh at best or inedible at worst.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 23/10/2022 23:04

The only thing I think is actually not very good is the instant coffee.

Other than that I have loved most things from Aldi. The cheese, the olives, the wine and the cold meat are especially good. The dark chocolate is good.

The ruby port is great too.

The cosmetics are all fab especially the benefit dupe mascara and the hot cloth cleanser.

PatChaunceysFruitCake · 23/10/2022 23:07

@NorthernSoul55, have you tied the premium range bacon? That is nice.

Forgot to add the red pepper hummus to my list. It's lush
