desperate to get rid of spiders :(

hi,

anyone get any tips of how to get rid of spiders? i’m in my final year of uni and my room has (which i believe wasn’t used last year) had multiple spiders and cobwebs.

I’ve killed 7 in the past week already, both big ones and babies. Tonight i’ve found two big ones under my bedside table despite me killing some in the exact same location in the previous days. It’s really getting to me and irritating as i cannot relax knowing there’s probably spiders nearby. I hate them so much.

I ordered some peppermint oil that’s coming tomorrow but some say it works and other claims it does nothing. Any other tips? does the oil work? thanks all

Move out!! Or get a cat

SalviaOfficinalis · 22/10/2022 22:36

Autumn is spider season, it’s when they all come out of hiding to mate.

I know that doesn’t help with your problem right now, just wanted to reassure you that it’s going to get better not worse.

B1pbop · 22/10/2022 22:37

Keep hoovering. Hoover the skirting and coving. Don’t let them take hold and make any webs!

Elieza · 22/10/2022 22:39

Find out where they are getting in. Airholes in bricks. Old fireplaces. Badly fitting windows. Between floorboards. Cracks in walls etc. and block them up.

FlibbertyGiblets · 22/10/2022 22:39

OP can't move out or get a cat because she is at Uni.

Peppermint oil, diluted and sprayed is a good idea.

SpinningFloppa · 22/10/2022 22:42

Cats don’t always work I have a cat and she’s never killed any spiders or flies for that matter 😏

tinatea · 22/10/2022 22:43

Don't worry you are not alone. I have such a fear for them too. My worst nightmare.
As others have said, daily hovering of corners under bed, window sills. Peppermint oil all corners, and try to seal any gaps.
If you have floorboards try to cover with huge rugs if you can't cover with carpet.

It won't last for ever. Hang in there.

Conkers. Might be still some around.

BananaCocktails · 22/10/2022 22:47

My cat kills every bug that moves lol but check for any spiders nests under furniture on top of furniture ect as sounds like that’s where baby ones coming from
keep hoovering too
don’t worry though in the UK most spiders are harmless and although you hate them they will do everything to avoid you
Spiders are good in that they keep other bugs at bay but seriously your not in any danger

check for a nest and keep hoovering

The thin ones that hang upside down? Cellar spiders? I have the worlds biggest fear of them, and am in total sypmathy. I got masking tape, and tapped up everywhere they could get into my room at night, even cracks in the door. It seems drastic, but that's my level of fear.

You can fill cracks under skirting board with folded newspaper. There's also spider killer spray from diy shop Tesco might have it. Spray around edges of the room, window frames etc. That should take care of it. You could buy a mosquito net and sleep under it if that helps you sleep.

secondtonone · 22/10/2022 22:53

A friend of mine has some sort of high frequency plug that apparently repels them? Can't vouch for it myself, but she thinks it's works quite well.

Olivetreebutter · 22/10/2022 22:54

I've got a shark handheld hoover and that has helped because I can get them really easily. Hoover regularly and pull our furniture. I've got some peppermint spray and I do think it works but youve got to spray it over and over again.

Valhalla17 · 22/10/2022 22:57

Get a spray like this, go round all the skirting boards and cracks, windows etc. Spray it every 4 weeks or so and it will help. I rarely see spiders in my flat since using.

Don't kill those ones - they trap the big hairy house spiders that run about. Those spindly ones just hang about in their webs not doing much.

I've cultivated the spindly ones in my house (draughty Victorian full of crevices and gaps) and I have seen one house spider this year - trapped in the bath.

CellarBellaatemycoal · 22/10/2022 23:00

apparently the plug in thing (eBay) is amazing. I think it’s a high frequency noise though and iirc (may be wrong)you can hear them if you’re below a certain age?
So depends how old you are!
But I’ve heard people say they not only rid the house of spiders, but other crawly critters too. Worth a try for a tenner or so.

Dillydollydingdong · 22/10/2022 23:05

Why are you killing spiders, like some sort of demented slaughterer? Put a glass over them and slide a piece of card underneath, then tip them outside. They don't do any harm.

Eyesopenwideawake · 22/10/2022 23:09

Get some help for your spider phobia. It's not your fault, you "inherited" it from your mother or other significant carer (and they got it from theirs) but with a bit of thought you can live and let live. If rational thought doesn't work, hypnosis will.

Rowthe · 22/10/2022 23:14

Get some conkers if you can.

We had loads but since we got some conkers.

I've only seen one in the whole house. Its was a few everyday before that.

So put a couple in each corner of the room. And two on each side of the window sill.

user568720164728553401928574738 · 22/10/2022 23:15

Indorex spray. Spray your room and around your windows. They'll die shortly after they walk over it.

Conkers on your window ledge.
