desperate to get rid of spiders :(

hi,

anyone get any tips of how to get rid of spiders? i’m in my final year of uni and my room has (which i believe wasn’t used last year) had multiple spiders and cobwebs.

I’ve killed 7 in the past week already, both big ones and babies. Tonight i’ve found two big ones under my bedside table despite me killing some in the exact same location in the previous days. It’s really getting to me and irritating as i cannot relax knowing there’s probably spiders nearby. I hate them so much.

I ordered some peppermint oil that’s coming tomorrow but some say it works and other claims it does nothing. Any other tips? does the oil work? thanks all

Why are you killing spiders, like some sort of demented slaughterer? Put a glass over them and slide a piece of card underneath, then tip them outside. They don't do any harm.

“demented slaughterer” Blush i wish i was brave enough to do that! plus they’re always in awkward spots and run off so it’s pretty hard to trap and let go, my window can’t even open that far anyways

And a plug in.

secondtonone · 22/10/2022 23:17

I don't mind little ones, but I went to get in the shower today and there was a HUGE one. I let out a ridiculous scream and then managed to evacuate it out of the window.

10 mins later I heard a similarly ridiculous scream from my neighbours flat below. Probably wasn't related, but made me laugh to think my unwanted guest had found himself new digs so quickly.

Sticky pads from Amazon.

NoSki · 22/10/2022 23:21

Keep killing them, look at any gaps under skirting and plug or tape over. Spider killer spray around windows and doors. You can buy sticky traps from Amazon and put them in corners/under wardrobes etc/by the door where they come in. You can check each day and dispose of them. Once you’ve stopped a load in their tracks they’ll soon thin out.

MugginsOverEre · 22/10/2022 23:21

Don't kill those ones - they trap the big hairy house spiders that run about. Those spindly ones just hang about in their webs not doing much.
I've cultivated the spindly ones in my house (draughty Victorian full of crevices and gaps) and I have seen one house spider this year - trapped in the bath.

@MintChocCornetto

I could have written that. In our old house we named them mama spiders because they would have a spray of 30+ teeny babies in the cobweb around them. We tried to get rid of them when we first moved in, hoovering dozens up each day. Eventually we simply got used to them, just sitting high up in the corners, rarely moving and never really bothering anyone. We became desensitised to them. And in the 7 years we lived there we NEVER saw a big hairy bastard spider.

New house however? I could cry. No cellar spiders but plenty of tarantula wannabes thudding loudly across the wood floors.

OP, cellar spiders live where it's slightly damp. Maybe not always enough to cause mould or damp damage, just more humid than a dry new build. You could buy loads of those dehumidifier boxes and place them around or invest in a proper dehumidifier. It would discourage them from your room.

walkingonsunshinekat · 22/10/2022 23:22

The more you kill, the more that will replace them to fill the space YOU created, you can't stop them.

They kill and eat things like Dust mites... IF you leave them be.

Sticky pads from Amazon.

What @tara66 suggested. These. Don’t bother folding into triangles, just lat the whole thing flat against the skirting.

Spider-X spray will repel them. Indorex spray (usually used to get rid of fleas) will kill them on contact. Both on Amazon.

Keep windows closed makes real difference .

Oooh I didn't connect that they like slightly damp places with the fact they are called cellar spiders 🙄

We don't get many of them upstairs and I've only ever seen house spiders on the upper floors since I decided the skinny spiders are my friends and they have made themselves little homes under the radiators. This is all making sense now!

Gazelda · 22/10/2022 23:38

Conkers. I've got some tucked into corners of very room. They've been there several years and definitely make a difference to the number of spiders that I find.

ringsaglitter · 22/10/2022 22:51

The thin ones that hang upside down? Cellar spiders? I have the worlds biggest fear of them, and am in total sypmathy. I got masking tape, and tapped up everywhere they could get into my room at night, even cracks in the door. It seems drastic, but that's my level of fear.

As MissChocCornetto says - don't kill the skinny spindley spiders!

They actually kill the big hairy fast ones!!!
They are awesome, there was a bbc document I saw years ago and they are super quick and can kill them, they can even kill false widows but are harmless to humans.

I have a massive spider phobia but have learnt to love the skinny spiders and actively try to encourage them🙂

Bwannita · 22/10/2022 23:39

I feed my house spiders flies 😂

They're wonderful guests.

Ive gotten over my arachnophobia and now have 8 pet spiders

SeaSunandSand · 22/10/2022 23:39

Buy a spider vac and keep trapping and moving them outside. It eventually seems to work!

House spiders will die if you put them outside.

NoSki · 23/10/2022 00:23

Keep killing them OP, they just come straight back in if you put them outside.

Daisychainsandglitter · 23/10/2022 07:20

I have a spider catcher about £14.99 from Argos. I'm also scared of them but don't like to kill them. I can just about bring myself to catch them and put them outside with my spider catcher. I'd really recommend one and they're humane.

I like the big fat spiders, only thin cellar spiders I have an issue with lol

Sussyknowsthemeaningoflife · 10/05/2023 00:14

Really not helpful advice if you have a spider phobia!
