Are we likely to face blackouts this winter?

asblindasabat · 18/10/2022 19:23

I’m sure everyone has heard that there may be blackouts this winter to deal with the energy shortage.

It’s 2022, I can’t believe I’m even hearing stuff like this!

Is this likely to even happen?

i have attached the link to the article I read in case people haven’t heard and think I’m talking nonsense.

Million threads on this already.

InFiveMins · 18/10/2022 19:39

No. It's just typical scaremongering.

Malfi · 18/10/2022 19:45

Well, the expert in the article itself says it is “unlikely” to happen.

vodkaredbullgirl · 18/10/2022 19:47

Another blackout post.

declutteringmymind · 18/10/2022 19:48

Who knows???

Plan for the worst, hope for the best. I do think we need to look at being a bit more self sufficient for the long term, and fuel should be rationed rather than blackouts but I'm not sure if it's possible.

DuchessOfDisco · 18/10/2022 19:49

Well Liz Truss said she wouldn’t approve blackouts last week so based on that, I’d say we will 😉

BattenburgDonkey · 18/10/2022 19:49

Is this likely to even happen?

The article you shared answered this question, no. As it says, it’s unlikely. It is possible yes, but unlikely.

No. It's just typical scaremongering.

I remember people being called scaremongerers for suggesting there may be lockdowns, school closures and enforced vaccinations.

Another blackout post.

Then why click on it when it’s very clear in the title it’s a blackout post 🙄

limitededitionbarbie · 18/10/2022 19:51

I doubt it, power cuts to homes will be a last resort.

Who made you MN police????

limitededitionbarbie · 18/10/2022 19:52

Now I have committed to a no it will probably be announced it will happen Blush

thirstyformore · 18/10/2022 19:53

Nah. Won't happen.

lannistunut · 18/10/2022 19:54

Sick of any conversation that isn't isn't everything marvellous being labelled scaremongering.

@asblindasabat blackouts - not likely, in fact currently described as 'unlikely', but possible. Worth prepping a little bit (make sure you have a torch) but not prepping a lot (cancel the order for the petrol generator).

Liz Truss was the one who decided to scrap our gas storage I think - another good move there, Liz!

Malfi · 18/10/2022 19:54

It might happen. It’s possible. But it’s unlikely.

Last after what else? If there is not enough power, power cuts to homes will be needed.

It’s you policing and complaining about people’s threads. I was just asking why you’re expending time and energy on threads that clearly annoy you that you’re not going to contribute anything useful to.

After trying to source enough power for one thing. Doesn’t make a difference if there aren’t loads of options, it’s still a last resort.

Not just me who mentioned another blackout thread.

canyouextrapol · 18/10/2022 20:00

4-7? BBQ for dinner every day then

changingroom · 18/10/2022 20:00

They have said it won't happen unless we get a seriously hard winter eg Beast from the East (2018). Even then it's unlikely.

lannistunut · 18/10/2022 20:00

BattenburgDonkey · 18/10/2022 19:57

But obviously black outs will only occur if we can't 'source enough power', so it is not a last resort, it is an only resort.

The risk of not being able to source enough power is higher than previous years for obvious reasons.

limitededitionbarbie · 18/10/2022 20:03

@lannistunut

I would imagine none essential services turned off first, they will also pay large industrial users to turn off at peak times if they can which will help, homes will be a last resort I would have thought as the implications would be massive if it causes a death etc.

Cuppasoupmonster · 18/10/2022 20:04

It’s something to be ‘aware’ of but not worried about, in my opinion. A lot of posters are going to be absolutely loving the ‘blackout watch’ though 😆

Nobody is saying it isn’t higher. You are just oddly taking issue with ‘last resort’. There is nothing wrong with that saying, they won’t do it if they have other options will they… so it’s a last resort. Call black outs the only resort if you like though, it’s a little dramatic in my opinion but whatever.
