Are we likely to face blackouts this winter?

I’m sure everyone has heard that there may be blackouts this winter to deal with the energy shortage.

It’s 2022, I can’t believe I’m even hearing stuff like this!

Is this likely to even happen?

i have attached the link to the article I read in case people haven’t heard and think I’m talking nonsense.

I'm not saying it won't happen just that I think it's unlikely in that I'm imagining they will shorten opening hours of shops etc to lessen the power requirement before they cut off houses. Imagine the uproar if you had no power but the Tesco was still open. That sort of thing. I'm guessing though.

@lannistunut

I would imagine none essential services turned off first, they will also pay large industrial users to turn off at peak times if they can which will help, homes will be a last resort I would have thought as the implications would be massive if it causes a death etc.

Homes will be switched off before businesses, I thought that was the point?

I will say I said upthread it was 'unlikely' - I am not expecting it to happen!

I think they might be if I'm honest.

Europe is really Struggling and there is an article about world wide energy supply in the bbc news webpage now.

If it's running low what choices are there realistically

Anytime something @g is reported as being "unlikely" to happen just males me thi k..it will definitely happen!!! Maybe not in Jan/Feb..they will threaten this so when they announce it will actually happen on March/April thw general public will think...well at least its not in the middle of winter and accept it!!!!

limitededitionbarbie · 18/10/2022 20:17

@lannistunut

I think non essential businesses will be turned off before domestic supplies.

If not, the next big claim line will be "did you have an accident during you power cut"

There would definitely be riots otherwise.

That is what I think anyway.

@limitededitionbarbie If we are lucky we will never find out which of us was right!

limitededitionbarbie · 18/10/2022 21:15

@lannistunut yes!!!

I'm flip flopping on this, depends which 'expert' is on LBC 😂 It depends how economical people are & how much they buy & can store (not much I suspect)

But, to be honest, for me it's not too bad & especially if it's scheduled. So I'm not doing anything too drastic to prep.

I will get a couple of lamps. I'm going to get a solar one & a rechargeable one. (I have been meaning to do this anyway)

I'm going to get a radio.

I have (ordinary) blankets & a hot water bottle. We will get a schedule, so I'll warm the house up first if possible & shower in the day.

I have power banks for my phone, so I'll make sure they're topped up.

I'm not bothered about eating cold food/drinking cold drinks, so I'm not faffing about things to cook on.

I'm more concerned about the fridge freezer
