Unexpected loyalty points balance.

Hi,

NC for the post incase it got picked up by any stupid tabloids.

Just wondering where I stand with this.

Just been into a store that I go to regularly, completed my transaction with my loyalty and debit cards and glanced at my receipt to check the balance on the loyalty card.
I thought it seemed like a lot of points (197,767), and it didn’t have the normal second line where it tells you the cash value.
When I got back to my car I checked the app for the loyalty card and it says that I do have 197,767 points with a cash equivalent of £1977.67.

I thought I had between £19-£25 on there, wasn’t sure. I do go on regularly and load the offers and competitions but hadn’t had any contact saying I’d won anything.

When I got home I logged into my account properly on a browser and it looks like yesterday someone in customer service applied x9 Good will gesture points of 20,000 at a time, and then 1x further GWG of 15,200.

I did not have any interaction with this company yesterday, nor am I currently engaged in any complaint or dispute.

I think I’m going to ring them and tell them about it because I couldn’t take the anxiety of them trying to claw it back in cash or whatever if I spent the points.

But I just wondered what the law says about it all? Can misattributed points balances ever be clawed back in cash? Does the law consider them to be equivalent to cash?

Thank you.

This is a lovely post. Well done! Have super fun spending the points.

Creditscoredrop · 14/10/2022 20:50

If you’ve only got a small store locally I’d suggest going online, you can get loads of stuff at this time year. I’d do as much Christmas shopping there as possible so that would save me money, then as a treat for myself a years supply of perfume, premium skincare for a year, premium make-up for a year (my big store does Benefit and Bare minerals amongst other brands). Dyson hair dryer and all the fancy hair care products. Oh and my one does red letter days so I’d get a ballon ride or an afternoon tea or two! Congratulations! Have fun spending! What a treat! It’s like Brewster’s Millions!

Why are you being coy about saying they’re Boots points?!

I totally misread the amount you won as £19k. Still £2k is a massive amount - you just might not to be able to go as mad as I envisioned! 😂

UserNameNameNameUser · 14/10/2022 20:56

Congratulations 🥳

Thats so sweet that you contacted them to do the right thing, and they were really yours. Good karma 😊Enjoy spending them.

It's usually so the post doesn't come up in a google or any search related to that shop. OP has posted a screenshot with the name in, as that would t show in a search.

PurplePinecone · 14/10/2022 20:58

My first thought the Dyson airwrap!
The Philips lumea
Maybe Dyson hair dryer?
And the rest Xmas gifts!

Soundofshuna · 14/10/2022 20:59

They sell washing machines online so if you need a new one..( not glamorous but!)

Because when I started my thread I didn’t know I’d won anything and I asked about what the legalities of loyalty points are, if they land in your account by accident, etc.

If I’d typed the retailer and the name of the loyalty scheme out in full then it would have come up every time someone searched for the retailers loyalty scheme due to the way Mumsnets SEO seems to work. Every time I’ve googled any kind of random scenario, a mumsnet thread will pop up about it, I would just prefer for that not to happen.

Good to hear honesty pays, you can spend and enjoy them now instead of worrying as you would have done if you had spent them without checking.

JudgeRindersMinder · 14/10/2022 21:02

Happy Days!

CaptainCarp · 14/10/2022 21:04

Oh wow congrats OP!
At the moment I'd by a carseat with that money, then a few nice outfits & probably stock up on the "expensive" nappy / nipple cream 😂
If no baby - Christmas presents especially if anyone you buy for likes perfume, might by a new 1 for myself as well.
Probably restock my make up (most of mine is older than it should be!)

Justcallmebebes · 14/10/2022 21:04

Wow. Congratulations OP Grin

JessicaPeach · 14/10/2022 21:05

Wow, what a win!!

I'd buy a nice full set of make up to start with.

You can probably spend boots points on the boots appliances website so might be worth exploring that.

Enjoy!

ShineOnYouLikeMorningStar · 14/10/2022 21:06

An IPL machine (the Braun one is easier to use than the Lumea)

Putdownthecake · 14/10/2022 21:07

Ah how nice to read a positive outcome.
Hair wrap
Make up
Yankee candles
Perfume
Xmas pressies
Fabcy polaroid camera

Madcats · 14/10/2022 21:10

It's so lovely to hear about people winning these things. It's a hefty amount to spend (hopefully there is an online spend/collect option too). It's probably worth checking when the Black Friday deals start to max out the value.

If you can spare a bit of your winnings, maybe check whether the local food bank would appreciate toothbrushes/paste/shampoo/hand cream etc.

Happy "spending"

Madcats · 14/10/2022 21:15

Just thought i'd check Boots online to fantasy shop; I'm blaming OP for the "come back later" message.

Sorry, I’ve probably caused the website to buckle under the strain of 7 people fantasy shopping 😂 It’s not a great website.

Ooooh that's Christmas and birthdays sorted for a long time!!

SummerSazz · 14/10/2022 21:48

They do loads of stuff online including electronics and kitchen appliances. Don't restrict yourself to makeup type stuff!! Congratulations btw

LiftyLift · 14/10/2022 21:49

Could you pick a nice make up brand and get them to do you a makeover and buy the products from that? Could choose some lovely perfumes, Christmas gifts, naice skincare, hair products, fancy nail treatments. Lucky you!

vegang · 14/10/2022 21:50

I'd get a Dyson hair dryer and some nice perfume then I'd get everyone's Christmas presents from there so it didn't cost me anything 😆

mumda · 14/10/2022 21:50

Cor brilliant! Congratulations!

surreygirl1987 · 14/10/2022 21:55

Whoahhhhhh this is my favourite mumsnet thread ever! Congratulations!

I'd go for perfume, makeup, and hair appliances. Not even sure what Boots sells that's expensive. Enjoy your amazing windfall!!
