I wasn’t expecting middle age to start today.

I thought it’d be a slow run-in, but no. I hit middle age today.

Yesterday I was running around in the throes of youth, not even uttering a sigh as I got off the sofa. Today is a different matter.

I’m not sure how it happened but I inadvertently acquired a pair of “oh, they’d be handy to keep in the utility room and use to nip out to the washing line” shoes this morning. I was in a local hardware shop and they just kind of manifested in my trolley. They’re practically clogs. Green, rubbery, wool-lined, and ridiculously comfortable. Like Crocs- only uglier.

This is just the start of it, isn’t it?

Yes, the end is nigh.

CheezePleeze · 08/10/2022 13:46

Yes it's all downhill from here (although obviously you'll need a separate pair of downhill running shoes).

Next you'll be asking anyone in a skirt above the knee if they're cold 😏

Crunchymum · 08/10/2022 13:46

Crocs are actually the height of fashion at the moment. Just saying.

Choopi · 08/10/2022 13:47

I have a nice pair of green rubber clogs too. I use them for pottering around the garden. I'm 36 and have clearly accepted my middle age. The kids take the piss but they are very practical.

Don't be cruel.

The OP may have reached middle age, but she's not bloody gullible 😂😂

Vapeyvapevape · 08/10/2022 13:48

Watch out for the next step - saying oooof every time you sit down or stand up.

Vapeyvapevape · 08/10/2022 13:50

My 24 year old daughter has just bought some crocs , they really are all the rage .

<sighs> 'all the rage' is a very middle aged thing to say

enjoyingscience · 08/10/2022 13:51

Ooh, lovely. They sound great. Enjoy your new shoes and accompanying care free life.

Winter99Mermaid · 08/10/2022 13:53

I have some and everyone takes the piss but they all use them to nip out in garden as they live by back door for washing live & dog duties !

But are they trendy? 🤣

(Grabs middle aged coat and leaves)...

I put them on to let the dogs out this morning. I’d swear they rolled their eyes.

They genuinely are very 'now'
My dd is 22, a fashion graduate, works for a trendy little designer and everyone her age wears them.
With socks 😳

otherwayup · 08/10/2022 13:56

I borrow them to hang the washing out. So convenient and comfy too!!!

Billybagpuss · 08/10/2022 13:59

When crocs first appeared they were cool for about a week and I’ve been using the same pair now for my nipping out to the garden ever since, I guess it must be about 15 years, they last well.

and yes I became middle age the day I first put them on.

Imissmoominmama · 08/10/2022 14:13

Trendy is the most middle aged word ever.

MrsMoastyToasty · 08/10/2022 14:17

Have policemen and headteachers started to look like they've only just left school themselves?

Ineedwinenow · 08/10/2022 14:19

I use trendy all the time and I know that isn’t a “trendy” word anymore but other than cool I have no idea what to use to describe something that’s in fashion or on “trend” I’m so middle age now it’s embarrassing!

I don’t know any bands anymore, don’t understand have youths talk, why young people dress or style themselves like they do and I love my wheelbarrow, gardening shoes and smooth radio station…. I’m only 41! ( it doesn’t help that we don’t have kids so they can’t teach us modern ways 😆)

Now that you mention it, I met a GP recently who didn’t look like he was old enough to drive. I genuinely thought he was a work experience student and spent a few second waiting for the “real” doctor to arrive.

Do you emit an involuntary grunt when you sit down or stand up? Dead giveaway that one.

And creek! Your bones regularly creek when you sit or stand, when you get to middle age!

Vapeyvapevape · 08/10/2022 14:32

I do the 'half stand' , stand up from the sofa with my hands resting just above my bent knees , take a minute (grunt) and then stand up straight.

Oh god, I just realised I’ve been doing a two-part get-up for a while now.

It really starts to kick in when you begin to pause outside shops you've never set foot inside before (eg Edinburth Woollen Mill) and think "I could do some comfy slacks".

And the Damart catalogue becomes required reading. Some nice cardis in there 🙂

I was all chuffed last week when I got two free tickets to any National Trust place. Then the middle aged reality of feeling excited about it hit me :(
