Please tell me about Hull!

DD is looking at Uni’s & one that offers a course she likes the look of is Hull. We live in London so I’m pretty clueless about what Hull is like (Google is not complementary, but then half the country think London’s a dump so that’s not much to go on!)
Most of the unis she’s looked at so far have been London/SE but we both think it might be good to look further afield (cost of living being an obvious advantage of moving away)
From her point of view she wants somewhere with a bit of life (nightlife in particular but also theatres & shops)
From a mum point of view I want somewhere reasonably safe (keep in mind we live in London so my idea of safe is not a little village!)

Hull is very underrated, I lived there for a while and really liked it. Hill Truck theatre is pretty good, if she wants theatre. Also, everything in Hull tends to be a bit cheaper than other places.

IamThegreaterMole · 07/10/2022 23:16

Hull Truck Theatre, not Hill!

They are filming The Crown there now. It has a fabulous old town and thriving music scene.

My ds told me this the other day! He said the old town is used quite a lot for filming.

Hull is great. Good uni, good nightlife. Great theatres. Yes some of it is rough but those bits are residential areas which your daughter will have no reason to go to. But beware, a lot of students choose to stay in hull after uni because it's so great, so she'll be a long way from you!

Furries · 10/10/2022 01:59

Watch out for blokes called Brian 😂

Blix · 10/10/2022 13:30

Enola Holmes is filmed there. The "London" bits.

I'm from Hull. I had an amazing student experience (didn't do Uni there as wanted to go away, but my sixth form days were the best) . It's a city but it's small, Everyone knows everyone. Sure there are some dodgy places, but there are everywhere. Hull is magical to me - feels amazing just standing under the Humber Bridge in winter when it's all lit up! Hull Fair is just the best too.

Admittedly, my family lived 7 miles outside of Hull in a very nice well to do village but Hull is frankly, just the best city.

For comparison. I've since lived in Sheffield, Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool - and would still pick Hull every time.

Hotpinkangel19 · 10/10/2022 13:48

I'm from Hull too. Some parts aren't the best, but there are a lot of lovely places and things to see, the student areas are fab, and there's a great music scene. Come and visit!

Yack02 · 10/10/2022 13:58

I love Hull, my family are from there so it has a special place in my heart!

AppleKatie · 10/10/2022 14:05

i love a positive hull thread. It is amazing. It is magical. Chip spice is revolting but you can just about mostly dodge that.

cheesy chips no chip spice
is the food of the gods.

AppleKatie · 10/10/2022 14:06

Theatre/Arts/music scene has always been brilliant.

working class bohemian is absolutely correct.

SallyWD · 10/10/2022 14:14

I live in Yorkshire. My DH has gone up Hull for a conference this week. Whenever I tell people he's in Hull they all laugh about what a dump it is. I'm sure it has its charms but it is very deprived and run down.

EachandEveryone · 10/10/2022 18:48

You need to go to open gardens down The Avenues if you think it’s deprived and run down. It’s very arty and it’s a brilliant area to live. Run down? Maybe on some of the estates but that’s not where a studebt will be hanging out.

Bubbles2022 · 10/10/2022 18:50

I live in Hull.

Like everywhere else there are places to be avoided.

But it's cheap. Some nice places to live and the area around the university is alright.

And yes, chip spice is life. It's amazing

UnalliterativeGeorge · 10/10/2022 18:55

Ah I miss Hull. Not many nights out can beat having a green monster in Spiders! DH gets chip spice posted to him by friends and family now we've moved away 😂

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 10/10/2022 19:08

I’m another Hull fan, the regeneration from City of Culture a few years ago has transformed it. In reminds me of a mini Bristol with the marina/fruit market development, The Minerva pub and Theiving Harry’s café, lovely little old town with cobbled streets with good pubs and streets like The Land of Green Ginger. The centre of the city has some nice spruced up Victorian architecture.

EeeByeGummieBear · 10/10/2022 19:16

I love Hull, and the Uni is great. Great place to be a student, thriving music scene, great pubs and clubs (Spiders, Welly). Lovely old buildings, interesting history. (Mainly) friendly people, near some wonderful countryside.
There are also parts I wouldn't go to after dark.
My DS is looking at the Uni there and I'm hoping he chooses it!

I’m loving this thread - I’m about to visit Hull for the first time for a couple of nights, thank you all for the tips!

Tink51971 · 10/10/2022 19:26

I live in hull also, the only advice I have is book in the premier inn near The Deep and spend a weekend here, Hull trains run a direct route to London as well as other big cities, or you can get a train or bus to the seaside resorts of Bridlington, Scarborough or Whitby. We have the bonus arena, hull city hall and a few other smaller venues for gigs, including a venue on the university campus. Newland avenue is a regular place for students and a lot of bars. The fruit market area is near to the marina and has also a few good places to eat and drink, we have places like Hammond of hull which is an upcoming place to eat trinity market which is also a popular eating place, quite a few cinemas. A short train or bus ride to the town of beverley is also a good place to visit and has a market on a Saturday. Finally there are a few bad places, but tell me a city that doesn’t..

Tink51971 · 10/10/2022 19:28

Forgot to add you have to try the Pattie and chip spice butties.😂

JustALittleHelpPlease · 10/10/2022 19:29

We're near Hull, personally I don't like it but lots and lots of my friends love it. - and fiercely defend it. It is, apparently, excellent for a night out - they'll hire a minibus to go and get back. It seems to be a really good student experience. The only thing they all agree on is that you can get some racist name calling - although not "trouble" as such.

ArnoldBee · 10/10/2022 19:31

We enjoy going for weekends to Hull - the marina and fruit market area is fab.

Now for your daughter I think it was York that bussed students to Hull as they didn't have enough accommodation but worth putting that on your things to find out list just to confirm the situation.

rainrainrain2012 · 17/01/2023 13:02

Is the pub Mint still there? Left hull in 2010

EastLondonObserver · 17/01/2023 13:06

It's good for Southerners to go to university in the North, especially in places like Hull, that are still a bit rough around the edges. They invariably enjoy it, and in doing so the various prejudices and cliches they've been exposed to about the North are weakened.

Otherwise we end up with more Tory types who merely went 'up' to Oxbridge and haven't got a clue about real life for most ordinary people. Liz Truss, of course, should have done, being from Leeds, but instead chose to make up a load of bilge about her former school.
