Please tell me about Hull!

DD is looking at Uni’s & one that offers a course she likes the look of is Hull. We live in London so I’m pretty clueless about what Hull is like (Google is not complementary, but then half the country think London’s a dump so that’s not much to go on!)
Most of the unis she’s looked at so far have been London/SE but we both think it might be good to look further afield (cost of living being an obvious advantage of moving away)
From her point of view she wants somewhere with a bit of life (nightlife in particular but also theatres & shops)
From a mum point of view I want somewhere reasonably safe (keep in mind we live in London so my idea of safe is not a little village!)

I lived there until recently.
It's probably a brilliant place to be a student as Hull is a nice green campus university and offsite accommodation is cheap.

Hull +

  • Cycleable
  • Lots of cheap and cheerful food and drink options in the Newland & Princes Avenue area (university location)
  • Loads of buses from the university to the town centre
  • amazing Old Town pubs with coal fires and great beers
  • great free museums including the Ferens Art Gallery
  • Vibrant live music and arts scene
  • Bonus Arena and other venues get some good bands and artists
  • Cool regenerated Fruit Market area near the Marina, it’s our Shoreditch on Humber 😂😂😂
  • friendly locals
  • direct train services to Leeds, Manchester and London
  • best fish and chips in the world, - perhaps a draw with Whitby.
  • a surprising amount of sunny days as it is east of the Pennines.
Hull -
  • a bit remote stuck at one end of the M62
  • shopping is crap (Leeds is great)
  • some depressed town centre streets
  • it doesn’t get the biggest gigs
  • some of the good restaurants have closed in the last 3 years
  • despite the relatively dry climate compared with the North West, it can feel bitter with the wind blowing down the Humber.
  • she’ll have to lock that bike up securely or it will get nicked. If she has a bike, get a knackered looking one but a first class lock.
  • although this has improved over the past 20 years, it’s still not very ethnically diverse for a city.

Ferens Art Gallery was one of my favourite places as a young person. It's much more ethnically diverse than it was in my youth. I remember when the first Chinese restaurant opened and people went, not because they knew anything about the food (though it had the added benefit of being cheap) but because they'd never seen a real Chinese person.
