Had to go out and just got back in and ds saying Truss been popping in out of the chamber???

Notonthestairs · 17/10/2022 17:37

NEW: Liz Truss was with Sir Graham Brady during Labour's urgent question in HoC - as per No 10 sources.

They tell me it was a pre-planned meeting - rather than crisis talks - but inevitable that lack of support among Tory MPs will have come up.

twitter.com/pippacrerar/status/1582047311789555720?s=46&t=nTOB_jaKM-93BiMo3BdDJA

Hhhmmm. Nice excuse.

Notonthestairs · 17/10/2022 17:39

Essentially she put her party before the country. Again.

tobee · 17/10/2022 17:41

You would have thought GB would have said "we'll make it another time". Plus why couldn't Mordaunt have said if it's all fine?

L1ttledrummergirl · 17/10/2022 17:43

Interesting excuse as he was in the chamber. Another lie from the tory government?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 17/10/2022 17:44

penny mordant is like most politicians, a self serving snake

Notonthestairs · 17/10/2022 17:45

Ah I don't know he was in the chamber. Wafer thing lie then.

It's pretty obvious now that she's been silenced by the party. I know they've said she'll do PMQs but I just can't see how that will happen.

Pretty outrageous all round. Truss for staying and accepting her puppet role. The Conservatives for thinking this is acceptable.

AutumnCrow · 17/10/2022 18:00

Mordaunt is letting her desperation for high office show a little too much now.

Notonthestairs · 17/10/2022 18:13

It's interesting reading bits & pieces on Twitter and elsewhere indicating Conservative voters think that Hunt has rescued the party. A semblance of normality.

I suppose he has achieved that in the short term.

But there are multiple factions that won't be content - the ERGers won't be happy to lose control of No 10, Braverman, Mordaunt etc will be agitating (12 weeks ago they thought they were the best people to lead the party). Hunt only received 8 votes in the first round. He'll be able to pull in support from some areas but how much? And there are the Johnsonians still hoping for him to return to the plough.

They'll paper over the cracks as best they can but how long can that last without an election?

Saucery · 17/10/2022 18:15

They’ll start fighting like rats in a sack as soon as the markets stabilise.

the80sweregreat · 17/10/2022 18:20

I don't trust Hunt though
He looks far too happy about more cut backs
He wasn't a great Health Secretary.
He came across better than she does , but it is all smoke and mirrors

newnamethanks · 17/10/2022 18:48

Is this how our Prime Ministers are going to behave now? Fuck up. Sack a mate and heap the blame on him. Skulk out of sight when you should be explaining yourself to colleagues and electorate having sent a minion in to talk for you. Then slink in to the Commons, slide onto the front bench and smirk without a word of apology or explanation? I feel very annoyed. To say the least.

ClaudineClare · 17/10/2022 18:55

He came across better than she does , but it is all smoke and mirrors

Agree. Also agree that if Truss was with GB why Mordaunt didn't just say that?

DuncinToffee · 17/10/2022 18:58

Had to go out after the frog kisser's flounce and missed the drama. Time to catch up.

Labour leads by 36%.

Largest lead for ANY party with ANY polling company since October 1997.

Westminster VI (16 Oct.):

Labour 56% (+3)
Conservative 20% (-4)
Lib Dems 11% (-2)
Green 5% (+2)
SNP 4% (–)
Reform UK 2% (–)
Other 1% (-2)

Changes +/- 13 Oct.

Shocking figures for Tories but Lib Dem’s are a disaster too - not picking up anything from this mess? There ought to be some hard questions being asked - this is their chance too and they aren’t taking advantage of it at all.

DuncinToffee · 17/10/2022 19:23

Compassionate conservative government, oh do fuck off Hunt.

TomPinch · 17/10/2022 19:24

@Wheresthebeach

I was a Lib Dem activist back in the days of St Paddy so my observations may be out of date.

The issue for the Lib Dems outside elections (except in the 2000s) was always lack of media coverage. So opinion polls tended to put the LD vote share low because people a) forgot about the LDs and b) answered on the basis of their preferred government, not on the actual options in their own constituency. It would therefore increase in election time, particularly as the party was very good at targeting key constituencies. Whether that's still true depends on whether the party has the membership it had then.

the80sweregreat · 17/10/2022 19:25

Mr Hunt reminds me of Mr Burns from the Simpsons. He would also make a good Scrooge too.
I don't trust him, but at least he spoke today and appeared calm and rational
The cut backs will be brutal though.

He came across very well during covid too.

I always found that astonishing after it was him that fucked up the nhs in the first place.

DuncinToffee · 17/10/2022 19:34

Downing Street unable to explain what Penny Mordaunt was talking about when she said Liz Truss had a "genuine reason" for not answering Labour's Urgent Question today. Instead they say it's reasonable for the PM not to answer UQs.

Hiding under the desk it was then.

Truss feeling well enough to host the One Nation reception.

Since the government has recently had success cutting private pensions, it would only be fair if public sector pensions were similarly cut.

They've lost their chance. Thank god
