Where to stay in London for a gig in Twickenham Stadium

Could anyone recommend an area for London where it's easy to get to Twickenham stadium.

We don't know Twickenham at all and we always stay in the Euston area when we visit London as we find it's easy to get there from Luton airport but we're open to flying to other airports and staying in other areas.

Waterloo has trains to twickenham, they go through Clapham junction which would be cheaper for hotels. Both easy to get to from Euston tooZ

Or are you wanting to stay nearer the stadium?

I did lots of research into this at the weekend as I've bought DD tickets to the Womens six nations match there.

I settled on the Premier Inn in Richmond, theres a bus stop outside which takes you there and a South Western/ district line station from central London fairly nearby. Its close to Kew Gardens for a day out and well get a bus to Hampton Court. Seemed like a safe area and relatively easy to get too from Liverpool Street which is where well be coming in from.

There were many lovely hotels if you have a bigger budget in Teddington which seemed to have good public transport links. Or there were other Premier Inns or Travel Lodges. There is also a hotel in Twickenham stadium which was a bit expensive on match day but might be cheaper for a gig.

You definitely don’t want to fly to Luton for Twickenham unless you really can’t avoid it! Heathrow is the closest airport in terms of distance but Gatwick can be easy via train with a change at Clapham Junction. There’s a premier inn in Twickenham, or are you making a weekend of it and want somewhere more central? If yes then around Waterloo is probably a good shout since it’s a quick direct train. You could also stay around Clapham Junction which would be cheaper and just a bit further out.

Richmond is lovely .. you can get on the train there and it's one stop to Twickenham .. lots of lovely bars and restaurants in both areas.. Teddington js nice but Richmond is literally a few mins on the train and also buses run regularly outside the station to Twick and the stadium .. I don't know how expensive it is but the hotel at the stadium looks good .. also anywhere on the overland train would be a short trip to Twickenham so: Kew and Barnes too ..

Ok that's good to know that Luton isn't our best airport.

Ideally it would be good to stay in Twickenham as then it's easy to get back after the gig but there doesn't seem to be many hotels. There's a Premier Inn and I think a travel lodge but they don't have availability. It's next June but I'd like to get something booked before everywhere puts their prices up! I saw the hotel at the stadium and it's £299 which is a bit out our budget!

I'm just looking up Clapham Junction and it seems fairly easy to get there from Gatwick? And Clapham Junction to Twickenham Stadium seems to be about 30 mins or so?

Yup direct train from Gatwick to CJ, takes about 25 mins. CJ to Twickenham is only 13 mins on a fast train though, middling ones are like 20 mins and 30ish would be a slow one. They go really frequently too. So I’d say it’s a good place to base yourself.

HappyHamsters · 04/10/2022 15:38

I stayed at the Richmond Premier Inn, thank goodness i did, Twickenham station decided to close half an hour before the end of the concert so it was a good 4 miles walk back.

Plump82 · 04/10/2022 15:38

That sounds perfect!! I'm glad I asked as I'd never have known to look places like that.
Now to actually manage to get tickets for the gig!

Lots of lovely hotels in Richmond. But I don't know your budget. Also the Lensbury in Teddington. Any of those options you can use a bus to get to the stadium. Or even walk tbh

HappyHamsters · 04/10/2022 15:43

Its also an easy trip from Heathrow. Tube from airport to hounslow then bus to the stadium and airport hotels are often cheaper. Who are you seeing.

This might be a daft question but do busses run late enough for us to get back after the gig.
Depeche Mode are playing.

Is Richmond walkable to the stadium. See this is my nightmare. I hate public transport at the best of times. The last time we saw Depeche Mode we stayed right in next to the stadium they were playing in which was so handy.

Yeah you could walk to Richmond, it would be like 45 minutes down the main road. There will no doubt be a bus too if you’re knackered and/or it’s raining!

We don't mind walking. That's good to know for another option. Would flying to Heathrow be best for Richmond.

Heathrow to Richmond is doable on the tube with a change at Hammersmith.
Gatwick is just as easy on the train with a change at Clapham Junction.
Gatwick probably slightly quicker but not significantly enough to pay more for it so I’d personally go with whatever is cheapest and/or has the best flight times.

cupidsabsolutepsyche · 04/10/2022 16:06

Oh OP isn't it exciting! I'm crossing everything for a ticket!

I'm familiar with the area, and agree that Richmond would be good if you can book somewhere there. The 110 bus goes from Richmond station to right near Twickenham stadium and takes around half an hour. Alternatively, if everything is either booked or expensive, have a look at staying in Kingston. Good luck!

Notjusta · 04/10/2022 16:06

Yes to Heathrow for Richmond, but it's also fairly easy if you fly in to Gatwick as you get the train from Gatwick to Clapham then Clapham to Richmond. I think Richmond will be a much nicer place to stay than Clapham Junction.

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 04/10/2022 16:08

Definitely stay in Twickenham if you can. If the trains are striking it can be a nightmare due to the number of people trying to get home too.

I'm really struggling to find anything in Twickenham.

Easyjet is only showing to April but Gatwick is looking cheaper.

Actually just realised I was comparing Gatwick prices with Luton! And can't actually fly to Heathrow from here so that's the decision made on where we're flying to.

I live in Twickenham. Have you tried the Alexander Pope?

trillionnaireshortbread · 04/10/2022 16:36

There are two premier inns.
Also, try searching for hotels in Whitton.

The Alexander Pope and The Premier Inns are sold out for the dates I need.

You can also walk to isleworth and Brentford from twickenham stadium.
Busses run until 1.30 in london, but immediately after a concert are difficult to get on.
