Your favourite, or most relatable, depiction of motherhood on TV/Film?

Yeah the title probably needs work but I've had 2 hours sleep. I'm having a crappy day. All the normal motherhood stuff. I'm sitting in the pharmacy, about to collect an incomplete prescription for DS and suddenly thought about the many mothers on TV, and how they are each portrayed to the different audiences.

I think at the moment, Lois from Malcolm in the Middle the most is the most relatable. I need more sleep (or rather, I need my sons to sleep!) before I can think of a favourite lol.

Better Things (though older kids)

HiGunny · 03/10/2022 18:04

Definitely Outnumbered. All those toys on the stairs and bedtime struggles. Plus sending your kids to the post box is a great trick 😂

Refrosty · 03/10/2022 18:13

Okay so obviously I need to crawl out from my rock and watch Outnumbered 😁

Elena’s relationship with her mother often surprised me into tears while watching all the seasons of My Brilliant Friend. Definitely not pretty, but hugely affecting.

Derry Girls and Sex Education both have brilliant mothers!

Motherland

CaveMum · 03/10/2022 18:25

Ease yourself in with this @Refrosty, from one of the later series but gives a good idea all the same!

I love The Letdown too.

Lynette in Desperate Housewives, especially in the earlier seasons.

Motherland. I could be Julia

Love Actually

Tully with Charlize Theron. Really captured the rawness of the newborn phase and the mind-altering torture that is sleep-deprivation and I'm sure accurately captured the struggles of balancing looking after multiple DC. I'll soon find out as currently pregnant with DC2 😬

Somuchgoo · 19/11/2022 20:16

Bluey!

I have two girls with a similar age gap, and my husband reminds me of Bandit a lot. I'm not sure I'm cool enough to be Chilli, but things like the take away episode get parenthood down to a tee.

seeyouinanotherlifewhenwearebothcats · 19/11/2022 20:17

I second Frankie Heck from The Middle 👏🏻 can totally relate to her.

savehannah · 19/11/2022 20:19

@Hmmph oh yes! One of the bits that always makes me cry is Emma Thompson putting on a brave face and being all excited about the nativity play for the sake of the kids when her world has just fallen apart.

cherry2727 · 19/11/2022 20:20

Certainly motherland !!

legalalien · 19/11/2022 20:23

I second Love Actually. It doesn’t mirror my personal experience but I could entirely empathise with how the character felt.

HouseFullOfChaos · 19/11/2022 20:33

I third Frankie Heck. Best & most realistic TV mum around and IMO best family TV comedy ever.
