Your favourite, or most relatable, depiction of motherhood on TV/Film?

Yeah the title probably needs work but I've had 2 hours sleep. I'm having a crappy day. All the normal motherhood stuff. I'm sitting in the pharmacy, about to collect an incomplete prescription for DS and suddenly thought about the many mothers on TV, and how they are each portrayed to the different audiences.

I think at the moment, Lois from Malcolm in the Middle the most is the most relatable. I need more sleep (or rather, I need my sons to sleep!) before I can think of a favourite lol.

Tully. I actually cried because it was so relatable.

Maid

I loved that show so much.

Tully made me cry to. When I saw it my own little boy’s SEN were obvious but undiagnosed so her struggles with that felt so raw and real.

Motherland for sure

Needhelp101 · 19/11/2022 21:57

Another vote for Motherland.

Even my male, childless best friend loved it!

Oh me too. I was in tears. The mother daughter bond was just so brutally and beautifully done!

Oblomov22 · 19/11/2022 22:15

I can't think of any programme that covers it very well.

I'm surprised so many posters are saying Motherland. Julia is a well written character. She's actually really very unpleasant. I can't relate to her at all and don't know anyone that dippy.

Jake's Progress with Robert Lindsay

catinboots123 · 19/11/2022 22:21

Sorry should have said not my favourite but very relatable

Interesting. I’ve only watched a few episodes; I found it very funny and the scrapes that Julia gets into are somewhat relatable, but I felt like her character’s intentions were cobbled together from Mumsnet tropes; the shitty, unsupportive husband, her conviction that her mum should be doing all her childcare etc.

Anyone else seen the 2018 film 'Puzzle'?

Sometimes I think of the opening scene when I read certain threads on MN. It's kinda heartbreaking.

Stopsnowing · 20/11/2022 04:43

What I find relatable about Julia is her constant inner seething about the crap motherhood throws at you like endless pointless school events

God, I loved Jane Kaczamarek as Lois in Malcom in the Middle. Actually loved all of that programme, the shoddy house, the realism, the ND son (or two) the money worries. Far more realistic than most schmaltzy family dramas, yet still funny.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 20/11/2022 23:27

Motherland. 100%. So relatable but also sad and funny in equal measure

EmmiJay · 20/11/2022 23:31

Motherland- I could be Liz minus the freezing everything.

SuperGinger · 21/11/2022 04:12

I found the stereotypes in Motherland unbearable it was just one big cliché

user9863233444446788 · 21/11/2022 05:18

Motherland. Motherland. Motherland.

@Hmmph oh yes! One of the bits that always makes me cry is Emma Thompson putting on a brave face and being all excited about the nativity play for the sake of the kids when her world has just fallen apart.

Yes this. I had to do this on Christmas Day when my husband had walked out the night before leaving me with two children under 2.

Yes. Liz is so pragmatic, no pretentions. And her dry humour, the only way to cope.

nophonesonbed · 21/11/2022 05:35

An older one here but Kate from Kate and Allie. She seemed so cool.

OMG Thank you! I thought I was alone in this! I'm amazed at the love on here.
We - DH, DD and I - watched a couple of episodes recently. None of us particularly liked it. It had its funny moment here and there but was so clichéd, overblown, exaggerated and caricatured.

I also liked Lois from MITM: brutal, taking no crap from her sons (or husband) but also fiercely loving them.

lucysnowe2 · 21/11/2022 09:30

There She Goes is sooo relatable with regards to looking after a non-NT child! The A Word not so much but that's just me.

I love Motherland too but def relate more to Liz or Anne than Julia.

God, I love Lois.

Apparently when she went to audition for the role she had full blown flu and had dragged herself out of bed looking like a bag of rags and they gave her the part because she really looked authentic 🤣

TangoBrava · 21/11/2022 09:49

Jennifer Anniston in Marley and Me.

I saw it at the cinema with my husband, one older child, and a baby, and when she started talking about how hard being a mother was sometimes, I cried real sobs 😔

TrentCrimm · 21/11/2022 09:52

Not quite motherhood, but first time watching Happy Valley, Sarah Lancashire picks up her grandson from primary school and asks him 'what did you have for your dinner?'

In my head, I instantly thought 'if this was real life, the kid would say he can't remember'

The kid replied 'Can't remember!'

I was impressed Grin
