Address says Wigan but we’re not in Wigan?

Does anybody know why our address near Parbold in West Lancashire says Wigan? We’re nowhere near Wigan so it seems really strange.

it comes under the county of west lancs but its post town is wigan as donkeys years ago it was wigan district

Parbold is Wigan. IMO up to about burscough it’s Wigan, then scousers.

Mine automatically comes up as Lancashire, but it's been in Greater Manchester since 1974.

Parbold is Naice though so I can understand why you don’t want to be classed as Wigan 😬

I think postcodes are all over the place around here. I'm Lowton and live within the Wigan Borough but have a Warrington postcode.

I live in a village but my nearest town is included in the address.

We have similar where we live because of old postal code areas (i pay my council tax to x city but the system says I live in z city). It occasionally gets questioned when I do an online form but I just alter it to what it does accept and I've never had anything not turn up.

Wigan will be your post town, which is a required part of your address that Royal Mail uses to make sure mail gets to the right place. Pre-2004 the post town is where the delivery office that all your post was routed through was located. After modernising that system, Royal Mail retained post towns as part of addresses to help distinguish between street and town names that appear in more than one place in the UK, especially where the postcode has been omitted.

I live in Nottinghamshire but my address is Derby. It’s just to do with postal towns.

I live in a little hamlet. Our nearest village and nearest town are included in our address.

I think it's called a 'Post Town.'

I have a Bristol postcode (starting BS) and our postal town is Bristol.
Our landline has a Bristol dialling code.
Our health authority is Bath
Our Local authority is Bath and North East Somerset. (Bristol is a county in its own right).
Our MP constituency is North East Somerset (JRM is our MP).
We live in neither Bath nor Bristol but somewhere in between.
...and once upon a time we were in Wansdyke or County of Avon.

Altrincham is often listed as Cheshire on postal addresses. Its Trafford. Some people refuse to change it on addresses. Historically it was in Cheshire.

To further confuse matters its part of the Warrington postal district. Its postcode starts WA14. The WA14 postcode actually covers areas within Trafford, Warrington and Cheshire East.

Sometimes Boundaries clash I used to live Stoneclough which had a manchester postcode ,bolton telephone number but was officially under Radcliffe 😱

I know someone living in a lovely part of Manchester, yet their postcode is Warrington !

Where I live is the same, the postal town for our village isn't our closest town. We live in a different county to our postal town. It causes issues every time we use our closest hospital because our address reads:
STREET
POSTAL TOWN
POSTCODE

There's a hospital in the postal town so every time we're at our closest hospital in a different town they ask why we don't use the hospital in our postal town. When I had DD they delayed our discharge as they said we were out of the area so the newborn checks had to be done before we left rather than at home. It was only when I was leaving I mentioned about the midwives and I was told off as we weren't out of the area so these checks could've been done the following day at home. They tried it again when I had DS.

You have a WN postcode so in postal terms that's Wigan. Mind you, so does Skem and that's not Wigan either.

Skelmersdale also has a WN postcode but is actually in West Lancashire. I’m in West Lancashire and have a L (Liverpool) postcode. Southport is in Merseyside but has a PR (Preston) postcode. Think they’ve changed boundaries over time but not the postcodes.

My dh works in Westhoughton it has a Wigan telephone number and I thinkna postcode but officially come ,s under bolton ,I think we all cling to Lancashire even though most of is have been under Greater Manchester for years 🤣

Try living here... Our postcode puts us in a different country 🤣

So we are considered English for some things and Welsh for others. Pay council tax in one country but have to use NHS services in another.

It a real pain in the arse.

But doesn't Warrington officially come under Cheshire?Bless it 🤣
