Let’s talk bagels

So inspired by my previous thread, all this talk of bagels got me wondering how everyone likes their bagels?

Im looking for inspiration on what I can put on my bagels.

So savoury bagels I like cream cheese with bacon (I love smoked salmon too but DH hates it and I would struggle to eat a whole pack myself).

The sweet cinnamon ones I just put butter on, I’m not sure what else I can do with them.

Whats your favourite bagel topping for both savoury and sweet bagels??

Love sesame bagels!!
BLAT
Or
ham, lettuce, avo, tomatoes.

I'm going to get the cinnamon ones tomorrow, have never tried them!

Vampirethriller · 01/10/2022 17:57

That pineapple and nut cream cheese in a ring- can't remember what it's called. Or just butter.

Harrystylestutu · 01/10/2022 17:57

Yes salt beef, cheese, gherkins, mustard! The best!

Toasted sesame bagel with houmous, avocado, sliced tomatoes, cucumber and red onion. Don't really do sweet, much prefer savoury.

Vegay · 01/10/2022 18:15

@Geranium1984 I'm so going to try a This isn't Bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayo bagel. Never thought of a BLT bagel.

Since the last decent Jewish bakery round here closed, I’ve stopped buying them. Nothing can beat a crispy on the outside, soft on the inside bagel with the unique taste that makes it not taste like any other bread product. Those New York ones are nothing like a genuine bagel, But if I had a local source of decent bagels I’d go for cream cheese, smoked salmon and a pickled cucumber. Or chopped herring with pickled cucumber.

emmathedilemma · 01/10/2022 18:18

This is my local bagel shop for menu inspiration, they’re amazing!! www.brossbagels.com/menu
smoked salmon keeps in the fridge once open, just wrap it up well or it’ll stink the fridge out

Smoked ham with cream cheese

Pedallleur · 01/10/2022 19:08

My local deli sells 3000 bagels on a Sunday. Has a special deal on that involves bagels, cream cheese, smoked salmon. Plus a great deli selection all made on the premises. Let's Fress in Prestwich.

Love the traditional smoked salmon and cream cheese. I like the cinnamon and raisin ones toasted with a little butter one. I also like the plain ones toasted with some smooth liver pate on it.

Sounds like heaven. Our last proper Jewish bakery used to start selling them when Sabbath had ended on Saturday. Nothing like a warm bagel hot off the press. For a city with a reasonably sized Jewish community, it's pretty poor show there's nowhere to get a good, authentic bagel.

supertato32 · 01/10/2022 19:27

Have you had try bacon and scallion cream cheese (spring onion)! Google a recipe... it's decadent and divine!

chipshopElvis · 01/10/2022 19:31

Butter and biscoff spread on the cinnamon ones!

Shebelievedshecouldbutshecba · 01/10/2022 19:59

Butter and Bovril!

@Myotherdogsaballboy the best bagels are from a true Jewish bakery! Along with the challah and onion platzels! I traditional Jewish Bagel is perfection

I have to agree. They’re what I’ve grown up eating but over the years the little Jewish bakeries have shut down leaving just the one. But there is no way on earth what they are producing is in any way the real deal. I do miss a warm, fresh proper bagel. If I was any good at baking I’d have a go at making them myself but I can’t make regular bread that’s edible so this is probably beyond my level of capability.

If I am in London, I make a trip to the Biegel shop at Brick Lane for a dozen biegels and a salt beef, pickle and mustard one to eat there and then.

I slice them and freeze them individually for those moments when you need something. I fill them with salami and cheese, smoked salmon and cream cheese, salt beef and pickles, cheese and onion or cheese and mustard.

bippityboppity87 · 01/10/2022 21:55

Boring but a firm favourite of mine; Toasted with cream cheese and smoked salmon. Sometimes I might add some rocket

bippityboppity87 · 01/10/2022 21:58

Also ham, cream cheese and a couple of dots of French's mustard, toasted

DelilahBucket · 01/10/2022 22:01

Smoked salmon, scambled eggs and chives is my favourite but unfortunately I can't eat bagels anymore as I'm allergic to a preservative in processed bread and I haven't found a bagel that hasn't got it in 🙄

specialk9 · 01/10/2022 22:09

Love them with just butter.

Toasted with cheese and coleslaw.

Cream cheese and cucumber.

Tuna mayo and spring onion.

If they're freshly cooked from a Jewish bakery I'd just eat them plain

Tickledpickled · 01/10/2022 22:12

Toasted cinnamon bagel with butter and blueberry jam

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 01/10/2022 22:44

Having grown up in the East End and known proper authentic beigels (note correct spelling), to me supermarket bagels are a very poor substitute.

steppingout · 01/10/2022 22:56

This has reminded me of a bagel combo I used to love - melted cheese on one side, houmous on the other, salad (lettuce, cucumber, tomato) in the middle. Delicious. I'd also go cream cheese on a cinnamon raisin bagel.

JingsMahBucket · 01/10/2022 23:01

@Myotherdogsaballboy @supertato32 @Pedallleur and others who have real bagel places around you, do you know of any bagel bakeries that will deliver frozen bagels around the country? I'd love to stock up on a dozen bagels at time or more.
