Help, I think I went through a red light. What happens next?

Is it a fine and points on licence too? It was one of those stop quick or keep going situations. I kept going but it was on the red I think. Freaking out. Please help. Is there an option to do a course instead of points for this sort of thing?

Nothing if you weren’t caught. There are very few red light cameras in the country, you’d have likely seen a flash. I wouldn’t worry, I think most people do this accidentally at least once

PuttingDownRoots · 26/09/2022 16:35

Probably nothing. Unless you know it has a camera, just be more careful in future

girlmom21 · 26/09/2022 16:36

As the others have said you probably won't get caught.

Usually goes to amber so you have some warning…
never done it myself but generally no cameras on lights so unless police saw you do it you’ll be fine..

SandysMam · 26/09/2022 16:37

I think you thank your lucky stars you didn’t kill anyone, accept the fine and make sure you don’t do it again. Probably nothing will happen ticket wise but it could have been so much worse so try to turn it around to a lucky thing rather than feeling worried about it. You got away with the most important bit.

GreenManalishi · 26/09/2022 16:38

Probably nothing but you'll soon find out

It definitely had a camera unfortunately. So annoyed at myself. Never had this happen before.

Most likely nothing will come of it at all Flowers

Did it flash? Are you sure it wasn't a traffic sensor?

earsup · 26/09/2022 16:50

the little square cameras are for traffic flow monitoring etc..not for fines...the big round ones cover the yellow box junction near me....did you see a larger camera ?

gatehouseoffleet · 26/09/2022 17:39

Even if there was a camera it would depend if you crossed on amber into red, or purely red. Don't worry about it until you hear something in the post. I think it's a fixed penalty fine so you don't go to court. £200 plus 3 points or something like that. I don't know if there's a course option, but assuming you've not done anything else wrong, 3 points is ok - wait 3 years and they've gone.

Of course, insurance goes up too.

WindmillsOfMyMind12 · 26/09/2022 18:06

It was like this. I was in the middle lane

I bet nothing x

SummerHouse · 26/09/2022 18:14

That's a speed camera I think so unless you were speeding, you are good.

Mouseaboutthehouse · 26/09/2022 18:17

That's just a speed camera? I didn't even know red light cameras existed. Don't worry. I don't get the hysteria, I'm surprised some people are saying they've never done it (unintentionally).

shinynewapple22 · 26/09/2022 18:17

I doubt anything will come of it . Not worth worrying about anyway - if you do get a notice through the post you'll just have cross that bridge when it happens - not with worrying unnecessarily though .

Bestcatmum · 26/09/2022 18:18

I've done it a good few times and nothing happened.

Pourmeanotherwine · 26/09/2022 18:24

DH got caught by a red light camera once. Got a fine and some points.

Entwifery · 26/09/2022 18:32

Straight to prison 🙄

impressivelycunty · 26/09/2022 18:35

I've done it once. And got caught on a camera- 3 points and a £100 fine. Points lasted for 4 years and 5 for insurance purposes.

clarepetal · 26/09/2022 18:39

I did it by accident once, shat my pants and nothing came of it. Hopefully you'll be OK. X

Notanotherwindow · 26/09/2022 18:41

The yellow camera is a speed camera, it doesn't monitor the lights. Traffic light cameras are large, round and usually suspended over the center of the junction.

Rockingcloggs · 26/09/2022 18:41

I got lost on my way home from hospital last December. I was that stupid panicking about being lost that I didn't even know I went through a set of lights let alone a light on red. I didn't know until a letter came through my letterbox telling me. Three points and a fine. All my own fault and it could have been much worse. I only passed my test last September at 38 years old and already on 3 points. I drive now with eyes on stalks (as I should have done anyway but....).

Fingers crossed it goes no further.

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 26/09/2022 18:48

Unless you were speeding or just kept driving/ sped up when you saw amber, you probably did the right thing in not slamming on the lights. You might have seen the red light in front of you telling the cars not already on the junction to stop.

SarahShorty · 26/09/2022 18:50

Nah, you'll be fine.
