Help, I think I went through a red light. What happens next?

Is it a fine and points on licence too? It was one of those stop quick or keep going situations. I kept going but it was on the red I think. Freaking out. Please help. Is there an option to do a course instead of points for this sort of thing?

Have also done this and nothing happened

The yellow camera is a speed camera, it doesn't monitor the lights. Traffic light cameras are large, round and usually suspended over the center of the junction.

There are also traffic light cameras like the yellow one in the picture the OP posted, all the ones I have seen in London look like that.

If you are charged, accept the outcome with a good grace, and perhaps ask for leniency because of no previous offences.

It depends if you sped up to get through, that's what those cameras measure.

I went through a red light on two separate occasions when pregnant. Never done it before or since and totally didn't even see they were on red! Baby brain is definitely a thing! I was lucky I didn't a) injure anyone or b) get caught.

WonderingWanda · 26/09/2022 19:06

I disagree I think that is a light's camera. Likely you will get a fine and 3 points op!

Somanysocks · 26/09/2022 19:09

Wouldn't a speed camera have those white lines on the road to measure the speed, I can't see any of those?

Madeintowerhamlets · 26/09/2022 19:09

I’ve done the same & nothing happened so you’ll probably be fine.

Charlavail · 26/09/2022 20:05

I did it during a driving test 🙃

whatdoidonowffs · 26/09/2022 20:16

Light and speed camera no flash no problem 👍

MrsMacnair · 26/09/2022 20:18

That does look light a Red light camera as it’s facing the lights and in the same direction that you are travelling. It will only activate when the red light goes on and will catch anybody going through once triggered. Speed cameras are usually facing the oncoming traffic.
They’re both yellow and look the same but the positioning (usually) tells you which one it’s likely to be.

Sorry Op looks like it will be 3 points and £100 fine. Not sure if they offer the course for running a red though.

Quartz2208 · 26/09/2022 20:23

DH did it at Christmas and the letter came through within 2 weeks - choice of points/fine or a more expensive course option. He did the course which was then (might have changed now) online so much easier!

MrsMacnair · 26/09/2022 20:45

If you want to check which type of camera it was you can go onto the website SCDB.info and it will give you all the locations and type of camera at each one for the whole of the uk.

KendrickLamaze · 26/09/2022 21:05

Absolute worst case is £100 fine and 3 points. It used to be that you had to tell them you were driving on one letter and accept the fine on another with 28 days to respond to each. If this is the case, make the process take over two paydays so it's £50 a month. It might be that you just log in, accept responsibility and pay now. If it's a lease car you might get an admin fee on top.

It's not a big deal (unless you cause an accident of course but then you would have seen the cars coming and stopped surely?!) and almost everyone has done it at some point.

girlmom21 · 27/09/2022 08:09

Speed cameras are yellow - that's a speed camera.

If it was a camera for the lights there'd have been signs.

gatehouseoffleet · 27/09/2022 13:30

I think it's a camera for the lights, it would be a very odd place to have a speed camera.

But you might still be ok. Anyway, assuming no other points unlike our dear old Queen's funeral and King's coronation organiser, worst case scenario is fine, 3 points and increased insurance. Come back and let us know!

ginandbearit · 27/09/2022 13:35

I got done by 1 second coming up the A3 lights ..been offered online safety awareness course in lieu of points and or fine ..you'll be ok .

Yes so are red light cameras, so easy to confuse the two.

Also not always signposted. Dh got caught driving a red light several years ago on his way to work. He had absolutely no idea that there was a camera there despite doing that same route day in and day out.

He checked that location afterwards and it definitely wasn’t signposted.
