If you won 500k.. how would you spend it?

I have a mortgage of just under 300k, so I think I’d probably pay that off. As our house needs renovating, a further 200k could easily be swallowed up there. That’d be it - gone! Wouldn’t take long 😮
How would you spend it?

I’d buy both my kids a flat, do a major extension on n my house and landscape garden, and bung what’s left in savings.

reesewithoutaspoon · 25/09/2022 19:52

Help both kids on the property ladder, start a pension fund for both so they can benefit from compound interest on it. Pay my mums energy bills so she doesn't have to worry about putting the heating on and give my niece and nephew money for a nice holiday, anything left add to my savings to help in retirement.

Pay off mortgage = £60,000
Get new carpets = £2000
New kitchen = £30,000
New fence = £5000
Roof repairs = £2000
New bathroom =£20,000
Decorating =£5000
Holiday = £10,000
Helping a struggling friend = £10,000
Donations to charities = £30,000
Buy a campervan or motorhome = £100,000

Save rest/£226,000 for retirement.

Pay off everything we owe, including the mortgage - £100K
Give DSS the deposit for a flat/house - £50K
Fund the years until I can take my pension without reduction - £75K
Renovate our house - £50K
Go back to our honeymoon destination for a holiday - £10K
Save the rest

Sunnytwobridges · 25/09/2022 20:15

Is pay off my house and my student loans. I need a lot of work done around the house too so that would leave me with about 200k. I’d prob take another 50k to buy a car and go on a trip. Then sit on the rest of it

imnotthatkindofmum · 25/09/2022 20:20

Mortgage, new car, new flooring, new bed. Prob a family holiday.

Silverpossum · 25/09/2022 20:23

Pay off mortgage and buy a rental property with a view to retiring earlier than currently planned.

Questionaboutjoboffer · 25/09/2022 20:31

I would upgrade quite a lot of the house, pay for my children’s university fees, buy a cheap holiday bolt hole in Italy, go on holiday, get my teeth straightened, put some into a pension, save some.

Kualma · 25/09/2022 20:51

Add it to my pension, treat myself to a car and put it towards future child's school fees

MargaretThursday · 25/09/2022 20:56

Ooh! Love dreaming like this.

Ideally: Pay off mortgage and have some of the repairs done on the house that are needed. Nice to have an extension-I want a library and craft room. Maybe convert the garage!
Then divide the rest among the dc with strict instructions it's for deposit for a house.

Toddlerteaplease · 25/09/2022 21:07

Pay off the mortgage, pay off the car. Do some work on the house and garden.

mamaduckbone · 25/09/2022 21:09

A really stunning extension on the house and landscaping of the garden.
A holiday
A camper van
A whole new wardrobe

I actually wouldn't, probably, because I'm no good at spending money (especially on myself, so the clothes wouldn't happen). But it's nice to dream.

Bearsan · 25/09/2022 21:09

Buy another rental property.
Set aside £20k each for gc.
50k each to DC.
Spend the rest on more holidays.

Mooossssif · 25/09/2022 21:11

Pay off mortgage, upgrade to bungalow and first class seats for 4/5 to Australia - and then maybe vegas or San Fran

1dayatatime · 25/09/2022 21:14

Pay it against the mortgage with maybe keeping a bit back to treat myself to a bumper bar of Galaxy.

Annoyed200722 · 25/09/2022 21:20

Reduce down our mortgage & build the extension we need

emptylandscape · 25/09/2022 21:27

Pay off mortgage, car, new kitchen, that would leave £250k which I'd invest.

Cupofteaonesugar · 25/09/2022 21:28

I would buy a house for me and my boys to live in and pay off my mum and dads personal credit ☺️

midsomermurderess · 25/09/2022 21:31

I own my flat but would sell it and use about £150k to buy a new one, preferably ground floor as my knees and hip are a bit gippy. I'd save the rest.

Abcdefgh1234 · 25/09/2022 21:37

£50000 to pay off my first house mortgage
£100000 to pay off my buy to let mortgage (my second house)
£50000 to buy range rover
£300000 to buy another houses to let

🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂

rhowton · 25/09/2022 21:49

I'd buy 4/5 BLT houses, do them up, and then re mortgage and buy some more.

SkirridHill · 25/09/2022 21:51
  • Buy a house with a decent garden, enough space for a good greenhouse and treehouse for DD
  • New car
  • Amazing holiday for me and DD
  • Pay off debts
userxx · 25/09/2022 21:56

A lovely bigger home.

stillherenow · 25/09/2022 22:00

I'd buy a detached house with a big garden somewhere really rural.

Or, I'd get a new patio and this house decorated and a new kitchen and new flooring put in. And be v annoying and buy a second home somewhere lovely.

But I think I'd move to a house with a wonderful garden for the dog😀

stillherenow · 25/09/2022 22:02

Oh no scrap that I'd retire .
