If you won 500k.. how would you spend it?

I have a mortgage of just under 300k, so I think I’d probably pay that off. As our house needs renovating, a further 200k could easily be swallowed up there. That’d be it - gone! Wouldn’t take long 😮
How would you spend it?

I live in a 3 bed HA house, I'd like to buy similar but 500k wouldn't get me one.
I could look into buying this one maybe??

Otherwise, hire a painter/decorator to completely re do the house nicely.
Upgrade household appliances.

Newer bigger car to fit everyone and everything in.

Pay for driving lessons/tests for older dc.

Holiday abroad for us all, DC have never been abroad.

Put some in DC savings accounts.

WLS for me and friend.

Latenightreader · 25/09/2022 17:39

I’d buy a house. At the moment my budget means that I’m going to have to move a fair distance and uproot my DD from her friends, and am having to go through the farce of applying for a primary school for her when I know we will have to move and I really don’t want to. £500K would mean I could afford to live where we are at the moment (staying with a relative but that will end when I am finally able to sell my house next year), plus put some savings aside for the future. It would make all the difference in the world.

Zippedydoo123 · 25/09/2022 17:41

Mortgage free and 60 next year so early retirement for me! I wd also buy a cheap terraced house for ds to eventually leave home and move into.

MrsRhodes · 25/09/2022 17:42

I live in the north so could buy a good sized house, a new car for me and DH (1 each) and pay off debts (14k ) am a ery nice holiday.

VictoriaSpongePlease · 25/09/2022 17:45

Buy a bigger house. We are mortgage free in our 3 bed but are bursting at the seems. I'd get a 4/5 bed with more room.

FuriousFurious · 25/09/2022 17:46

Bigger house. We are a bit squeezed here too.

Scoundrella · 25/09/2022 17:49

Buy a bigger house outright (lucky to live in a cheaper part of the south west). Use some to fix up our current house and sell it. Would split the money from that into 3 so
our children have a chunk of savings each.

hopefully have a bit left to open some savings accounts for niece and nephew and then just keep the rest in savings just in case

Kite22 · 25/09/2022 18:05

Buy a new electric family car for DP (he can drive, I can’t). No idea - £15k

I think you would be looking upwards of £25K Smile

Fridaysgirl17 · 25/09/2022 18:12

I'd buy a house some decent ones around me,near my son's school around €300,000,that would include furniture etc. I'd pop €25,000 in savings for my 2 son's & for me too. I need some dental work done that would be extensive & I'd ideally go private for that. Do my driving lessons & test & buy a nice family car & then some nice days out for my kids & i,as a single mother always trying to budget that would be nice 😀

Tulipomania · 25/09/2022 18:13

Pay off mortgage.

Get the house re-decorated.

If there was any left, go away for a luxury mini-break in UK.

QueueEtwo · 25/09/2022 18:15

I'm 55 I would retire!

Seriou · 25/09/2022 18:16

A year sabbatical £50k
Mortgage pay off £300k
Mum’s mortgage pay off £50k
The whole of Jan/Feb 2023 in the Maldives £30k
Horsebox £40k (secondhand)
Cruise Winter 2023 with whatever’s left 😁

Needmorelego · 25/09/2022 18:18

House
Car
Driving lessons for the car
Season train ticket so he can still get to work from where I would buy a house
Rest in the bank for my daughter

Needmorelego · 25/09/2022 18:18

Season ticket for my husband I meant to say.

TokyoSushi · 25/09/2022 18:18

Mortgage, pension, mega bonanza holiday!

Auntieobem · 25/09/2022 18:19

Pay off mortgage and redecorate. Get garden landscaped. That'd leave about £340k. Deposit for house for DB, don't know what I'd do with the rest....

PermanentTemporary · 25/09/2022 18:19

Go part time. Pay my mother in law's nursing home fees so my father in law can stop worrying.

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/09/2022 18:19

Pay off balance of mortgage, give £100 k to both of the kids and put the rest in the bank for time being.

dizzydizzydizzy · 25/09/2022 18:21

Would spend £300k on a 2-bed flat (so could separate from 'D'P, £5k on a holiday and invest £195 for my old age.

GenialHarryGr0ut · 25/09/2022 18:29

Pension
Dental work
Work on house - that would probably take a fifth of the money
New to us car
Maybe early retirement in about 5 years

Nadal · 25/09/2022 18:29

I'd buy a house I have got my eye on. Then go on a big holiday. Sell our existing house and save for the kids future

lunar1 · 25/09/2022 18:33

Pay off the mortgage and put solar panels on the roof. 50k each for a deposit for our children. Two big family holidays, one with DH's and one with my side of the family.

somebody2lava · 25/09/2022 18:33

Id pay off my house, is not overly expensive, around £60k. New roof on the extension £10k. Solar panels and battery £8k. Two new bathrooms £10k. Re plastere, new doors , banisters, redecorated and carpeted throughout £10k. New large porch £5k. New car £15k.

I'd also buy my sisters council house for around £45k her as her kid is disabled and she gave up a very promising career to care for them full time.

Id but some riverside land in Portugal and set up an off grid Quinta/log cabin and plant loads of fruit trees and veg. £70-100k .

I can dream

fernz · 25/09/2022 18:33

Moving house definitely. Currently have a very small mortgage but also low income and live in an area I don't like but not able to afford anywhere else I do like.

And I'd spend a bit of frivolous cash on clothes, no doubt!

Nidan2Sandan · 25/09/2022 18:37

Pay off mortgage which is around £330k. Pay off my car which is £15k and I know DH has a credit card which would be cleared.

After that a big holiday and we would buy DH a new car. Maybe a loft conversion.
