How many house spiders have you encountered?

I moved into a new build last year and was hugely smug that I didn’t have a single house spider last autumn. This year, I’ve had loads. In my daughter’s clothes (lying on her bedroom floor), I’ve just found one on my bed after throwing a 6 legged one out from the hallway. I estimated I’ve chucked out about 8 this month (humanely caught and taken away from the house and released!).

Why my house? Where have they come from? I’m not scared of them, they make me jump when they scuttle about… but the one on my bed I wasn’t keen on.

Please tell me this is normal?

They’re everywhere. Biggest I’ve ever seen on my bedroom wall a few nights ago. Had to send in my husband to catch and release as no way I could have done it.

GreekOlive · 25/09/2022 00:11

I live alone so it’s just me! I’m very nervy when I catch them. They’re fast and unpredictable 😆

They certainly are. I can’t stand the way they dance about. Horrible! Seriously proud of you for catching them. Hope spider season’s over soon, I’ve had enough!!!

hellosunshineagainxxx · 25/09/2022 00:27

Three in the past hour! Just so many this year

Phrenologistsfinger · 25/09/2022 00:28

Fewer than normal this year, which is worrying. There has been a noticeable decline in insect numbers here this year since the extreme heat/drought. It’s eerie.

TwowaystoUrmston · 25/09/2022 00:37

Only 1 so far Sad he's been hanging around for a few days now, I've called him Manuel. Never thought I'd be able to cohabit happily with spiders (used to be phobic) but I'm quite happy to leave him alone for as long as he manages to evade the cat Grin

FreezyFreezy · 25/09/2022 00:40

Count yourself lucky you're not in Australia www.ladbible.com/news/aussie-horrified-to-see-huge-spider-sitting-on-top-of-toilet-paper-20220923

StandingInTheMoment · 25/09/2022 00:44

Only about 3 so far. I put them in the garage, feel bad putting them outside. 🕷

SarahDippity · 25/09/2022 00:50

I just had one run up my lap blanket 😵‍💫. Squashed to oblivion on the floor. No regrets.

GoodbyeErinsborough · 25/09/2022 00:50

We haven't had that many. Maybe three or four.

They are ENORMOUS! I have never seen spiders as big as they have been.
We are in a new(ish) build too. Moved in 2017.

DevaleraSpawnOfSatan · 25/09/2022 00:59

We had one scuttle across the floor of the garden room the other evening, I swear to God he had clogs on he was that big. We caught him and deposited him out at the front gate, I may have shouted and don't come back. Grin So two days later out came the Indorex the house has now been sprayed and that should be that for several months.

We had one a few years ago, and Dh took him under a glass cover and let him go at the gate, it was raining and damp and DH legged it back to the front door, we turned around and there was another one, or was it, did it beat DH back to the front door, we will never know. Grin

DramaAlpaca · 25/09/2022 01:00

Dozens! There are at least three enormous ones living in DS's bathroom. They don't bother him, and I rarely go in there so they don't bother me.

DevaleraSpawnOfSatan · 25/09/2022 01:03

@DramaAlpaca

You are a mighty woman I wouldn't rest until they had been removed from the house.

AffIt · 25/09/2022 01:31

We've got three current very polite speeder housemates: Steffi, who lives in the bedroom; Agatha, who lives in the top corner of the living room; and Jemima, who stubbornly insists on living just outside the living room window (I've offered for her to come in, but she's not having it. Maybe she'll change her mind when it gets colder).

Speeders are great, I'd far rather have them as housemates than flies.

DontTrustThisPoster · 25/09/2022 01:35

3 so far in the past 4-6 weeks, not as huge as last year and not as many. But I did absolutely drench the windows and door frames in deathlac

FluffMagnet · 25/09/2022 01:42

So, so many, including two that have climbed on me in bed this year and one that ran at me in DD’s room, causing me to fall into the wardrobe in fright (somehow DD slept through the entire commotion). DH has refused to move the one in the hall this evening - he has no idea how close he skirted to divorce.

AnnieCannyFrangipani · 25/09/2022 03:26

Loads this year, and they're huge! I put 3 outside yesterday, and 2 were evicted today. They scare the life out of me but I live alone so I either catch them or live in fear of them jumping out when I least expect it.

JennyWI · 25/09/2022 04:00

um alot, I live in a cellar apartment so there everywhere. Ive given up and taken to naming them. If they survive the cats, and stay out of my face, they get to stay. Fred has made it a happy 3 months now trolling around in my bathroom. What do spiders eat? I think he deserves a treat/

CatSeany · 25/09/2022 04:03

My cat eats them, and I'm so so grateful because I'm phobic of them. I've not seen any live ones this year, but I've found a few stray spider legs that look like they would have been attached to very large specimens.

BonesOfWhatYouBelieve · 25/09/2022 04:22

Only one small one thankfully. Plus a few cellar spiders but despite being terrified of the big black one I actually don't mind these at all and so just leave them. I've heard they eat the other ones but I'm not sure how true that is - I still leave them just in case though!

gaymeanshappy · 25/09/2022 04:23

So so many! I like them though, I'd never harm one. If we killed all the spiders, just imagine the flies!

spiderontheceiling · 25/09/2022 04:25

We have dozens in the house at the moment. None of us are at all bothered by them so, unless they're somewhere like in a sink, we tend to leave them be but there are so many at the moment that I've decided today is going to be spider relocation day!

stillvicarinatutu · 25/09/2022 05:25

The big bruiser on my duvet while I was in it tonight made me squeal a bit but he got relocated to the shed

MayISuggestSomeThickCutSteakChipsToGoWithThat · 25/09/2022 05:36

Quite a few. I've had 4 on the bedroom ceiling all week and some more in the bathroom. They don't bother me in the slightest. Even DCAT is getting more and more lazy and hardly bothers trying to eat them anymore, although I did find a half decapitated daddy long legs the other day on my living room windowsill. Now flies on the other hand!!

Popvan · 25/09/2022 06:12

About 5 so far this week. I bought a plug in for the bedroom that is supposed to repel them, but one jumped out from behind the headboard when changing the sheet.
