How many house spiders have you encountered?

I moved into a new build last year and was hugely smug that I didn’t have a single house spider last autumn. This year, I’ve had loads. In my daughter’s clothes (lying on her bedroom floor), I’ve just found one on my bed after throwing a 6 legged one out from the hallway. I estimated I’ve chucked out about 8 this month (humanely caught and taken away from the house and released!).

Why my house? Where have they come from? I’m not scared of them, they make me jump when they scuttle about… but the one on my bed I wasn’t keen on.

Please tell me this is normal?

About 3, fewer than usual but it's a new house so not sure if it's unusual for here. I'm a bit relieved, mumsnet had me believing we'd get loads after moving to a more rural location. But as you've found, it can change year to year.

Samanabanana · 25/09/2022 06:45

Millions of cellar spiders and two giant house spiders so far. We very rarely get house spiders here (I can count on two hands how many I've spotted in the 6 years we've been here!) but we are always over run with cellar spiders.

DreamingofItaly2023 · 25/09/2022 06:47

More than I have ever encountered in previous years, I don’t harm them but can’t waitfor spider season to be over.

Mol1628 · 25/09/2022 07:12

So many. I keep finding huge ones in the bath therefore forcing me to deal with them.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 25/09/2022 07:30

Loads so far and they're MASSIVE 😣.
They're too big for the cat to tackle now so I'm having to deal with them myself.

IceStationZebra · 25/09/2022 07:37

About one a day for the last two weeks 😣 the cats used to be quite adept at catching and eating them, but as they get older and lazier, either don’t bother or just maim them instead, so I can’t even put them outside and have to finish the job.

Not a new build, 1930s semi with lots of ways for them to get in ventilation.

We have so many spiders I’ve given up. A couple live in permanent residence on the landing window. Sometimes it takes only a couple of hours for a web to be across our front door having been out earlier in the day. It’s such an in joke that I’m going as a one of my spiders to the halloween fancy dress. We live rurally and lots of nooks and crannies for them to make themselves at home in. The silver lining is they keep the moths and flies at bay.

HeyHeyer · 25/09/2022 07:43

Onltly one so far. Left it alone - I only relocate from the bath (and I rarely need to do that any more as I leave a towel / spider-ladder out whenever I remember).

I do have a few big cellar spiders that live here all the time so I dont know if that makes a difference.

LovelyDaaling · 25/09/2022 08:15

We have virtually none since we started spraying carpet moth killer around the edges of carpets once a year.

Airymanning · 25/09/2022 08:18

I've sprayed indorex and still getting them!

ShowOfHands · 25/09/2022 08:27

Zero.

But we have cellar spiders (2 in the bathroom, 3 in the garden room, couple in each hallway and 2 in the snug) and I presume they eat any house spiders. We have a deal: I hoover up the cellar spider webs once a week but leave them be; they keep web building to a minimum and deal with the house spider population. They don't go anywhere 98% of the time. I greet them as I enter their domain, they twirl wispily in their respective corners.

House spiders don't bother me tbh but we don't have any.

Ask me about the monsters in the log store instead. I had to take the logs out last week in order to fix the roof and they were everywhere. Huge and hairy. Kept finding them in my hair.

YorkieTheRabbit · 25/09/2022 09:25

We’ve had more this year than I can ever remember. Last year I think we had three in total.

TheDogsDinner · 25/09/2022 09:27

Four so far, bloody whoppers they were too. I'm terrified of spiders.
One of them conveniently put itself in an old measuring jug which was on the bathroom floor ( I use it to bath the dog ) which I was grateful for as I could just put something over the top to trap it until my husband could deal with it.
Then I shouted at Howard, the cellar spider who I nurture for failing in his task of killing them.
I've threatened him with eviction if he doesn't start earning his keep.

DrFoxtrot · 25/09/2022 10:28

I've not noticed many in the house, but the patio and side access to the house is like something out of Indiana Jones Shock I have to take a stick or broom to carry in front of me to clear huge webs before I get to the bins.

DrFoxtrot · 25/09/2022 10:31

We did have one indoors a few weeks ago in DD's bedroom. She came to me because she thought there was a mouse scratching in a box. I lifted the box and it was a huge spider underneath. We couldn't believe the noise it was making.

Ineedhelp1981 · 25/09/2022 10:42

I was thinking the same thing re: amount of spiders!
This summer, I have felt that my house has been a sanctuary for them! And they have been big as well!
I was watching a movie and one just decided to dance along my carpet. I couldn't believe how massive it was. I couldn't concentrate much after that lol

Hopefully, it's calm down now!

Anoisagusaris · 25/09/2022 10:46

Our house is full of them. Could find dozens now if I went looking.

notlikethat · 25/09/2022 10:53

I shouldn't have read this thread. Totally on me though! I was hoping everyone would say one or none. For me just the one massive spider in the bathroom sink. I barricaded up the door and left it for DH to sort. I'm nervously checking the room as we speak. Seems okay, although I scan a room on entering like an FBI agent at this time of year. Going to check the house now!

JudyGemstone · 25/09/2022 11:03

I have a Victorian terrace in a city, generally only get 1 or 2 a year. There’s one living in the kitchen at the moment, she/he’s been put outside at least once but comes back in again so I’ve let her/him stay.

have to take its chances with the cat though!

Fewer than normal this year, which is worrying. There has been a noticeable decline in insect numbers here this year since the extreme heat/drought. It’s eerie.

I think they’ve all come to my house! I’ve had loads, and a lot of them noticeably bigger than usual. Happened to glance down the other day only to see a huge one on my jeans. I let out the most blood-curdling scream! I’m usually ok, but think it was the shock.
